Two years on an old logging road in Northern Minnesota

  • This camera was out in the woods for almost 2 years (2021-2023) and here is the "highlight reel"! What makes this video particularly neat is that we got footage of virtually every large carnivore in northern Minnesota aside from the “black cougar” that some locals claimed to have seen and the famed but elusive ’squatch.
    And by large carnivore we mean anything the size of a pine marten or bigger. Unfortunately, we did not get footage of otters which are only large carnivore missing. But we did get lynx, a badger(!), bobcats, wolves, a red fox, coyotes, martens, fishers, a skunk, and black bears!
    The video is also a great comparison between the size difference of wolves and coyotes at different points in the year. Basically, while the wolves we study are generally on the smaller size (55-67 lbs), they are still much larger than coyotes.
    The wolves in the video are the primarily members of the Blood Moon Pack as this camera was squarely in that pack’s territory. Though in one winter sequence toward the end of the video you see the Windsong Pack -7 wolves-blatantly trespassing!
    Big thanks to the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund for their continued support of our project which allows us to capture and share videos such as this with everyone!

    💙👍...Beautiful nature scene.
    Animals are drawn to these old trails as they're so much easier to navigate than the thick underbrush of the bush.

    Many people get confused of lynx and bobcats. Though the bobcat is a different type of lynx. The difference between the two is: Lynxes have longer legs and long ear tufts and bobcats have shorter legs and have shorter ear tufts. Lynx have little spots and bobcats have lots of spots, bobcats tails are longer and lynx tails are shorter.

      Yes, there are a couple bobcats, but the one at 4:37 is a lynx. Note the prominent ear tufts and the huge paws.

    If the part where the wolves were all walking together at night was a picture, you could call it,
    "The Parade of Eyes"

    I’ve watched other trail cam vids that use closed captions to ID the wildlife. Could you do that, please? It would be much appreciated.

    • @sonicbaseballzoodreams
      @sonicbaseballzoodreams Před rokem

      @@hyenaboy7504 Because the gray wolf has many subspecies; all of them are super close relatives all belonging to the genus canis. While there are most wild dog species that belongs into the genus Canis too.
