  • In 2021, we made our first ever visit to the Strasburg Rail Road. It also happened to be our first time seeing one of our all-time favorite locomotives in person.

    What a great day out, thanks for taking us along. Lovely to see the beautiful J in action, even on a job rather beneath it. So much else to see as well, the magnificent coaches (cars?) and lots of interesting places on the route. The glorious weather was a bonus. A very professional video, thanks for posting. Best wishes

    Very nice. I've been to the Strasburg Railroad numerous times (my grandmother lived out in Lancaster County), and credit it, as well as a certain blue tank engine, with instilling a deep passion for trains and railroads within me. I also had the chance to see #611 at Strasburg in 2019, and am very glad the "Queen of Steam" has been restored to operating condition.

      On our trainboard, our railroad is the indian valley railroad. Thomas and shining time are and were huge influences for us. We love the j. Absolutely.

      @@TheTrainboard Indeed. If I'm not mistaken, the Indian Valley Railroad was an actual shortline, in addition to being the setting for Shining Time Station. Moreover, I read somewhere that portions of the movie "Thomas & the Magic Railroad" were filmed at Strasburg, with one of the engines having "Indian Valley" lettered on its tender.

      @Stussmeister we will definitely check further...we picked indian valley railroad for a very good reason. Much appreciated.

    Awesome video! I love N&W 611! I’ve been going to Strasburg since 2011! I also got to see 611 for the first time in 2019, and got to go in its cab!

    Oh wow, you went to the "Holy Ground" of Strasburg and visited Mighty 611, the greatest passenger steam engine ever built!
    (OK, fans of Santa Fe and Union Pacific 4-8-4's may not agree but that's fine, WE here in Virginia know better!)
    We rode behind 611 several times during the N-S Steam Program days prior to N-S killing the program in 1994. Let me tell you, that broke as many hearts here in VA as Lee's surrender at Appomattox did in 1865! The wife was furious, she called 611 "MY engine!" and has held a grudge against N-S ever since! 611's the best!
    Oh, we rode behind 1218 as well. You remember how I said a Big Boy's a LOT bigger than you think it is? This is going to be hard to believe but 1218, the N&W 2-6-6-4, is smaller than you think it is! I was surprised when I saw it up close.
    How about those fancy railcars? Wow! What a way to travel!
    Thanks for bringing us along!

      I presume you mean " the greatest passenger steam engine ever built in the US "?

    • @TheTrainboard
      @TheTrainboard  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Wayne, as a train guy, it hard for me to choose engines. The only large egines I've seen in person are the j611 and Greenbriar 614. The daylight, run occasionally in California has been in my #1 position for years. After seeing the steamtown static display big boy 24 years ago, I was amazed. I was disillusioned to not see the j run at full speed vs strasburg's pitiful 15 mph. Thanks so much. Gary

      @@TheTrainboard Hi Gary! When we rode 611 during the N-S program the top allowed speed was 45 MPH, but that was impressive enough. In service the Class J's were easily capable of 70 MPH and on one occasion a J running on the N&W "racetrack" between Petersburg and Norfolk hit 115 MPH! Briefly that is, until the engineer felt "Discretion is the better part of valor!" and backed off on the throttle.
      611 ran on the Buckingham Branch RR down here in VA during 2023 and MAY have done the 45 MPH speed again, but I'm not sure, I missed those excursions.

    Hi guys,Howard here.I just saw an email from Pats trains and they have an atlas premier santa fe black bonnet 8 car 70 foot set for pre order and i thought you might like to know.

    • @TheTrainboard
      @TheTrainboard  Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks so much. We did see pat announcing the 18 inch 70 foot bonnet cars available for preorder, by atlas. Pat has started to lower his previously high prices, often list price, no discount. Finally. Ive hear he is considering a price match policy. Those car. I suspect, are using the old mth premier molds. Pats has never offered premier cars, just railking. My train budget took major hits in last 12 months, so mark me so distraught. We will see.
