A recorder is a flute. Just because it's called recorder it doesn't make it less of a flute. It's technically a flute, it takes part in pieces which have "flute" in their name in a significant way (e.g. The Handel Flute Sonatas) and in most European countries it's called some kind of flute, since it was invented.
In German it's Blockflöte, in Dutch it's dwarsfluit, in French it's flute a bec, in Spanish it's flauta dulce.

Technically, a recorder IS a flute. It's an internal duct flute.
Conor Vincent There are very big differences in both sound and appearance, actually. They’re “related,” apparently, but fundamentally they are pretty different. Some of the main differences are that: flutes are held sideways while recorders are more streamline from your mouth-out; flutes you blow through a relatively small hole in order to obtain sound (not touching the flute with your mouth) while recorders’ “mouthpiece” is shaped more like a whistle (you place your mouth directly onto it). Recorders are also often made of wood while flutes are metal. Recorders are also much easier to create sound with compared to flutes, and they also can potentially be more abrasive-sounding. Don’t know why you were so dramatic about it though.
