    It will definitely take some time after 2021 before games start to have this level of detail - the scanned 3d assets (they used Quixel Megascans for this) take up a *lot* of space on your hard drive, and they will have to be streamed to the GPU far more efficiently than is currently possible on a gaming pc.
    But the more important aspect of Nanite (the billion-triangles-technology-thingy) is that it just straight out eliminates the need to create LODs for 3d assets. Artists won't need to create low quality versions of their ingame models anymore, and this will free up a lot of resources for game devs. A similar thing is true for Lumen (dynamic GI): No need to bake those pesky lightmaps anymore.
    This is fantastic.

    I studied 3D animation and to render the first frames of this would take forever (from hours to days). The level of detail is astounding.

    • @RicochetForce
      @RicochetForce Před 4 lety +1

      Yup, they switched from the traditional model of having a master high quality model that they then go through the process of creating multiple LOD state versions of (for various draw distances) and the appropriate normal maps (2D textures imitating the lost detail of the high quality model) for each one. All of that being replaced with models whose detail is always the master model but the amount of pixels dedicated to them is dictated by occlusion, their relative size on screen, etc... This pretty much kills pop-in and increases the level of detail across the board. Furthermore, since it's the master model they can take lighting and shadows better than normal maps.
      The ground alone looks better than any terrain in any prior generation. Fuck tesselation, my god.

    UE5 is a revolutionary breakthrough for games. As a game dev, I can't wait for it.
    previous game devs and game artists are limited to use less resolution 3d models with limited polygons in the 3d models. To overcome this problem games devs created an alternative method of faking it by baking normal maps on the low poly model. it's a long process to optimize 3d models to make them look like high poly models and baking them for normal maps. This UE5 can handle billions of tris (polygons) in the engine. Which means games dev doesn't need to waste their time in optimizing models and baking. And for GI (Global Illumination) now in UE5, it can do it in real-time without making pre-rendered baked maps which means no headache of twerking and making fake lightmaps.
    I hope you understand.
    I am super excited about UE5.

      I'm curious of what kind of optimization done here that makes this viable and possible?

    • @AithaChannel
      @AithaChannel Před 4 lety

      @@Crazy09starkillor technique is simple with less performance impact. UE5 using tech from the VFX industry. previously all 3d models present in camera view were load into the game. but in new, the 3d models were loaded as pixels which means every pixel is one triangle. the far the player goes the smaller the tri-pixels become. just as photos.

    • @Crazy09starkillor
      @Crazy09starkillor Před 4 lety

      @@AithaChannel you're talking about occlusion right? What about game sizes? All the direct zbrush imports must take up significantly more space right?

    • @AithaChannel
      @AithaChannel Před 4 lety

      @@Crazy09starkillor this is next-gen the size will always increase. but if export to obj file (3d format.) it's so less when compared to ZBrush files and the thing is textures take a lot size then the 3d models sometimes. so it's kind of balance because you get ridding of normals maps, LOD's, (optional height maps, smooth maps baked object lightmaps), and lightmaps. so many maps are gone, all of them will be 2k to 8k maps its a lot of size. ue5 games may increases size from 10% to 45% of our current-gen games. but it also depends upon the type of game. how they use their assets. My point is they said unlimited polygons but game devs always try to optimize the models. previous we optimize models for so many hrs now will optimize the model for 30 mins just to get rid of excess polygons. to make a hole in the 3d model we struggle a lot to make for optimizing the model. now we don't need to worry about it.

    To clarify this technology isn't only for PS5, it's technically compatible with any console other than cheaper ones like the Switch, since their SSD's don't have the write speeds to keep up with it. The idea is that the software dynamically installs and uninstalls assets as they're used. At least for the data size issue at least. Lumen and particle AI system works without those techniques, they're different features of their own. As a virtual artist I can't help but be excited for this.

    Basically a game asset normally would be around 12-15k triangles without loosing too much performance.
    You ever hear of "low-poly" games? Sea of Thieves would be a good example of low-poly. Very "blocky" but can still make a good game.
    However if you want great details you have to make LoDs. Which stand for Level of Detail. When you are far away it has very low details because you don't need to see them so the engine won't waste power to show details that you can't even see. So you have to make different levels of Detail for each of your game models.
    This allows you to have 1 million polys and no loss of detail. If you look at any open world game you understand that some stuff doesn't spawn in until you get closer. This is to save performance and frame rate.
    Also most details when you do get close are done with tricks of lighting like normal maps and other things like displacement which just changes the geometry of the object without effecting the poly counts.
    If I could sculpt something with high detail and am not restricted by poly counts, you bet you ass that I'm making some premium objects for my games. This is just a very basic overview of what is happening technically. I could also go into lighting but basically you have to change the position of the light and "bake" it so it can tell where the shadows are in reference to the light source. Here you can just input a light source and it does the work for you in real-time so you don't have to mess with different lighting positions.
    A game like Horizon Zero Dawn achieves some of these feats by only rendering the objects that are in front of you and just outside of you periferrals. As you turn around it renders in objects. Also the AI is tethered to specific locations so that if you get far enough away they won't chase you. This is so you don't have a hoard of AI screwing with performance as they chase you through the entire map because every one of the robots has a huge poly count.

    I'm still going to wait. This was an amazing Tech Demo, but this is a demo of Unreal Engine 5, which is an engine that's also going to be available for Xbox Series X and PC. I'd wait for actual games running on each system before jumping in completely.

    This isnt a false promise. The xbox one and ps4 both were still running very low end specs. even the xbox one x and the ps4 pro had a very, very outdated cpu and still both were running HDDs and not SSDs. The specs in these new consoles are midrange to mid high range PC level specs. Something like this demo would most likely remain at 60fps but that all just depends on how they/the developers decide to make their game. The best thing could be is they give free reign to us for graphical settings and dont constrain FPS values to 60 on games like this demo, even at 4k. I dont think the actual games will look as good as this demo, because it's a demo, but i wouldnt expect to see that many games at launch to be using UE5. I would expect most developers would stick with UE4 for at least a year, with the exception of newer games that arent already a part of a big franchise. But i will say just make sure your TV has HDMI 2.1 and that it obviously can do 120hz natively. Because you wont wanna miss out on the games that will allow 120fps.

    About the comment on wanting to buy a PS5 asap, it sounds like you (read: most consumers) should wait. Sony hasn't said much, but MS has already been talking about limiting quantities of consoles at launch. Phil Spencer (Xbox head) also stated earlier this month that game production most likely will be delayed due to... current world events, and that Halo Infinite is the only game committed to launching with the console. The PS5 may be in the same boat. We'll have to see closer to launch, but the start of this generation may be rocky (and rendered beautifully in Unreal Engine).

    Aside from the it just looks so much better stuff, if what they are saying is/will be true this will massively cut down on the time artists need to make and introduce assets into the game, which will either cut down a ton of development time or make games have more content. It is such a huge deal.
