So who's looking forward to the N64 Mini Classic console and do you think any of these games will end up on it? what do you think the top 5 or top 10 star wars games of all time are? Like me do you love classic NES and SNES star wars games? Do you think the playstation 1 or Dreamcast had any Star Wars games which you'd have liked to have been ported to the Nintendo 64?

I was so torn on Shadows of the Empire at the time. I LOVED the idea of a new story between Empire and RotJ, and like you said the first level with the ATATs was freaking awesome. But after that... I hated the 3rd person levels. Everything just seemed so empty and plain. Rogue Squadron however was friggin awesome at the time, especially as a Star Fox fanboy. Great video, thanks for posting

SNES drunk yeah I’d agree, shadows is the only one that’s hard to play through today for me, any level out of the ship is pretty horrible, hard to control, aim and is pretty bland. I still play through and gold medal every level in Rogue Squadron and Battle for Naboo every couple of years though, they never get old :D I’m kind of meh on racer not because I didn’t like episode 1 but because I’ve never been a big racing game fan.

I didn't mind some of the TP levels in SOTE like the train level but yeah some like the sewers were a nightmare to play and damn creepy! Id love another 100% dogfight Star Wars game like the old x wing series or rogue squadron - always loved them!

Making games like Star Wars SOTE is simply too expensive for developers. Shadows Of The Empire utilized 3 different graphics engines, to allow variety between levels. It was very ambitious project for 1996. For example, notice how dead bodies remain, unlike Turok or Goldeneye. Gameplay physics on train -level, ect...

I think a lot of people don't ever consider the ambience and atmosphere of video games when reviewing them. So you see "official" review scores of some games quite different than fan scores sometimes because of this. As a young teen I felt Shadows of the Empire dropped a lot of the more silly kid-oriented aspects of the Star Wars universe, so that helped me become more immersed with the game. So when you fought Boba Fett, it actually felt like a bounty hunter that not only wants you dead but can kill you (unlike the films).

Really enjoying these ‘collection’ videos you’re doing. You touched upon it in the video, but I think a collection video of all the Expansion Pak games would be interesting, especially to see the differences such as the resolution bump, but also how bad (or good) the frame rate is when using it. I normally keep hi res mode off, but it seems there are some games where it’s ok to turn it on, like Rogue squadron and I find Shadowman is ok with hi res mode on too. I wonder if there are others. It would probably be a large undertaking though!

Big fan of this channel Glenn, few suggestions for other videos: Best n64 titles for parents and kids to play together, and/or siblings. Best titles with deep engaged stories. Groundbreaking titles like Goldeneye for FPS, Mario 64 for 3D platforming, and things modern games still use from these games. Best simulation games, racing, fishing, flying etc. The worst reviewed by critics but loved by fans and vice versa. Best games for gaming tournaments either at home or organized. Your top personally nostalgic games and why. Great video bro! This one is near and dear to me as I sank countless hours into ALL of these growing up, especially SOTE and Rouge Squadron, the latter of which was without hesitation my favorite. Lucas arts used to be a real powerhouse back in the day and it's an awful shame that we probably won't see anything but overrated trash anymore now that Disney and EA has their hands on the franchise.
I always really enjoy your knowledge of the history and the surrounding industry intrigue of the titles you cover in your video. I was just a little too young to be all read up on the game industry of the day but it's really cool hearing about it now. Like the tidbits about the early development cycle of SOTE and the issue of not having a real N64 controller yet. I loved that game a lot and never thought much of it as kid but good lord it shows! Some of the levels really did handle like whoever made it never held the N64 controller.

The only downside of KOTOR 2 is how much content Obsidian had to cut to meet the Lucasarts imposed Xmas 2004 release... However, what did make it into the final release is still really good, but it's only playing the game with the restored content mod that I've realised just how much we were all missing out on back in the day. Infact, I would argue with the restored content it's possibly a better game than the original, even though the original was such a gamechanger; Kreia is just a way more interesting and thought-provoking character than almost anybody else in either game.

The people criticizing Shadows for it’s on-foot missions can eat a shoe. Those were my favorite parts of the whole game; exploring each nook and cranny of all the levels was entertaining and satisfying. The atmosphere of the quiet Star Wars music in the background definitely added to the eerie, lonely feeling of the game, but not in a bad way. My only criticism was the trains level... TOO DAMN LONG, and the battle at the end was incredibly frustrating. Yes, the whole game could have used a nice polishing on some of the controls, but it certainly wasn’t un-manageable. Still one of my top favorites, and I still pop it in from time to time... Might have to do that tonight and show the kids how I spent my evenings inside as a kid.

I remember going to blockbuster and getting rouge squandrant multiple times and loving the x wing and of course my mom couldn’t wait to take me to see episode 1 and I was like 5 or something and totally blown away by it all in theaters and she got me pod racer and I played that game every waking moment I wasn’t at school every chance I got. Sebulba was easily my favorite but sadly took a long while to unlock him. I ended up buying a 1001 cheat codes book at a book sale (you don’t see cheat code books anymore) and using all the whacky and fun cheat codes for pod racer and I remember going back to block buster and re-renting rouge squandrant again so I could use the cheat code book and play as the naboo fighter. I easily spent twice as much time playing the podracing game than on all of the other ones, combined, and I’ve beaten all of them. The podracing controls were amazingly tight for something that fast, and you could even use two controllers (basically two thumb sticks and the Z buttons) to make the driving experience more like what you see in the movie. The upgrades are very noticeable and rewarding, and many of the different pods/racers feels quite different from one another.
Pro-tip: Use Bullseye Navoir. His ship, upgraded all the way, is like riding a dragonfly. If you can’t make a turn at full speed, it’s not the problem.

    • @Oleander410
      @Oleander410 Před 3 lety

Glenn said he likes Sebulba (who you won’t get until you beat the game). He IS the flat out fastest, (and he has the only actual weapon on his pod, in the form of that side-vent attack from the movie) but his pod is huge and steers like it. For a game where turning accuracy is usually more important than sheer top speed, he’s one of my least favorite pods, unless I know a course so we’ll that I just feel like showing off.

I'll never forget all the great memories I had playing Shadows of the Empire, the first time I played the Hoth level is one of my most favorite memory as a gamer and I love Dash Rendar I thought he was cool. Episode 1 Racer is also one of my favorite racing games. Star Wars was just great for the Nintendo 64.

Reminiscing about the N64 and its library of games, Shadows of the Empire is always one of the first games that comes to my mind. Visually the game was extremely impressive for its time, especially the larger levels with their huge dimensions both in width as in verticality. Personally, I never took issue with the 3rd person sections of the game. Quite to the contrary, I think they are the real highlights of the game and not the flying sections which are great but extremely short. Game was a very interesting genre mix and really did feel like a new Star Wars movie you could play through.
All in all, I would argue that aside from the PC the N64 is the gaming platform with the best Star Wars games. It's only four games but all four of them are great.

  • @martinalther9304

Slight nitpick: Battle For Naboo came out in late-2000/early-2001. Not late-1999/early-2000. :) Otherwise, I agree that Rogue Squadron was definitely the best of the N64's Star Wars games. The graphics, the music. Basically everything in that game completely nailed "Star Wars" in a way no game had ever done before or until Knights of The Old Republic. Battle For Naboo was also great, but you can count me in as one of those people who found the Episode 1 license more of a hindrance than a help.

When I first played Shadows of the Empire I always thought they tried to make a 3d version of the SNES Super Star Wars games in that they went for a variety of levels with different styles much like most early N64 games. I was always disappointed with it. The other 3 however were all real hardware pushers. Also loved that the Baboo Starfighter was so well hidden in Rogue Squadron, probably only that and the Goldeneye cheats only managed to stay hidden for so long. Battle for Baboo is one of those games that really show how good Factor 5 was with the system in the end as much like Rare they had reverse engineered the system to really push the limits, sadly though if you want a complete in box version of it it will still set you back around its original RRP or more depending on condition as it was released so late in the systems life.
