  • Moses is our Livestock Guardian Dog in training. We wanted to give you an update on him, and how he is doing. Moses is starting to enter his adolescent stage, and beginning to test a few boundaries with the animals. If you are new to raising LGD's, don't freak out when this happens, because it will happen eventually. Especially if you are raising a LGD puppy without an experienced LGD already on the property. We are taking extra precautions during this crucial part of his training. We hope you find the video informational if you've found yourself in the same boat as us.

As a retired Military Working Dog Handler/trainer, you have a pretty solid plan in place. Only thing I would suggest is to ensure your training sessions are short and frequent, he is still a pup, and they end on a good note. Training a dog is training a dog. I defiantly understand the desire to learn from someone that trains livestock guardian dogs.... Fact of the matter is, there are countless ways to get a " desired behavior", who is to say its wright or wrong as long as the end result is the desired behavior.....

🦅 Great job Alex & Jacob. Moses is learning very well. When I first moved to Texas, I brought with me my service dog who turned out to be a fantastic LGD. One night she heard something out in the pasture and left the house on her own. It was a few coyotes out near my sheep and she took off to handle that. My two rams joined her and she tried to get them to return to the herd but they stood their ground and the three of them sent the predators on their way. After that night, the rams stayed with Sarah whenever she walked the fence but not before putting the does and lambs up in the barn. I marveled at how she worked and allowed the rams to help her. Sarah was a collie shepherd mix and came from LGD stock. She came to me at the age of ten months so she had some instruction from her parents. Sarah was as good a service dog as she was LGD.
You are training Moses right. From what I have seen, there really is no need for the e-collar but, I would still get one for the back burner. Moses may not ever need it but, if you get another LGD puppy.. it might be needed. Don't want to take to much attention away from the goats for him to correct the puppy. Just a precaution measure.
Keep up the great work you do with Moses and Judah. It is paying off with dividends.
GOD BLESS YOU ALEX AND JACOB AND MOSES AND JUDAH.🦅

Our rams and does mourned her for a few months but they stayed close to her pup Shadrach. I lost him to a thief who had stolen a few LGD's in our area. I had to leave for a while...🦅

We had a livestock guardian dog before I was born. I was raised working the animals with her.
My dad also raised and trained registered hunting dogs from before I was born until I was in grade school. We were all involved in the process... so I learned how to train dogs without realizing it.
Our livestock guardian dog died when I was in late elementary school. We went through a few puppies after that that didn't work out because my dad wasn't able to have the time to train them.
We got one when I was in high school. She would go with me when I ran and I worked with her then. She protected me from other animals, kept out of my feet/path, learned the term that she was too rough, as well as the normal- sit, stay, no... I had to be with my dad and brother then to teacher her how to help with the animals. After time she would go out with my dad to move the animals as well as her usual perimeter protection.
I would go sit in the pasture with my reading books to spend time close to her. It was at that time that I would correct or praise her accordingly .. but I always had my book to focus on to just be there when I didn't need to be focused on her.

What I see is that Moses is doing well. I trained three dogs to protect my foul. This stage of a dogs development was the hardest to get through. Mine were just looking for playmates but like you stated that is NOT OK. Dogs like children just need love/discipline, looks like he will get through it just fine.
PS; one of the dogs I trained was a Rottweiler, he was the best dogs I have ever had for protecting my foul. He was just a natural, once he got past the puppy stage.
    Good luck and God bless

Jacob you are doing the right thing. Putting him in a kennel run where he can see the animals run around him is a very good thing. If you need a training tip look at Upstate Canine University on CZcams. The man teaches dogs to behave so they do not wind up in shelters. The man also teaches the words "Leave it" to stop interactions around other dogs and should work the same as the other animals. Moses is just a young one, you are doing it right. I have not trained a livestock dog but had to teach ours to quit messing with the cat. My command in a stern voice was "Leave Alone" and my dog got the message. Keep up the good work with your "teenager" and he will be just fine.

  • @kathymcleod1460

You are doing a great job of training Moses. The only idea I have is your timing of your praise when going through gates. You are telling him he is a good boy when you release him from the sit and not for the actual sitting. He obviously knows what you want. I talked to a dog trainer and she said the key is to train (reward) the behaviour you do want. So yes you don't want Moses to play with the goats but what do you want him to do instead? Train for that. Do you want him to go up to a goat and sit, lay down, grab a toy instead. Whatever you decide is what you train him for. So the idea is to focus the training on what you want him to do and not on what you don't want him to do. I hope that is clearer than mud. Keep up the great work and keep us posted.

how to train a guardian dog with animals.
Start to leash train your puppies (also in my free guide). Let them see the livestock through the fence and see how they react to them. Work on keeping them calm around the livestock with obedience training. You want to learn your dogs' body language so that you can prevent them from acting excited

You're on the right track! Puppies will be puppies and they have to be trained and you're doing a great job with him. Running after animals is play that will lead to killing, killing is natural for dogs and without training, any dog can become a killer. That doesn't mean they're a bad dog, they just untrained and don't know any better. Moses is going to be a great livestock guardian dog with the training you're giving him.
Also, being in a pen is not abuse, it's the way to keep them safe and with him being let out of the pen with his humans is quality tie!

  • @Jaynes-Path
    @Jaynes-Path Před 3 lety +2

He's the dog equivalent of a teenager with the understanding of a 5 year old.. Bored, full of hormones, & wanting to play. Pushing all the limits to find where the walls are. A older LGD would put him in his place faster than the older nannies would, but he doesn't have that teacher. His humans have to repeatedly stop him until he follows them in his sleep. Rewarding the good, stopping the bad behavior. Chasing is a instinct and even in breeds that have been bred for LGD work for hundreds of years, their older pack members stop them and they see others being stopped too. It takes at least a full year on the farm of learning and monitoring before they can be trusted fully. What Jacob is saying is not unusual. Stopping the behavior instantly is the only way to stop it. 10 min later and Moses won't understand why he's being told no. Good job trying to explain it to non farm, non working dog people.

But I don’t have farm animals, well I do, I have 1 yes just one chicken. She has no she is a chicken. Lol
She just showed up in my front yard one day 1 1/2 years ago. She was just a new baby chick and was in my flowerbed.
I live in a neighborhood and as far as I know no one has chickens. But someone did, now I do. Built her a place out back and she follows me around the yard like a puppy. Her name is Marilyn and I even bring her in the house when it gets below freezing. Lol. She, my cats and dog all get along fine, craziest thing ever. I do keep her in a big dog pen at night in the house and cover her up with a blanket so she can have privacy. Lol.
What I life I have. Now I retired 5 years ago, I never dreamed I would have all these animals. But I do and I love animals and they are very loving back.

I wonder if that behaviour was encouraged when he found how much fun it was playing with your other dog. He learned quickly it was fun to tussle with another animal. Now it should be the same way with his goat friends. I can see his confusion. Good training I know you can do it. Keep everyone safe. God bless.

Jacob and Alex...love the channel. You both are good loving puppy parents and we all know that. Do what you think is best. Always remember what other people think about you is none of your business.

I trained our pyrenees/anatolian the same way. Only thing I added was a collar with a remote. Only had to use the buzzing sound to break him. He is 1 1/2 yrs old now. Now I am training a akbash/anatolian to add to the herd. The older dog is actually correcting the younger pup now. It is very exciting to see. You all are doing an awesome job!

loved the start of the video! I have no idea how to train a dog ( my 3 sleep with me and my husband, I'm a bubbling idiot around dogs, I love them so much) but it looks to me like that dog is very lucky to have you guys. Great video!

One thing I noticed is your reward of an enthusiastic "Good Boooyyy!" gets him excited. I know you want to praise and emotionally reward him for doing the right thing. However, perhaps there is a way to reward him in this training phase without the auditory cue, and see if it keeps his energy level down.
The other suggestion I would make is to exercise him outside of the goat enclosure. Moses is bursting with energy. The combination of getting him outside the enclosure might become an outlet for his excitement, and couple that with a long, tiring walk (perhaps while you bike), or as he looks like a puller, give him some sled / wagon pulling exercises. I realize he has free reign of an enclosure, but that is not the same as having a good, high-intensity workout for burning energy.

Thank you for this. We just acquired 2 Anatolian Shepherd / Great Pyrenees puppies that are 10 weeks old. This is great information to help us train them.
