Beautiful arrangement with choir and orchestra. This is a major feast in many Christian denominations! Let us keep our eyes on Christ; never mind others who seek other means of living. WE ARE CALLED TO FOLLOW CHRIST-love God and love our neighbor- no matter what!! LIFT HIGH THE CROSS for ALL to see !!
Ooh, how wonderful to hear that majestic choir singing this touching reveille, calling the entire Church Triumphant to rise up and join the harmony. Thank you! We can only imagine a glimpse of that glorious day ahead.
This was the entrance hymn at my first Mass after ordination to the priesthood in 2007 as . I've indicated it is to be the entrance hymn at my funeral as well.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (June 29, St. Peter and St. Paul, Apostles), we sang this as our Closing Hymn. It is #660 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
Like all old agnostics, I question my lack of faith when I hear the most moving hymns. This is one of them and I remember, as a former chorister, being unable to sing it through my tears during a Good Friday service.
I am a very, very poor excuse for a Christian and a long lapsed Episcopalian, but when I hear hymns such as this one, I always choke up and remember that Christ died for me and all humankind. How can I doubt that magnanimity of Love and the grace He gave us all? I cannot and at the hour of my death, I hope and pray that He continues to bestow that forgiveness on me, unworthy as I am. Lift High the Cross, INDEED!
The principle at my high school just passed away and this was his favorite hymn. We sang this at the funeral as his casket was carried out, definitely a great hymn. RIP George Repass. We'll miss you

It's very fitting that it's the Irish cross that's featured in this video. After the Roman Empire collapsed it was the Irish monks who made copies of the Gospels and founded monasteries across Europe. In doing so they spread the Word of God and saved civilization.

We've been blessed with so many truly great anthems for the church! But until you've sung THIS one - the Hymn Triumphant! - with a truly powerful pipe organ - backing up fifty or so well-chosen singers - a brace of instrumentalists - throw in a good congregation for filler... you simply don't know what the vocal worship of the Son of God IS! The morning before performance, I have to drop 10 mg of Escitalopram. Without THAT, I'd NEVER get through this magnificent paean to the deity. Breaks me down every time.
@@Bigbassdrum60 Hi, Ted. I'm not quite sure what you're saying. Just to be clear, I wasn't saying that only modern Baptist hymnals tend to exclude it. Rather it has become fairly difficult to find in most hymnals of any type today.
eternalhalloween1 - Yes, it sure was - and then we used it 2 weeks later when we had an institution ceremony for our new Daughters of the King Chapter. Love it!
Laura Bowman Hi Laura. Like many other liturgists, I finished Palm Sunday with it this year. It's a good hymn for the end of that mass, because it gives people hope after they have heard the intense sorrow of the Passion. It's one of those interesting hymns that can be used not only on Palm Sunday but for some of the Easter weeks. Funny side note. All the liturgists I know began Palm Sunday with a different hymn. However, we all ended it with 'Lift High the Cross.'
+John Birkhead I suppose you could use it on Easter Sunday. But as a liturgist, I have found that people usually prefer to hear "Jesus Christ Is Risen Today " On Easter Sunday as an opening hymn. But I certainly have used "Lift High the Cross" during the 6 weeks of Easter (as well as the last hymn on Palm Sunday). ,
I prayed for you, Jackson, when I read your comment this morning -- that God would draw near to your side and comfort you. (My son's name is Jackson as well.)
