Does the TV series ever actually state what the difference is between a tank and tender engine? It could be that someone unfamiliar with railroading just assumed it was a synonym for steam engine.
Baldwin’s voice for James of Season 5 was too deep to be girl’s voice. But then again, I’ve seen some women with deep voices. Shohreh Aghadashloo is one of them. She was the voice of Queen Janna in the Disney Jr. series; The Lion Guard. And she was the voice of Queen Forouzan of the newest Kung Fu Panda series; The Dragon Knight.
James doesn't even _have_ wrists and I can fucking HEAR the limp wrist in his voice. The funniest part is, out of the original Engines, I'd argue James is the most likely to be Bi or Pan.

I always read James as kinda fem as a kid. Even though he has a boy’s name, his red coat and his slender look compared to the other big engines Henry and Gordon made him seem kinda… girly?… to me. Doesn’t help he sounded ultra feminine in Magic Railroad. Maybe it was projection on my part as a queer person growing up, hard to say, but I always identified with that side of him even though I was too young to consciously realise at the time.
I dunno, in terms of design, I don't really see James or any of the other engines as masculine or feminine. To me, they're just steam locomotives who happen to have faces. Steam engines aren't masculine or feminine to me, besides, I like them better than people anyways. Sorry, I'm a train nerd, as are probably the majority of Thomas fans. If you're interested, there is a video essay by The Unlucky Tug about how director David Mitton used several tricks to make these model trains with faces look as big and lifelike as possible!

They are machines first and foremost. I was just saying how I always subjectively read James as feminine growing up but in retrospect I think it was mostly projection, still it’s always fun to imagine these characters in a different light. As for Unlucky Tug, I’ve been a fan of his for a while, even before his original channel was terminated (RIP)
