  • How to make a Sun Lounger Chair. In this video I show how I made a fixed sun lounger chair to relax on on warm Summer days. The frame of the chair is made from 50 mm x 25mm (2 x 1inch) mild steel welded together. The timber slats are made from 75mm x 35mm (3 x 1.5 inch) white deal (poplar or pine) It would be better to use a wood like cedar or oak but with the price of wood at the moment I would probably have had to remortgage to buy it. The chairs will only be out in the open for the Summer / early Autumn (fall) months so the wood I used with 3 coats of stain should last well. The slats are screwed on so if they ever get damaged or need to be repainted it is easy to remove them.
    To get the angles and lengths for the chair I made a mock up with scrap timber and tested it to see if it was comfortable. I designed the chairs around me, that is why I did not show the angles or sizes as it may not suit everybody. If you are going to build your own I would suggest making a rough mock up and test the angles to suit you. I also choose not to have arm rests but you could easily add some or even a small drinks holder or table.
    To make the chairs I used.......
    Steel= One 7.5 Meter length of 50x 25mm per chair.
    Wood= Five 4.2 Meter lengths of 75 x 35mm per chair
    Screw hole caps: amzn.to/3vEU56s
    I have ordered some cushions for the chairs but at the time I didn't realise they were being shipped from China so I wont have them for a few weeks so that is why there is none in the video.
    I hope you enjoy watching the video and have a go making your own.
