in East Europe this drink of baking soda is/was frequently used for "the day after drinking" symptom for ages ;-)
I soda load, it works for me. Even if I don’t have a performance gain, I feel it reduces after race muscle fatigue. I use it up to 5 miles races. I know it’s not supposed to work for that long an effort, but I notice the post race benefit. It for 10km or more though. With my weight I get my dose in 3 antacid tablets, one 3 hrs before, one 2 hrs before, one 1 hour before the race.
I had a 10 mile interval run this morning that included (10) X .5 mile threshold efforts, so thought I’d give the baking soda a go. I actually think it did help. Appreciate the video
have you tried adding creatine to your drink bottle before a high intensity workout? I have found through experimentation over the past 2 months that adding a small scoop to my water bottle allows me to sustain a longer effort for any zone 4 or 5 workouts. I personally don't know if this is just a placebo effect or not but it still allows me to push a little harder for longer.
I don't understand what good it would do to drink sodium bicarbonate. Anyone who has made a model volcano knows what happens when you mix it with an acid, and our stomachs have acid in them. Mix sodium bicarbonate with hydrochloric acid and you'll get salt water and large amounts of CO2:
NaHCO3 + HCl → NaCl + H2O + CO2(g)
If there's any benefit to it I assume it's purely placebo.
Totally agree that taken orally can present some challenges. The body of literature is 40 years deep showing between 2-8% improvement in performance. The challenge has always been the GI distress that comes with it.
correct, then you burp and feel lighter
Isn't that co2 very good though for increasing oxygen in the cells?
Great topic 👍
This had me inspired
I’ve used this as well as Lactigo. They both seemed to help. Placebo? Maybe but if it helps it helps.
2:30 re the discussion about "buffering", and the production of sodium bicarb in the kidneys. A question is asked regarding types of food which can help with this natural process (of keeping the blood supply slightly alkaline) and an example of dark green leafy veg is used as an example.
A little research shows that pretty much all fruit, veg, nuts, grains and seeds become alkaline when digested (even citrus fruits like oranges and lemons which have citric acid actually become alkaline when digested) whilst foods such as meat, cheese, milk, eggs, coffee, soft drinks etc actually become acidic when digested.
This could well be the reason why people who eat a plant based diet or who are vegan (there is a difference) are able to last longer and recover faster. Take Scott Jurek as an example with just under 267km in 24 hours and multiple Spartathlon wins (246km or a little under 6 marathons).
I wonder why the diet isn't more popular. There seems to be a real lack of successful athletes is main stream sports on plant based diets. There must be more to this than just acid and alkali. The scientific consensus on alkali diets is that they are detrimental to health as the body needs to fight to balance out the ph level. I know the veg based minerals are less biodiverse so maybe the gains are cancelled out by the loses. Diets, what a complex thing.
@@MrJhockley going from experience, when i first became vegan quite a few years ago I had so many people ridicule me, try to sneak meat and dairy in to my food, ask me about protein, call me weak etc but with so much publicity and proof regarding the health benefits of a plant based diet in the media nowadays the comments and assumptions towards me have mostly changed and stopped.
I used to relish being able to out run and out cycle my work colleagues in their 20s even last year (i'm late 40s) and have a very fast recovery time (can race a marathon and be recovered enough to run another the following day). it is however possible to adhere to a plant based diet but still be nutritionally deficient which is why some people just give up trying.
Just for a little extra insight I search for a small group of world class vegan athletes that people will probably know ....
james wilks , mma fighter
Pro cyclist Dotsie Bausch
lewis hamilton, formula 1
scott jurek, ultrarunner
Fiona Oakes, world record marathon runner
rich roll, Ironman athlete
Olympic weightlifter Kendrick Farris
Morgan Mitchell, olympic sprinter
DeAndre Jordan, NBA & olympics
Carl Lewis, olympic sprinter
nate diaz , mma
mike tyson,
arnie is almost vegan but still eats eggs
can't recall the tennis player but i think she and her sister are twins
Brendan Brazier, ironman and ultrarunner
@@bikeanddogtrips I'm sorry you went through that ridicule. Diets are miss-understood by so many and often become to target of ridicule. I know there is a lot of misinformation on the internet regarding meat and anti-meat. The scientific consensus is still leans away from the restrictive nature of plant based diets but that will change as substitutes and supplements get better. I know most successful vegan athletes built a career on omnivorous diets but then changed after their peak such as Mike Tyson and Carl lewis. Some during their peak such as Lewis Hamilton and some just tried it for a while such as Serena Williams. We need to dissect these facts before jumping to simple conclusions. Over consumption of meat is a real accepted problem amongst health officials. I see positive steps being made towards animal welfare and i truly believe that the world will one day become cruelty free.
@@MrJhockley i hope so too. i became vegan in order to do my best to eliminate animal cruelty or at the very least not contribute to it. having great health and never being ill is just a nice side benefit.
Ask James Cracknell about what happens when you take too much and do a flat out 2k on the rowing machine wearing nothing but very thin lycra.
I feel the best pre workout for me is : 1/2 teaspoon of sodium bicap, ecaas, 50mg caffeine, l-theanine.
Cant you compare against S Caps to see if the reaction to sodium bicarbonate is the sodium or not? I have used S Caps to help with cramp in ultras and ironman events and it helped me keep going where other races i would have cramped. If that is similar to the buffering then i will stick with them, they come in capsules so easy to take during racing.
Fantastic.. Nigel it's fantastic and his recipes for cycling are THE best..
Thank you, nice presentation, will give baking soda a try today on my 10K time trial. I have read that Sodium bicarbonate should not be taken sparingly and too often as it reduces the acidity in our stomach creating alkalinity. We need acidity for the digestion process and the destruction of pathogens. it can potentially cause gastric reflux since our gastric valves open up. A good alternative is to take Beta-Alanine - it has the same effect and is fast-acting.
Baking soda works, Lance Armstrong would know, that's why he never had to use any other enhancment products. For those of you who don't know, Lance is the main panderer of this stuff.
I have used both. Amp is expensive so if your stomach can take it good old powdered baking soda will do the job. Def not a new thing. I remember this as far back as I remember. I’m 50. Only use it on my hard workouts or races.
Thanks for the support OFFSHOREDOUG.
How about creatine for training?
Does baking soda help with low stomach acid or in fat absorption?
Big fan of Amp Human!
Thanks for the support Trevor!
I’m slapping my Amp Human on before I tackle the Ventum Bike Course on Rouvy tomorrow. Just waiting for the 180km course to download on my PC. Maybe I should rub some Amp on it to speed the bloody thing up, I need to go to bed!
I’ve watched similar videos in the past. I thought this was great 👍
Perhaps:
Have not too high a dose on an empty stomach before breakfast.
Have a slightly lower dose if to be done daily.
If having a higher dose then have more water with it, or another glass of only water immediately after; allow a longer time to drink it.
Wait for at least ten minutes before eating.
Allow time for the gas it produces to come out.
Allow for the additional time to go to the toilet - as it does clean out your bowels.
Do not have with a meal or if you have food in your stomach; as the alkali neutralises stomach acid and affects digestion.
It can also make you more likely to be sick - if taken with a meal or just after - as the higher stomach pH means less pathogens are killed.
Isn’t baking soda the main ingredient in sherbet? Looks like I’ll be raiding the kids sweets before my next threshold run 🤣
The question is : Is the lactate acid a cause or is it a consequence of tired body?
I feel like it works, but I’m afraid to lower the stomach acid too low
Gtn has gotta pay the bills...
Baking soda gives me the best workouts, I take 1/8 or 1/4 at times, I don't get tired. It's made my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu way better as well, I'm the last guy on the mats and I just want to keep going while everyone else is tired. I try to lay off from it for a few days as well too much is not good for you, it can have a negative side affects as well, to much of it.
Unfortunately, a study in 2020 concluded that this exact sodium bicarbonate lotion was ineffective in altering blood buffering capacity or enhancing performance in either trained or untrained individuals.
I'm fine with On shoes being promoted but I'm a bit uneasy about this.
We welcome the feedback. However, Bicarbonate is used regularly by athletes, so we wanted to explain why and how it works. It’s an interesting topic. I’m certainly not forcing anyone to take it though. This is merely an educational piece, and we teamed up with AMP to do it
@@markthrelfall3577 promoting Lance Armstrong backed ergogenic aids is morally questionable to say the least!
Well, Sodium Bicarbonate is a big help to me to stop coffee drinking. Now I feel its effectivity like giving you a fuel to burn.
Ugh! Sounds like the drawbacks of drinking bicarbonate far outweigh the (potential) benefits!
But this sounds like anecdotal rather than empirical evidence. Are the results presented here anecdotal or empirical?
Interested Subject, I did try it sometime ago, but I don't seem to understand the logic of the claims. Fugured its a placebo effect, apart from affecting the stomach ph, which probably affecting ability to break down food, slower digestion, slower releases of carbs could possibly fuel the effort longer. Any change to the blood ph could have major affect on your health 😬
MIKE DOES SCIENCE 🤣🤓
Ok, sorry guys i really enjoyed your channel but that's BS. Baking soda is only beneficial at really short distances (max 5k) where one is really in the anaerobic zone. But you'll earn more negative effects by drinking it on a regular basis. It's bad for the teeth because it's abrasive to dental enamel, it leads you to take in way too much sodium which can lead to high blood pressure or other physiological problems (you won't eat a tablespoon of salt either i think) and it may cause digestive issues as well...well just to name a few... It's more of a placebo for anything longer than 5k at full effort. It cannot have any effects if you do train or compete at an aerobic area and only for a short period in anaerobic zones, though anaerobic glycolysis is a veeery ineffective way of producing energy.... And also there's no lactic acid produced in any way... Please at least google for scientific sources before publishing.... Nobody has to be a physiologist or chemist to understand what's written there...
Edit: and Lance Armstrong is not the best source for legal enhancement products...
Topically applied seams improbable. I’ll add that one to the BS pile.
Love me some solid anectodal science ... 🙃
I want the cake!
It's good to chase/rinse after anything nasty with either fresh plain water or juice. Why taste it for minutes afterword? Just rinse with water/juice after and swallow, simple, minimum lingering of taste

The taste can't be worse than other drinks I've been told were worth my time over the years..
I use ca, 20 . 25 Gramm in my Postworkout Shake with enough Powders..taste is no more problem..but i dont do triathlon...its just for my Workout and everyday work which can make a difference which i cant compare with a triathlon Training of course.
Quite ordinary household medicine in Serbia for digestive problems. Doctors don't recommend it, because it can foster the wrong kind of bacteria development in the gut. Long term use can cause serious damage. Very wrong to recommend it.
Links to studies showing the gut bacteria?
@@TebTengri nope, sorry, just basic chemistry and advice I got from an experienced surgeon. It's logically sound - it bonds with stomach acids and temporarily neutralizes them, alleviates heartburn, but acids don't kill injested bacteria - which in turn cause ulcers...
@@minem23 Certainly I'd agree that constant, multiple times a day ingestion would probably cause issues. I don't think taking it once a day without a large meal would cause much issue.
The body could easily re-acidify the stomach the 2+ hours later after exercise when a meal is eaten.
Logically sound doesn't always work out with the body either. There's a reason in vitro and in vivo are both conducted. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I'd need to see studies saying once daily boluses causes major issues
9:10 looks like he is drinking a full glass of apple cider vinegar xD
Personally i like the taste of baking soda
Either this fella from amp human is not a great social talker or is just unsure with all the hesitation when he's replying. Leave me to wonder on the effectiveness of what they're producing.
Agree with that. I felt 0 confidence or clarity from his talk
welcome to the...kitchen....bake a cake. Ok Mark, I think I got the gist. Which cake do u recommend eating while on the bike? Cheesecake? :)
Baking soda pink Himalayan sea salt and Cayenne pepper and warm water. Bam
going to be a weirdly perverted ironman transition as the swimmers leave the water and start asking each other to help them with their lotion.
Application is before the race. LOL
@@patrickdixon8669 wouldnt it get washed off in the water though?
@@bikeanddogtrips After 20-30 minutes most of the bicarb has been absorbed. It doesn't have to sit on the skin after that.
It will give you the shits
0.2 grams per kg of body weight 😒 so if you weigh 80 kg...16g of bicarbonate in one go! 😵
You can spread it out before the race between 3 hrs to go and 1 hr to go. But I’m glad I weigh 63!
@@jonathanzappala I worry about the amount of salt this adds as I am 80kg. The amount of bicarbonate for my ratio contains about 4 grams of salt! 😕
@@daiweston7846 I’ve heard that concern for people with high blood pressure. At least the does for your body is relative anyway.
Is no one going to say anything about all the booze bottles in Marks pantry?
Maybe you should've talked to a chemist; who would've told you that Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) + stomach acid (HCl) reacts to => CO2 (gas, explains the bloating) + Na+ Cl- (table salt) + H2O (water). So...yeah drinking salt water would do the exact same thing.... absolutely nothing for your workout. This BS is the same as claiming cow urine has some miracle effects.
Load of rubbish. Stick to natural foods etc. This chap doesn't convince me!
...what is used for baking cake is Baking Powder totally different then Baking Soda. When making a video you need to know your shit!
