Sable Island As you've never seen before

- Last Summer I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to one of the most remote wonders of the world. Sable Island, now a Canadian National Park reserve, has a rich history dating back to the 1600s. It is known as the graveyard of the Atlantic with over 150 recorded shipwrecks. But the major reason it's so well known is for the over 500 wild horses that inhabit the island. It also has over four hundred thousand grey seals that call Sable Island their home. So in partnership with Parks Canada I embarked on my adventure to Sable Island, to document the beauty as its never been done before. With my drone in hand and photo gear on my back, I headed out to the Island in late August 2019. The trip was in the works for two years, but weather and canceled flights (common) forced the trip to be pushed to 2019. Just after the birth of my fourth child I was scheduled to leave for the Island, and with my wife's amazing blessing I started what would be a 7 day stay to capture this amazing place.

All about unique perspectives otherwise unavailable until the drone tech came into play with filming & still images captured with your drone.
So many perspectives here. Never forget to add your "macro" images as these really complete your photo/video essay. These very images of tiny bugs & plant life can be just as dramatic as your flyby of the island taken from above with your drone.
Looking back now what do you think you would have added in hindsight?? After seeing the Doc recently the possibilities are endless!.

I heard about it, I saw pictures from it before but this film was most beautiful of all. So magical place that I wish to see with my own eyes.
Spectacular production! I can't imagine the number of hours that were required to put together such a beautiful cinematographic spectral. I spent 10 days on the island for a mapping project and you captured its majestic solitude so well. Thank you for your wonderful work.
I have flown many times along the length of island while working , but never have I seen the island presented in a more spectacular way. Fabulous , no other words for it.

I had an opportunity to go there in the late 80's - I was very privileged to do so....but never saw it from above, other than from the helicopter. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

A friend of mine on Facebook has been to Sable Island a couple of times now she is a radio personality and a photographer of wild horses. I lived in Nova Scotia for 19 years and i now live in Ottawa, Sadly i never got to see this little spit of land nor the remarkably adept horses who reside there. The photo's i have seen from my friend have been breath taking, You have sown me another side of this remarkable island and its other inhabitants the seal population. It has always amazed me how the horses on this island a sand bar could survive all year round with no trees to protect them or structures to hide behind. They are truly remarkable animals. I have been under the spell of horses my entire life, i enjoy them so much that i spent 2 and a half hours in a paddock of domestic horses to rescue a horse who had a broken halter on and a bit of brush had gotten stuck and it was dangerously close to the horses eye i gained his trust asked him for permission sat with the herd and when i got up to leave the horses all of the domestic herd followed me to the gate them followed me as far as they could go till they could not see me any more. Not treats no gimmicks it was tranquil and peaceful and i felt the most safe than i have ever felt in my entire life. I even laid down in the grass with them while others stood around me as if they were on guard for me to rest like they would do for any of the herd. When i got up and walked towards the gate, you could almost hear them saying to each other where is she going? Whats she doing? She cannot leave us we need her she is part of our herd now come back? I made a promise to come back the next day and i sat in the field again with them for an hour and a half the second day and i brought with me a new halter and the same horse came over and laid down beside me while others stood guard and i asked if i could put the new halter on him and he moved his head towards me and i put it on him and i laid down for a little while longer and again you could almost hear what they were saying as i got up to leave. The best two days of my life was spent there with these horses who accepted me a human as part of their herd. The herd was split up[ but the horses would always stand in front of me if ever there was any danger from horses play fighting or messing around I was always well protected and i loved it there, it was my happy place at a time when my life had taken a bad turn health wise, Anxiety, Depression, i had an illness that nearly killed me literally i was hospitalized for a week i lost my job and my Mother in Law My brother and a co worker all in the space of two years. I volunteered there and i was there for almost 5 years then i was told not to come back and the racing world had taken a hugh hit and there was no need to come back because they had no other contracts coming in. I rescued a horse who was neglected to the point of starvation, his hooves were curled up and ended up with a twisted coffin bone in his hooves at the front he was walking on his heels, he was riddled with lice, he was close to death when i got him one more super cold night this horse would have died during the night and he would be frozen to the ground, He hadn't had his teeth done in forever he had the upper and lower wolfs teeth or Canines crossing over one another causing excruciating pain in his mouth he hadn't had any vaccinations done in years and he had a sway back which happens when reach a certain age and or they were started training too early. I heard the owner was selling him for $500.00 CDN so i came back with an offer of $200.00 CDN for his saddle and the few brushes he had and i want the horse for free because i am going to have to spend a lot of money to get this boy healthy again, I knew he wouldn't have gotten any money for the horse. I paid the money to getting well and get him kitted out with a good tack list spent the money to get him well again and he was almost well back to his proper weight and he had to be put to sleep because of a Neurological Episode was the Vets term. I miss him every day I had loved him and took care of him and i had to let him go I was devastated with the last three owners he had they all neglected him and each time he was built back up sold to the next one and then the process started again for him. His body could go through that again. All i have left of him is a couple of photos i took two weeks before he died, a progress video and some of his tail hairs, that were cut off before they buried him. I love horses and i will get another horse or two or three. I may even start a rescue someday but for now i live with my memories of those horses that have come into my life over time. All the Animals have been rescues cats dogs horse rabbits guinea pigs rats mice. All rescued.

We sailed out July of '19....just for a walk on the beach. With better planning we plan to sail back out this July again for a little longer stay. Truly is a beautiful place. I hope to produce a similar video. Well done.

Have polar bears ever been recorded on Sable Island? I know it's not particularly close to their range, but they are champion swimmers, and are known to occasionally get lost at sea.

There are many horses that die on this island because they eat so much sand their teeth wear out and then they starve to death, one year they found 150 dead horses, think how many came close to death, but somehow survived

Nice place. I had a good burger there. The roads are bumpy but you get good wifi. Beware of rabies though and don't give money to them fake monks.
Looks like they are waiting for the land bridge to reappear so they can migrate somewhere else , of all the places to go they flock at that location of the beach most often than any other place

I believe according to Parks Canada's statements, the horses should be extirpated from the Island. The Parks Act says all non-native species are to be removed from National Parks.

Can’t go along with the crowd. All this dramatic hackneyed music and hoopla for what is a sandbar with some swamp grass and a few horses that don’t belong there and survive tortuous conditions. It seems like you’ve watched way too much Lord of the Rings. Way too much.
