  • The modification of our 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 with the 2.8 Duramax diesel engine continues. We've added armor, storage, a Roofnest Condor tent, a Cascadia 4x4 VSS solar panel, and a few other accessories that were all tested during a 2 week long road trip out to Ouray, Colorado. Which of these mods will stay on the truck will stay as the build continues, and how close are we getting to the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)? We head to the scales to find out.

Funny I just saw that hood panel on another rig and was on the website last night to see if they had any for the Colorado! Good to know one works out, im guessing they figured most of the Colorado crowd interested would have zr2s and that hood wouldn’t work out lol. So you have it hooked up to charge the main battery while the truck is off?

Yup! I have it wired to the main/starter battery. No issues with it at all. Cascadia4x4 responded to an IG post a while back and asked how the panel worked out with the OEM hood design on the truck, since there is a bit of a crease line in the center of the hood as it flows toward the grill. Those panels have a little bit of flex to them, but they're not designed to bend. I haven't had any issues with it on my Z71 hood.

Going through the same process with my ‘19 Z71 CC long bed, V6.
Right now with fiberglass camper shell, custom built steel “trapezoid” tool box which sits on bed rails right under the shell, ZR2 sliders basic tools and two adults I’m at about 5130 lbs.
    GVWR is 6000.
Now gotta figure in tongue weight for our Casita trailer . I plan to at least swap the plastic front skid for GM aluminum , maybe a few more . Dropped the idea of a winch bumper; might just do a cradle for when I’m going where it
I’m slowly moving more trailer specific gear to the trailer , as I’m easily under the 12,000 combined max. Casita is 3500 loaded . Dropped the idea of a winch bumper, I’d rather use that 150 or so pounds somewhere else. Might go with a receiver cradle mount for when I’m going somewhere rough.
The plan is a tow pig/ adventure rig if I’m by myself . Daily driver . By myself I sleep in the back , hence the shell and 6’ bed , I’m also a part-time musician, gotta keep the gear out of the weather.
Keep those Z71 videos coming ! Some of the most sensible out there .

      Oh, I found the tool
box used on Marketplace. Great idea , keeps the whole length of the bed free. I think the builder should mass market them, but out of aluminum .

Thanks for watching! We're definitely problem-solving some of the same stuff. 5130# doesn't sound too bad with all of the extras you listed on your rig, and for a CCLB at that. I'd love a full front winch bumper but I don't think I can afford the weight. May need to go with a lightweight winch cradle or custom half-bumper that fits in the front bumper section between the fog lights. I do dig those Casitas. Would be curious to know what the tongue weight is.

      Tongue weight is around 400.
Hit Bambi’s Dad before thanksgiving ; considered full winch bumper in lieu of replacing the bumper skin..what few full I found were heavy of bulky. decided to go back with original . Decided I’d rather use the weight for skids …and beverage
There are quite a few replacements for the mid section, might not be as heavy .
It’s been quite a change moving down from a Ram 2500 Cummins.Ive been full
size since 97. Last small vehicle was my 85 S15 Jimmy (Mini blazer twin)
I went everywhere and that underpowered little pig.
