I really love this symphony, I don't think Dvorak's symphony 5 gets enough praise. For me it's up there with all his later masterpieces. It might be my second or third favorite symphony from Dvorak. I prefer it over his sixth and seventh symphonies.
YES!! Sometimes it is not immediately clear what's what for the winds (when they aren't all playing) on the usual scores, and referring back to the first page of a movement is cumbersome. Thank you!

The answer is quite simple: publishers. Dvorák intended this symphony to be his Op.24, but the publisher ignored it and decided to give it the Op.76. Also, before the first 4 symphonies were rediscovered, Symphony No.5 used to be No.3. The old numbering system was as follows: No.6 (Op.60, B.112) was No.1 No.7 (Op.70, B.141) was No.2 No.5 (Op.76, B.54) was No.3 No.8 (Op.88, B.163) was No.4 No.9 (Op.95, B.178) was No.5
French horn is a "strange", interesting instrument, which can sound very different. Sometimes like trombone, sometimes like basson, saxophone, in very low register like tuba...
That clarinet fanfare at the start is so heart meltingly beautiful and pastoral sounding, how could you not love it? Dvorak rules ❤️

This symphony remains neglected by most conductors. Donald Francis Tovey wrote a long piece about it, very insightful.
One has to have a heart of stone not to be moved by the introduction of the clarinettes. Never fails to produce a warm feeling :-)
