  • This is the residence of architect Kaori Arai (AtelierBio). She has been thinking about the energy used in daily life since the East Japan Earthquake, and aiming for self-sufficiency in electricity in the city, she designed this house where people can live comfortably and pleasantly even with little energy use. In winter, sunlight is directed through the windows and used for heating. Conversely, in summer, one air conditioner cools the entire house by blocking solar radiation. Solar panels on the roof generate their own electricity, which is used for self-consumption, and the surplus is stored in lead storage batteries or sold to the grid. Solar water heaters and rainwater tanks are also installed. The house maximizes the use of nature's blessings in daily life. Energy-saving and low running costs create a comfortable environment with even room temperatures. Another major advantage is that every corner of the house, including windows, corridors, and lofts, is comfortable and space can be used effectively. This makes it possible for a family of four to live together in a 117m2 space, including the loft, and for the design office space to coexist. The lifestyle of dealing with the sun according to the seasons awakens a "sensitivity to nature," which is often forgotten in city living.
