    The small disc was the Achilles heel for the GameCube’s third party support. Even though Capcom, Activision, Ubisoft, EA, Sega supported big games on the GameCube. I wish it had GTA III, MGS 2, Kingdom Hearts, which could’ve been able to divide the game on two discs! Hideo Kojima wanted the GC port, but Konami wasn’t able to publish it due to additional costs. KH was actually demanded by Nintendo for the GC when Chain of Memories was in development, they planned a multiplayer mode, that ended up in Chain of Memories!

      @@mechamaniaNot to mention that it was extremely lazy. Nintendo just had to use the mini disc standard that cuts the capacity in 1/4 when they could have easily made the DVD just a bit smaller (or even larger) than the standard one. Then they wouldn't have had their storage capacity gimped, and it would actually require specialised equipment to burn DVDs of those sizes.
      Also, it's funny that they did actually develop a new disc standard for the Wii U, which was quite nice. The edge of the disc was rather smooth, and it could hold ~25GB. The problem with that console was not disc capacity, however.

    A lot of people consider the GameCube version of Sonic Adventure to be bad, and sure, the Dreamcast version looks better in many ways, but I loved the DX version so much on Gamecube. Not only was it my first Sonic game (and I absolutely loved it, even the Big levels), but I was blown away by the fact that you could unlock full versions of classic Sonic games by getting the in-game emblems. Talk about awesome rewards. That was the best introduction I could've possibly asked for to the Sonic franchise as a kid.

    • @The_Boctor
      @The_Boctor Před 5 měsíci +3

      Speaking only in terms of the GameCube, it's a better (and slightly later) port than SA2B, too, which doesn't take advantage of the extra face buttons and keeps annoying context-sensitive actions (e.g. roll, pull lever) all on one button. SADX also bothers having the C-stick do anything at all, where SA2B just treats L and R the same way as the Dreamcast shoulder buttons, for lateral-only camera adjustment.

    • @littleguystar

      @Tirgo69 Před 5 měsíci

      I will say though, at the time, DX including the Game Gear Sonic games added a lot to its value, helped justify a purchase, and incentivizes the player to keep getting emblems better than any other version of the game. Which is why it was pathetic when even this was taken out of future DX rereleases, so all you were left with was a horrible version of a Sonic game that was already mixed at best. I still bought it for PS3 and 360. Individually

    the Gamecube was Nintendo's last gaming console that wasn't a gimmick.

    • @leonro
      @leonro Před 5 měsíci

      The mini discs were a gimmick, so were the handle, the console's shape, and the controller layout. Wireless controllers too. It was a much more gimmicky console than PS2, which only had analogue buttons as a gimmick, and Xbox, which emphasised its online functionality. Nintendo was far more open to throwing out ideas to see what stuck.
      Not to mention the N64, with its controller, the cartridge loader + disc add-on strategy, and 4 player local multiplayer. The NES had a ton of accessories (some included in the box even), and the SNES, perhaps the tamest of the bunch, had shoulder buttons and special chips added to the cartridges to enhance the games (notably superFX for StarFox, Doom, and Yoshi's Island).

    I was never able to get into Billy Hatcher. Was older and it just felt slow paced. Great color and look to it but really slow and tedious.
    Maybe I didn't play it enough. Never had Sonic Gems bet that was decent. And I had the dream cast so I didn't see a need to re-get adventure.
    I always hear people say how great Billy Hatcher was and wonder if they just didn't have a lot of games to play or a friend with the GTA stuff from that era. When you're getting PS and Xbox access does it change how certain GameCube games feel.
    But I also didn't really love Mario Sunshine replayed in the 3D collection and it was OK nothing crazy but playing right after 64 it definitely felt like a mild evolution forward.

    Were the smaller discs really an issue though? I feel like a lot of PS2 games, even though they were on DVD, didnt really utilize the entire disc. And when they did, it was mostly fluffed up with DVD quality video. I think a lot more games could have easily been ported to the Game Cube without any cuts to the game itself, it just would have taken effort that the publishers likely didnt want to spend money on, given the limited returns on Game Cube releases.

      Standard PS2 DVDs were over three times the size of a GameCube disk. If they used even a third of the disk it was too big for GameCube. GameCube had smaller disc size, Wii was just motion control, WiiU just didn’t get support, Switch is underpowered and most multi platform games run worse on it. You can argue with me all you want about the Switch being portable and still running great games but when they have a game running like The Witcher 3, it’s at the lowest possible settings and makes it not even worth playing on there. I wonder if the next console would be as strong as a base PS4 so Nintendo can say they run games in 1080p HDR maybe 30fps. Also I have the Switch and am playing through Super Mario RPG, the menus even stutter. I don’t understand how they can’t fix that.

PS2 and Xbox came out a year or 2 later and we have the same storage ability and now your GameCube disc is to small to hold a full size game for the era. On one hand it made 3rd party games a pain to port on the other it kept games from being insanely long to beat.
