I still cannot get over you’re playing on tour de force just blows me away elegant gypsy suit is the craziest stuff ever
Thanks for the nice comment, but I'm not Jan Hammer - I did not play on Elegant Gypsy or Tour de Force. I"m sure Jan would love to hear that though!
Nice job. Love me some Jan.
Hammer . I was listening to your music in the 60's on Polish Radio in Warsaw .
It was allways in the morning and allways on the HAMOND .
You NAILed 🔨 it like an ANIMAL ⚡
Outstanding, my incredibly talented friend!
The Jordan Rudess/prog metal style of keyboard playing must have drawn some inspiration from Hammer. I can't play for nuts, but I was glad to see a pitch bend wheel on a little midi-controller I picked up. It seems it can only bend up or down one note or tone. It makes me wonder how much differently pitch bend wheels must have worked on early Moogs & the like.
the 'one step' range of midi controller wheels can be chnaged on the receiving end. I currently have all my wheels set to bend up or down a 4th, but earlier instruments were not so standardized, sometimes beinding as much as a 6th or more. Hard to control!
Thanks!@@nailmusic
Great job👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
😊 Wow!! Nicely played. Any more of this kind coming?
perhaps...what would you suggest?
@@nailmusic Hammer's '70s fusion material appeals to keyboardists, but I often thought his incidental music for Miami Vice had an essential quality the 70s material generally did not: atmosphere! "Russian Night" could be my favourite tune by him. It wouldnt fit with a Mahavishnu programme, though! Possibly a tune from his Scenario album w/DiMeola (Mata Hari) would. Or from the 70s: the two duet albums with David Earle Johnson, which are almost solo albums since it's just keyboards & a percussionist.
@@owenmcgee8496honestly I love a lot of the MV work - brilliant compositions, great moods. "Evan" is a standout for me. Will go back and listen to Russian Nights
Wow, incredible. Really.
On the wishlist for a next time: bamboo forest or something from the black sheep album 😊
ah....Black Sheep. Love that disc.
Dead on perfect! Is the lead sound just the Voyager? If so it's the best Voyager I've ever heard. I have a 72 MMMD and a Oberheim SEM, the punch is just nuts!!
Hey thanks for the comment! Yes, lead is only the voyager. I figured out how to dial it in. :) The sequence is the cherry Audio 8 Voice SEM emulator; I"m pretty sure Jan was using an Oberheim 2 Voice and the DS2 Sequencer for this.
Cool, been looking at the Voyager for along time,
every demo was so meh, So I just past, I wish you had made this video many years ago. The programming is a great upgrade.
Jet Stream / Black Sheep....if you taking requests
lol
Cheers
Great job. I'm using a Moog Voyager RME and the Little Phatty TE Edition myself, and I'm really interested in Jan Hammers Moog lead sounds. Your "No Fear" patch is really nailing the original: is it a variant form the factory banks or completely rebuilt from scratch? And do you have any additional resources for rebuilding Jan Hammer leads, including VA modelling of his (mostly Marshall) amplification?
Hey Defrigge - Thanks for watching and for your kind words! As an old school synth guy from way back, I built the patch myself. As far as recreating his other sounds, there are 2 keys: one is the sync sweep sound (which the early moogs didn't have - he had a modfied oberhiem) and the other is an old MXR Flanger (the green one). The MXR makes the harmonics move around in such a way as to mae the sound really come alive. As far as distortion stuff, I just make my own "guitar" patches. WIth the exact gear that Jan was using I wouldn't know what I was going for. Plus, I'm focusing on my own sounds these days. But that Jan original Minimoog lead has always been part of my sound set. Cheers, mate!
@@nailmusic Thanks for the answer, Neil! I have a grey MXR MX-117 Flanger and don't know of any green one (including vintage). Green rather reminds me of the Ibanez Tube Screamer. Can you clarify? I'm aware of Jan's Oberheim sync use, which can easily be recreated on a Voyager. The only thing I miss from my Voyager is the additional snappy in the face punch, wich a Model D offers, especially for Jan's short attack sounds, with variations of saw and square waveform combinations.
@@defrigge yes, the grey one. It’s a plug in unit, yes?
The real trick to the “Snap” is this: plug the headphone out of the RME into the audio in jack. Turn up the headphone out to about 70 percent; then slowly dial in the audio in and listen as the sound begins to change. It should get darker and punchier. Play around with the levels. I think you’ll find it tightens up the sound considerably. Best of luck!
@@nailmusic Yes that's the old Moog saturation/overdrive trick. But as far as I know, this can't replace the brutal punch of the original Model D (if you compare both side by side). Anyways, I'm fine with what is there, and thanks again for the feedback!
This is from "Like Children" with Jerry Goodman right? That's some awesomeness!
Yes, from "Like Children" - an obscure but killer track. Thanks for listening!
That album was ahead of it's time. It's fantastic!
Great, Nman.
How did you video this?
Just an iPhone on a stand. Super easy.
