- A Pioneer SX-1050 stereo receiver repair and restoration video. Old electrolytic capacitors and heat stressed/troublesome transistors were replaced. The power supply assembly in the Pioneer SX-1050 receiver was completely rebuilt. The EQ amplifier, flat amplifier, tone control, and filter assemblies were rebuilt. In addition, the two filter capacitors were replaced. This Pioneer SX-1050 was then bench tested with an audio analyzer. This was a top to bottom repair and restoration that after 40 years of service this vintage receiver needed.

Dean Hintz : Many years ago,I had a chance to buy an sx-1050 on ebay that went for $300.
It was one that was still in the original box and packing that had been left at the parents of a service member for many years and I don't think it had even been hooked up.
I remember the Pioneer SX- 1050 as a receiver I practically lusted for back in the day. I believe it was one of the original Super Power receivers.
Yes, it was. With my Pizza Hut wages in the 70's the stereo sales people would just move me along to the $300 receivers.
I love your silver receivers. I caught the Hi Fi bug in 1975 when I was in the Navy. My first system was a Sony TA-1150 integrated amp, an AR turntable and two BIC Venturi speakers. I said good bye to them long ago but I kinda miss them.
I found one of these a few years back in its original box at a garage sale while I was walking my dog in the neighborhood. They were asking $50, I offered $30. Works beautifully. After looking at eBay prices, I will never let it go! The seller didn't know what they had.

Have a Realistic 1000/2000(?) series receiver that looks in great condition, powers up fine but doesn't produce sound. Been sitting on my shelf for 4-5 years. I need to refurbish it for sure.

when my dad was home 😆 Still loving my G8000 If you see my channel you see i have alot of new gear and i have put many new preamps on the G-8000 and dam the details come out but you lose that warmth and richness of Vintage but gain clear crisp clarity its fun to mismatch to find that goid synergy

It looks like the knobs could use a polishing to make them pop.
I kid you not, I bought a 1050 from a vintage shop about ten years ago with one channel out. I paid 15 bucks for it. I had it fixed and it ran for years but a channel has gone out again. I wish I could find someone in Utah to do a restoration comparable to this video on it for me.
Side Note: I also have a Yamaha M-60 Amp with C-80 preamp. Paid about $150 for the pair. C-80 needs some work though. This vintage stereo has its pros and cons.

Glad it was helpful! I don't keep any parts lists. I work on so many pieces of equipment so I have most all the capacitors, transistors, diodes, etc. in stock. It's much easier for me that way. Thanks for watching.
Back then when receiver build quality looks good and tough. Just only need some extra attachment like a bluetooth adapt to make it quite modern

Vintage audio values have gone up a lot the last few years in the USA. Not to many deals left unless you are lucky enough to find something at an estate sale or flea market.
Great job as always. What do you think a SX 950 lets say from the original owner in very good to mint condition run in todays market?
Thank you very much for your kind words. The SX-950 is a fine receiver. Like all 40-45 year old equipment expect it to need some work even if it is cosmetically perfect.

My receiver!!! Bought mine at the Camp Buckner BX audio store, Okinawa 1977. I have an issue - Left or Right channel will drop out, lose sound, volume brings it back - I turn the balance to the channel that has dropped and crank the volume and the sound comes back sounding like it broke through something. The guy around here who worked on it before has retired and I am looking at a trip to Indianapolis or Chicago to get it repaired. Any experience with an issue like this? Any idea of cost and experience level needed to repair? I am enjoying this video very much!

The X50 series were famous for failing when they were even only a few years old. Pioneer did a lot of cost cutting in this series. The voltage regulators, for example in the SX-750, were so under heatsinked and ran so hot they would destroy their own solder connections. Like you pointed out they were running many components right at their limit. This series of receivers were popular but are arguably among the least reliable of the era.
You think these were made cheap, but everything after was worse. The competition was still underway and cost cutting was just beginning. This was also a great looking line and was almost entirely discrete, so you can still rebuild them as was done here. Another point, a good deal of these are still operational 45 years later, how's that for reliable? And you can't beat the balanced tuning knob, something that was wonderful to use.

I have a sx1050 that I purchased new in 1977. It has been stored in an a/c closet in my home most of this time. I had a intermittent popping in and out of one side for years. I recently sent it to Texas (from) Alabama, to have it “restored” and repaired. (Caps replaced, etc). It didn’t need restoring as it looks as new as the day I purchased it. 4 weeks and $575 later it was returned. It ran perfect for about two hours than same old popping in and out. The guy in Texas won’t reply. Sometimes I can play with the other controls and it will pop back. Can you fix this issue, or would you like to purchase it?
I have the exact model but recently when I turn it on there is no "click" hence no sound. Protection circuit? Where is that bad boy located? Thanks.
My issue was the 32 volt zener diode on the protection board. With your's, really no telling until you have it looked at. The protection board, power amp assembly, or the power supply would be the first places to look at.

So I know nothing about this stuff -- being honest -- but I did have a SX-1050 when I was a teenager in the 70's. Somehow I got to this and other videos showing the old beast -- to be honest, I was not looking for it, nor was it on my mind. But now that I see it, I have such a warm feeling as probably many my age do who owned one. Question; how are they after they are restored? Is the output decent compared to say any strereo receiver in the 2000's for music? I'm not comparing it to a Krell or other high end, ... You get the idea? If I connected this to an iPod through a DAC, would it be decent? For me, to be honest, its the nostalgia of it all... I have such amazing feelings and memories with my SX. Quick thoughts?

I inherited my father's prized SX-850 which is in mint condition. I believe the protection circuit is the only problem as the speakers cutoff when I engage the "loudness" switch. I am NOT one to try this kind of repair. I want to keep my father's unit and pass it down to one of my children. Could you please suggest someone who can properly repair and perhaps upgrade my father's old unit for me?
