First Bird Attack on my DJI mini 3 pro. Danger, panic, relief, in that order.

  • 4 weeks ago I took off to get some aerial footage when I noticed a bird circling below the drone, gradually getting higher. After the first close call I went higher and into sports mode, moved about 50 metres away and went for a quick decent with the bird following. He took one final swoop before I landed safe and sound.
I don't think it would have attacked the drone as it wasn't a bird of prey, but you can never be too careful.

Been doing this for years: sports mode thrust full throttle up. I know the first thing you want to do is bring the drone back down to safety it feels like the right thing to do. But what you want to do is throttle up in sports mode quickly it's easier for a bird to dive down to catch up to the drone then it is to fly up, it takes longer for them to fly up and most birds can't catch up to the drone in sports mode when it's full throttle going up. There's also something alpha about flying up that seems to deter birds. Next time give it a try sports mode throttle up and see if it works. I've had multiple birds attack my drones over the years and sports mode throttling up works very quickly every time

Thanks for the helpful advice. I went up and sidewards in full sports mode, or full panic mode in my case 😆 I suppose the more you come across the situation, the better prepared you are.

I bought a $10 roll of reflective tape and put strips on the arms, top, bottom and batteries for my m3p because I film 3 days a week at a construction site for almost 2 years and experience bird swoops frequently. Works very well on sunny days. The birds get an eyeful of the sun reflecting and stay away! * I got the idea from CZcams….

I wonder if painting big eagle eyes on it would be a deterrent. I sometimes fly by my job, and when I go up the pigeons come out of nowhere and start flying circles around it. Going straight up does work well. Took a hit once. The controller started alerting and one rotor stopped but I was able to make a controlled landing. Some feathers came drifting down like a cartoon. I stopped and restarted the rotors and everything was ok.

At the same time, the main problem was not the birds of prey, they were more or less calm. But the pigeons - they appeared unexpectedly. They, like kamikaze, without fear, the whole flock rushed at my drone. And a couple of times I almost lost it. After coloring "under the bee" I forgot about the problem.

It looks like you encountered a falcon. The worst thing you can do is panic. That's exactly what prey does. Falcons are notorious for attacking and eating other birds. I once saw a falcon dive bomb a dove. The dove did exactly what you did. It panicked and was so afraid of where the falcon was that it flew right into the side my camper breaking its neck. the falcon then swooped down and flew off with its prey. In your video there were a bunch of birds on the ground huddled together. That's something I have learned to pay attention too. If they are acting nervous it's because they see a predator. @eleglace posted that the best thing to do was flip to sports mode and fly straight up. That works most of the time. But falcons are a little more crafty. I will not only fly up but will also bank and try to circle the falcon. This is not the behavior of prey, but another predator. I will often fly forward then quickly change directions flying backwards. sometimes you can catch a great shot as birds of prey often attack from the back. This displays characteristics that the falcon cannot do and it usually causes them to rethink their intentions. "Am I attacking prey or another predator?" I have never lost a drone to a predator, because I have learned not to panic. Drones can execute maneuvers that even human pilots cannot do. Be the UFO. Our own military pilots encounter UFO aircraft that they know they cannot compete with because their technology is superior. So be the UFO. That's what we are to the birds. It's funny really, to think that our best pilots might be the victims of some alien kid with his toy saucer (drone). the alien kid is just having fun but our pilots are left feeling totally out flown and defeated. Once that falcon realized that it can't outfly you it will most likely fly away. At least most of the time. Not much you can do though if it is already flying high above you and decides to dive. Falcons can dive at over 100 miles an hour once it selects a target. If it hits you going that speed your done. Nothing is foolproof but so far, I've been attacked but haven't been knocked out and I've been flying 5 years. I was attacked by a very large falcon over open water. There was no place to land. So I just flipped into sports mode and flew forward at full speed into the wind. The falcon is strong but cannot handle flying directly into the wind like a drone can. So I was able to pull away untouched. By the way, nice landing. Very well executed.

I spaced out my tree crash and bird attack by a couple of weeks. I'm just wondering what else could go wrong!!!!!😅

I was always told just to stay still, they want to look to see that its not a threat and then will leave alone.

It all depends on the type of bird. A bird of prey will see a stationary drone as an easy prey and some larger birds will physically attack. Smaller birds it should be OK and the tiny songbirds think it's someone to play with. I have always been told to rapidly gain height as birds are slower going up and try to leave the area and land somewhere close by. That's what I tried to do, but was limited on safe landing places so had to move around before making a fast descent.

That's always my biggest fear as I want to film more over water. Sorry to hear about your drone loss.

Roll around and get on his six, change the tides on him. I've had some pretty cool rc dog fights with birds.
