  • This was a beautiful day hike in Gods Beautiful Creation. Starting out early on this hike is always best because it can get hot in the afternoon. This was a little over 12 miles.

    I’m always wondering how wet your feet must be. That, or you have the best waterproof boots in the world. All that early morning grass is soaking. Thanks for making these and allowing me to escape back to Yellowstone!

    Hi Stan, my 1960 USGS layer shows a little different routing than the more recent USGS map like what you displayed at the beginning of this video. The difference in routing happens to be close to where you turned around, and you thought that area looked strange compared to your map. If you have Gaia premium you can see both layers. Just letting you know, Josh

    That is a beautiful area, and I was fortunate not to get lost, several times in the area. I have heard stories of hikers wondering while working for Xanterra. Thanks, Stan!

    Just love the landscape. do you think the fires through this area were from 1988?

    • @StanMills
      @StanMills  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Yes, and some of it was from a fire about 5 years ago. Here is a video that will show fire burn from about 5 years ago: czcams.com/video/HlukFSY8DCk/video.htmlsi=HZm00OZ3KM5vRCth

    Beautiful views. As there were lots of burned trees still showing, how long ago was the fire? Noticed lots of little evergreens growing.
    Are a lot of the trails not marked well?

    Cougar Cabin Trail is one of the rare YNP trails not shown on AllTrails app (while the Gneiss Creek Trail is). Based on your video, it doesn't look like there's much of a trail to follow.

    • @StanMills
      @StanMills  Před 11 měsíci +1

      There is not. Here is another video on trying to find the trail that you might like. czcams.com/video/hsB27OHGDoE/video.htmlsi=2trd9_azHTLErHy_

      @@StanMills Well, I don't think I'd like looking for that long lost trail, as I'll be on my own. I'll be in Yellowstone soon (September 20 - 28) and have been looking over my National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps and AllTrails app to help me decide which hikes to take. (Having worked in the park for 5 summers, I've been on quite a few Yellowstone trails.) It looks like the Cougar Creek Cabin Trail skirts along the Madison River and the West Entrance Road for about a mile, starting from the Seven-MIle Bridge trail head, then heads northwest to the patrol cabin at Cougar Creek. But you're saying there's not much of a trail to follow to the patrol cabin. Hence, I'll pass on attempting this trail too. Thanks for posting though!

      @StanMills  Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@stokebailey if you stay on the Gniess Creek trail it is marked good. I have seen both grizzlies and wolves on the trail.

  • @michaelirizarry5653

    Do grizzly's frequent this area of the park?

  • @swainscheps
    @swainscheps Před 11 měsíci

    Evening outbound park traffic got treated to a photogenicGrizzly plodding along the Madison River about a mile east of the Gneiss trailhead a couple of weeks ago. Other than the traffic jam, it was a great way to end our quick visit to the park. I always assumed that stretch of road is too close to civilization to have much wildlife…
