ATC Cessna Citation M2 and XLS Raleigh-Durham and Chicago Midway Landing and Takeoff

- This is the ATC from vlog 153. It's a two day trip flying two very different airplanes. One was a single pilot light jet with advanced avionics and the other was an older midsize Citation business jet. The plan was for me to fly the Cessna Citation M2, a single pilot private jet, to the Raleigh-Durham International airport for a pick up and be back in St Louis in time to fly the Citation XLS to the Chicago Midway airport. I would fly the Citation XLS back the next day. Unfortunately, the return time was an hour before the XLS flight. So, just to be on the safe side, I arranged for a part-time captain to be ready to fly the trip if it looked like I wouldn't be back in time for departure. I was really glad I had setup a contingency plan because as soon as I checked on with Saint Louis approach, the controller handed off the XLS to Chicago center. I had missed the connection by 45 minutes. Fortunately, as a precaution, I had already purchased an airline ticket to the Chicago Midway airport. As soon as I shut down I secured he aircraft and jumped in my car getting to the St Louis airport in time to catch my Southwest Airlines flight to Chicago. The other Captain
had to fly the next day so he was flying back on the Airlines later that evening. I made it to Chicago, checked into the hotel and was ready for the return flight the next afternoon. This video is that two day trip with ATC, cockpit views and takeoffs and landings. Enjoy and safe travels.

Awesome video! I love at 28:50 complaining about not being able to go to FL400!!! HA HA HA HA!!! being a virtual pilot and watching you guys. I've learned a lot and on VATSIM if I haven't had that I wouldn't of understood at all what you guys where doing in every phase of flight. Well if I had known you were flying into RDU I would've baked a cake...lol.. By the looks of Lake Jordan (No,it wasn't named after Michael Jordan...lol) being about dried up,you must have filmed about three weeks ago. My place was just of your port side as you lined up on the outer marker (?)@ the 14.00 min mark. Lot's of changes here in the last 30 or so years. Pilots use to describe RDU as being hidden in the pine trees.... I miss working at RDU,...sometimes.. kinda......
Well, at Midway is nice...It started up to rain here in Chicago again.. It was not raining this morning but now in the afternoon it is raining. We have had rain for a few days now...Crazy winter here in Chicago...

So, couple of questions for you, Jim. First, what were you following into Raleigh-Durham? I heard U90 or U190, and I don't know what that is. He must not have been that fast if they had you reducing speed like they did.
When you're flying with a copilot, or as a copilot, when do you switch on the Autopilot? It looked like Mike was through 12,000' before he switched it on. On the other hand, when you're flying the Mustang, do you switch it on earlier? I realize that single pilot in the Flight Levels, you really want, and need, to be on Autopilot, but I also know of pilots who below, say 10,000' want to be in control of the airplane.
How do you like the Garmin G3000 in the Mustang, specifically the touch controllers?

Hi Gary. I think we were following a regional jet but, I don't know which airline it was. in the single pilot jets the autopilot is your copilot so it's normal to get it on early and shift the work load to the autopilot. I love the Garmin 3000. the touch pads took a little getting used to but, I love the system. We normally have the autopilot on by 3,000 but that's more of the flying pilots choice dependent upon how much he wants to fly. It's always on by the time we get to the flight levels.
I believe he was following an American Airlines Embraer 190.

1:20 That taxi speed looks really fast, do you remember how many knots you where howling down the taxi-way? :D Is that a normal taxi speed for that kind of aircraft?
Since I have not flown in 16 years and don't remember to much,I wanted to ask does the autopilot control throttle in these new jets and when you're descending from waypoint and have to be at a certain altitude at a certain time does the computer calculate that rate of descent for you?Thanks Capt.
the FMS will calculate the rate of descent but we have to manually operate the throttles.
Crazy Two Days! The demands & uncertainties that a job such as yours has must be met head on with much planning and anticipation; flexibility is definitely a requirement that may or may not be fully understood as part of the job description when Applying! Lol. Q - What's the reason for disengaging the yaw damper before landing?
the yaw damper controls the rudder in flight to counter dutch roll tendencies. If you don't disengage it before touch down, you're fighting the yaw damper as you try to move the rudder and nose wheel steering.

Apparently there was a Beechcraft bonanza that lost power and went down just short on his approach to spirit of St. Louis airport. I would like to know your opinion if you know anything about it and the safety of GA in general. I do believe that the single occupant (the pilot) was fatally wounded).
I don't have any information on it and the accident report hasn't come out yet but, I'm guessing it was fuel starvation.

It occurred to me while watching this video that the FAA could clean up ATC comms by simply no longer requiring US registered A.C to say November as part of the call sign, any non US based A./C and of course the Airlines with their codes. What o you think? Nice interesting video. So you file for FL400 and they only give you FL240, what does that do you you fuel pans and has it ever effected you by forcing unplanned landing for Fuel? Or if you were demeaning could you get them to give you FL400 if really needed?
they don't require it but, I've found from experience that if I check in and don't use it controllers will think I'm abbreviating a longer call sign.
