My First Japanese Onsen Experience | Nozawa Onsen

  • The Japanese Onsen, or Japanese hot spring, are a way of life in Japan. At the foothills of Mt. Kenashi lies the sleepy ski town of Nozawa Onsen. Home to just under 4000 people, its built on local farming and seasonal tourism.
That is because, until recently, very few homes in town had their own showers or baths. The local onsen was the daily bathing ritual - and for many villagers it still is.
Throughout the village there’s about thirty different types of hot springs and fourteen public baths.
Most are tucked away behind beautiful wooden doors hidden from the untrained tourist eye.
For my first onsen experience, I ventured into the traditionally-styled Furusato No Yu.
For my second Japanese onsen, I went into SPArena - a newly renovated Onsen which incorporates indoor/outdoor pools.
The big difference between SPArena and the other onsens around town is that you can wear your bathing suit and men/women/children can bath together.
There’s also a restaurant and massage room. It looks like a giant YMCA.
Throw your stuff in a locker, hit the showers and then take your pick on one of the oversized hot tubs!
And perhaps the greatest aspect of this experience, after a soothing soak is the relax room!
Thanks to an invitation by the great staff over at the Ryokan Sakaya hotel, I upgraded from the staff lodge and checked into the one of the most luxurious traditional Japanese hotels in town.
I'm escorted to my room by a lovely little woman who explains the layout and then prepares a welcoming green tea.
She then says that I needed to change into a more appropriate outfit for dinner, and proceeds to show me how.
Dressed to impress, I make my way downstairs to meet the director of the Nozawa Onsen Ski School and his family for dinner. And I had no idea what to expect…
What came next is me joyfully lost in sake-infused state of bold flavors and new discoveries.

My favorite part was you eating with this family! because i love that feeling that I get when I'm in a foreign country and get to share a real local meal with locals and they tell you all about the food, the traditions, etc and for a few minutes/hours, you don't feel like a tourist anymore...you feel like a local..not sure if that's how you felt but i loved that moment! That's the best part of travelling: discovering something new all the time!

loved this video. my wife and I stayed in Japan for two weeks and we almost always ended up in an onsen somewhere and eating awesome food. I think this video perfectly captured that world traveler excitement of experiencing something new. Especially the kaiseki dinner. We stayed at a Ryokan our last night and we had no clue what to wear or how to wear it, had the same problem getting all dressed and then having to go to the bathroom, and then having more weird food placed in front of us than any one person should probably eat. Admittedly, not all of it was good but the entire experience was a roller coaster of surprises, both in taste and aesthetics. Several times the chef fooled us by making food look and feel like like something completely different. The dessert showed that pretty well..."it's something like tofu but weirder and with pineapple...ok i was totally wrong - just apple stuff" haha. Love your videos man, makes me really want to go back.

The "modern onsen" called Sparena looks to be modeled after the Korean sauna/bathhouses called jimjilbang, which are usually enormous and have tons of amenities, including plush relaxation rooms. The jimjilbang model is gaining popularity all over the world now because they really do go above and beyond any other culture's idea of a public bath house.

I've been to Toyko three times, always-on business. I would like to take a vacation there and learn more about the culture vs the city life. My experience is that not too many Japanese speak English (why would they) but are super polite and clean.

    - Sitting in hot water is something I would love to do every day.
I have been in the rustic parts of Vietnam, now, for the last 4 months. I haven't had a hot shower or felt hot water in that amount of time. The closest I have come is the hot water in my Soup. Nuts.
    Keep enjoying Japan!

So why did you have to wear the yukata when the other dinner attendees wore casual wear?
