For the price of €500 in Europe, I would have expected a removable lining so that the anarok can easily be adjusted to the weather. Fjallraven has done this with another model of anarok.
I’ve used this jacket for around 3-4 years now. Can be used year round, but really shines in winter! The hood protects from any spindrift. Pair it with a buffalo mountain shirt in wet/cold conditions.
Yes, so much protection from the elements! The Buffalo Mountain Shirt looks neat, thanks for the suggestion. It looks like it has a great collar and also has a big kangaroo pocket in the front. Love those!
I bought this anorak a few years ago. It's really good in every way, very practical. But there are three points to bear in mind, in my opinion:
- it's a heavy windbreaker and, as a windbreaker, it's effective. But it's not warm, because it has no insulation. So you need (as mentioned in the video) a warm jacket, down jacket or something similar to wear underneath.
- it's relatively waterproof, even if you use a lot of special wax. It can withstand snowfall, even slush, but not real rain. You need to know that. And so, a perfect anorak for winter and mid-season.
- the G-1000 is basically a canvas and, as such, it wears out where there are creases, at the sleeve ends, for example, which will quickly get little holes from rubbing.
Otherwise, it's a great anorak.

Love this jacket and would love to own it. However, I cannot justify the price tag especially when the jacket's use is limited to dry days as not waterproof.

Nikwax for cotton will work to water proof the Anorak
I got the jacket for a reasonable price as it was second hand, and absolutely agree with you. the jacket is fine for a light rain use, but in severe conditions the garment is just not enough. I'd never spend all that money , although the design is really good. My old Barbour is better under heavy rain.
I use wax on mine and it resists rain really well.
No problem. I bought one, and then I turn around since I knew it was not going to be 100% waterproof, I turned around after I ordered it and I ordered two cans of “Filson Wax.”

And, you can take my word for what I say next, Or you can go down the same road I did and try 2 to 4 different cans of wax. And then try Filson last. So it’s your choice.

The last time I was in one was over 30 years ago. And as my absolutely beautiful, tall, 5 foot 11 inch, Buxom, 42-D-Cup, 55,year old wife of 32 years says, “ChinaMart is so far beneath my husband and me, that it’s all the way on the other-side-of-the-Earth!! So buy the “ANORAK NO. 8 M”, then a 2 or 3 inch decent paintbrush 🖌 and heat the wax, and be GENEROUS With the wax when you wax it on. Heat it up 1st.
If we live close to one another I would do it for you because I really enjoy waxing jackets 🧥/ coats 🧥. I own 7 different Filson coats / jackets. And I own several different FILSON bags. Last but not least, read some of the reviews on this bag. I want it for 25 years and it’s also been with me on God only knows how many domestic & international flights ✈️ on so many Northern Canada Float Plane flights for hunting ‘ fishing trips. To Africa , to various locales throughout Europe. Still made in Seattle. The only thing they added to this bag in the last 40 years was a place to add laptops!! Ha!
British CS95 Smock...same 65/35 water resistant/wind proof poly/cotton blend fabric, same oversized, wire brimmed hood, same waist adjustments, more pockets with a better layout, full length zipper = increased versatility...1/8th the price of this anorak.
Agreed, those British smocks are great, I have two. Military surplus clothing in general can be an outstanding value if you’re willing to wear camouflage or “military” colors. American, British, Austrian and German surplus is all high quality stuff for cheap.

Waiting for mine in the mail. Might send it right back and exchange for a Keb Eco Shell Jacket. I need waterproof and wind proof, but am worried about the breathability of the Keb, someone talk me out of exchanging the Anorak 8:p. My hunting weather conditions are about 5 - 10 kms of hiking, exposed riding in heavy snow fall or slight rain, but more than half the time I am in and out of a truck moving area to area 2400 Square kms within a couple months. Would a Eco Shell Keb be a sauna in a truck?

How tall is Alex? I ordered the medium based in the web site recommendation then freaked out it was going to be too big I’m only 5’7” 160# and it fits great with a puffy underneath. Alex in a small looks bigger than me in my medium

It's just a shell, but it stops the wind great. I just love mine.
It looks amazing, the design and everything. But I do not understand well what is the function of this. It is not for the rain, it does not have insulation either, you have to add other layers because by itself it does not shelter much.
I've had this jacket for a few years now. It's my favourite garment for winter activities. The point is that it is windproof and breathable. A waterproof jacket (i.e. Gore Tex) will keep the rain out, but also trap the sweat from your body which makes you cold.
The way you use this jacket is by layering: when active, have thin clothes underneath, ensuring you don't overheat. When resting: add a wool or down layer underneath the jacket to stay warm. This is not a rain jacket - it's a wind stopper, and (in my opinion) comes to it's own below freezing. The anorak design allows for good ventilation when moving, which is key to keeping you dry.
There are several jackets on the market that are lighter, more windproof and cheaper than this jacket, but if you are in to the nostalgic look and enjoy good craftmanship this jacket checks those boxes. I live in Norway, and I've tested this jacket in every temperature from 0 to -20, and I've never been disappointed.

Been wanting this for a looooong time. Finally ordered it last week, still waiting on it to arrive. After watching this video I’m kinda worried about my choice of size. I chose the medium (before seeing this video). I’m 5”7 @ 164lbs. Really hope I don’t have to return it 🙁

@@GetUpTheMountains so I got it a few days after this post so I actually had a little time to try it out.
It’s winter in Maryland (US) and I’ve worn in every day in temps ranging from 40 - 12 degrees F (snow and lite rain).
The medium size IS a little big but not overly large. I’d say it’s perfect for layering but not too big to where it feels like I’m “swimming” in it. If you don’t plan on layering with it at all, I’d def size down but IMHO I think you should stick with your normal sizing.
I love this Anorak and find it’s extremely versatile and useful in many situations. I WILL say that the cuffs could use a third snap though. You’d have to have MASSIVE bicep size wrists (exaggerating a bit) in order for them to be tighter but I feel as though this is a minor inconvenience and can be remedied by again, adding a third snap.
It IS expensive, but I gotta admit that the quality, design, aesthetics and, versatility is well worth it 👌🏽💯
@@GetUpTheMountains in the colder temps, I wear a merino wool base layer, down jacket (ghost whisper), and this Anorak…using the Anorak as a “soft shell” and I’m pretty toasty.

The color grading of this video is making my eyes bleed all over my Fjallraven jacket. Thankfully it's waxed, so it's just beading off.
I bought a n°8 anorak three weeks ago and it's a very nice anorak beautifully made. But it is, NOT water resistant, at all when you receive it.
For the price the bloody thing costs Fjallraven could at least give it a first coat of wax on it. I'm not happy with that at all.
All the G-1000 should come with a coat of wax from the factory, albeit a light coat. If you're wanting increased water repellency, pick up some Greenland Wax and apply it to the anorak. It's pretty simple and will get you some better protection. Fjallraven has to cater to a wide range of customers, and a lot of those customers don't need/want super heavily waxed products, which is why they aren't loaded down with wax when you buy them. You can always add more though!

Fjallraven used to be great and be made in really good quality. Now it’s made in China. I won’t touch it.
The collar and hood are not good.

@@BeaverSportsAK I don't like a zip-through collar that comes all the way to the mouth through the collar. The collar should be separate from the zipper. The collar should flip up when needed and snap in front and be able to be folded down when not needed.
Ideally, there should be a zip-off hood that has a storm flap that covers the face including the nose.
Do you see at 5:47 how the collar hits him in the face, but the jacket isn't even zipped to neck? That is not good,
All the collars and hoods are poorly designed now because of that extra material between the base of the neck and chin.

@@canyonoverlook9937 horses for courses I personally hate zip off hoods! I don't find them any good in a storm, and they all seem to close with either velcro or snaps which are useless in the snow.
@@allwaysinquire6212 It not so much about the zip-off. I really want a hood that blocks the face and covers the nose so when I have a stiff breeze in my face it blocks the wind. I don't want to wear a buff or scarf when it is 35 or 40 degrees, but very windy. I don't like buffs or scarves that much.
Helikon-tex makes this one in the form of the woodsman anorak. It has all the features but with bigger side zippers, more organizing in the front pocket and without the annoying front button flap that you never use. Both have the same tightly woven polycotton mix that you can wax to improve water resistance. Both have all zippers in YKK. Helikon-tex has more stretch in the back material to improve movement and since the back doesnt get hammered all the time. The No. 8 costs 470 euro and the woodsman costs 94 euro. Fjallraven will make you believe g1000 is not the same material. If you understand materials you will know it is EXACTLY the same material. They will claim its because its tightly woven. All of the polycotton in army clothes are tightly woven. They will say : but you can wax them. All the polycotton in army clothes can be waxed. So please do not get ripped off. Unless you wanna pay 5x for just a cheap leather stamp on the jacket and some strips of leather on the zips you can make yourself for 5 euro.

I got jackets from both also. It's both polycotton... Fjallraven looks better and might have better finish. But polycotton is polycotton... I use the vidda pro jacket a lot but for example a varusteleka smock has the same heft in its polycotton than a g1000 heavy duty and about twice as thick as normal g1000 on my vidda pro. You might believe they have a magical polycotton but they don't. Its just an old material that has been used in military for ages and its a nice balance between dry time, durability, fire resistance and breathability. But Fjallraven doesn't have a magic recipe for it... If you believe they do then research your materials.
