The Makalu Disaster

- In the Spring Himalayan climbing season of 2019, several teams of mountaineers would capitalize on a small favorable weather window to reach the summit of Makalu. Unfortunately, not all who set out for the summit that Spring would return home with their lives intact.

In terms of difficulty & danger, I’ve always considered Makalu to be, arguably, one the world’s most underrated peaks. She was the very last of the non Karakoram 8000ers to be topped in winter - for very good reason. Even for the most elite high altitude climbers, death’s a near certainty if one underestimates this mountain.
reaching makalu base camp in climbing season is it’s self another challenge.there are no tea houses along the way and very very grueling walk just to reach its base camp
Having done Makalu yesterday before breakfast I can confirm it’s bloody hard work
I did it before I jerked off in the morning. I did it in my underwear. It was moderate
😂😂😂
That one bloody hill , how every mountain has a disaster?
Hilarious!🤣🤣🤣.
How come I didnt see you then?
I learn from these. I am an armchair mountaineer, and really enjoy the presentation. One thing that would help us that are not well versed woukd, if possible, to show the route or make sure the view we see is labeled as the face they were attempting.
So sad for the Sherpa who recognised his limit, made the tough but correct decision to turn back, made it to safety and then died anyway. R.I.P sir.
I love how you narrate disaster mountain videos. Some people try to turn into like a story with too much unnecessary detail I like that you're very clear and concise and don't try to pour me with filler words, so I think you're awesome. Thank you.
There's not too many channels I hit the like before the video but yours are always one of them. Great work!
@Morbid Midnight Another perfect video. Just wow ! Love All of your content, especially the videos about mountaineering. But again, all are simply awesome and perfect. Please never change your style! You're the best! Thanks.
Agreed buddy. I enjoy his mountaineering videos immensely. Well researched and respectful.
The best part of the docs on this channel is the music. Very atmospheric. I feel certain that this Indian climber would have spoken out about any searches for his body, especially since another Sherpa died trying to carry it out. To me, that's the saddest part.
Don't pay attention to the haters, I think your narration for these videos is spectacular!
Jeeze, I’m no hater. But with loyals like you to call me one, he doesn’t need my subscription anyway. Thanks
@@Sushi2735 Hmmmm, I didn't mention your name, but apparently you heard "hater" and thought I must be talking about you.
@@Sushi2735someone’s tetchy
What’s wrong with the narration?
@@LotsofLisa. Nothing wrong with the narration!! People being picky over nothing!!
That’s why I love your content you always manage to resurrect the TRUE dangerous peaks I believe you made the Ogre mountain video only the best in the world can do it and they need to be dual hatted a rarity at best .
Wow. I have suffered altitude sickness and exposure. Both lead one take irrational descisions, very dangerous to a brave man.
Your content is amazing , you have educated so many people about parts of the world they would not know or never see keep up the good work
I absolutely love listening to your videos. Your voice helps to relax me as I trudge thru long security shifts. Please dont ever change a thing!
Makalu’s pyramid shape always intimidated me. Great vid as always MorbidMidnight!
sissssyyy
@@FatRescueSwimmer04just because I’m intimidated doesn’t mean I won’t try 😉
Hi morbid!!
Thank you for your videos. I watch them to help me go to sleep when I’m having trouble doing so. You’re very talented with your video essays and your style is really good!! Keep it up. You’re awesome dude. 🍁✨
Well done on this one MM! Keep up the great work and ignore critics. Your videos are fantastic.
"They travelled... at a glacial pace..."
Very creepy looking mountain
Thanks for the content.
Makalu. Wow. Thankyou. Peace.
excellent content
Quick question 🙋♂️ Are you aware a man on the Hindenburg only boarded because he was to be married. He had to be convinced of its safety. If I’m not mistaken HE SURVIVED and the man who spoke of its safety ironically perished. Thought air disasters would eventually make it to your channel. Honnold movie bought mountaineering into focus for me. You enhanced it 10 fold
I'm going to be on this channel one day!
lol
You gonna climb a mountain?
As a success or a statistic?!!🫤🤔🫢. Well, best of luck.
@@evryhndlestakn 99.9% as a statistic lmao
@@FatRescueSwimmer04Thats something to aspire to, I guess😂. Unless the mountain comes to Muhammed then it's still going to be an uphill battle.😉
If you did it right & saved for a while you could hire a team of sherpas, get them to carry you up.......& throw you off. Don't even have to raise a sweat.
Excellent video!
Beautiful mountain
Edit: Seems like the descent is usually what gets 'em
When you get a summit fever and continue up long after you should have turned down, it's a question if it was the descent which killed you or the decision you made on the ascent. Or maybe lack of oxygen which compromised your thinking.
The mountaineers from my country - (former) Czechoslovakia, made two attempts in 1970s. In the first one (unsuccesfull) they lost a man due to an accident on the way up, in the second (succesfull) they lost a man on the way down. So the had it 50:50, but I am not sure how it is with the overall score of this mountain.
Czechoslovaks in 1970s chose to try a new route (I think only them climbed it, no-one before them or after). Their first expedition in 1973 didn't reach the summit but lost a member in the attempt. They returned three years later, this time succesfully climbing it but from two men who made it up only one made it down. Years later some other climber who partialy crossed their route found him frozen. Says something about the mountain, I think.
Just want to say your channel was an inspiration for me to start the one I'm posting here now on.
Makalu may be the most dangerous 8000er but distaghil sar, a 7885 meter peak beats makalu, the last ascent was in 2005 via the north ridge
And theres another peak thats 2x harder than the ones i have mentioned, it's called Gyala peri
63k!!!!!!!
We made it bro!!!!!!!!!!!!
Starting to descend at 4pm seems to generally be a death sentence on the 8000ers
Nice narrative
That is such a shame like so many and I’ve been there and don’t understand why they do that
It's very strange and weird of you to think that the midnight is morbid.
Strange AND weird?! Whoa… that’s shocking and surprising.
@@Plemmy7 It's all of them at the same time.

Thank you from Canada!!!!! Prime Minister brother killed in avalanche....... Check it out would be a good story for you.
For the algorithm 👊
...glean light...? Do you mean 'shed light'?
Personally i love the narrative
Why would the high camp be located in the death zone? 💀
probably because the death zone big u need a place to camp for the next days accent
@@AlexanderSimicbecause they liked sucking each others dicks with no oxygen. It’s hot
I like your honest comment about how you really feel about these mountaineers, causing some respect I find some of these mountain climbers to think that they are above rules or don't think things like death applies to them and have some don't mind leaving their friends, partners or guides to die as long as they reach the top How can you brag about that once you've stepped over the dead bodies of your compadres maybe not this video cause I haven't watched it yet, but I kinda understand your sentiment
Also, I just kind of Got your comment lol Maybe this is like some weird mountain erotic, asphyxiation gameplay.
why cant i sleep
I would turn around if I felt ill or very tired.
Would you? Oh. Ok.
I think they tend to go on & push themselves too far because its not a "pop round the corner" type thing. They probably know they should but it could be years before they get the opportunity again. Yup, better that than losing their life, yada yada. Anybody attempting that type of thing has to know they are risking their life, even on a good day.
"Glean light"? - glean means to collect so "to collect light" makes to sense.
... YOU said "planet" lol
Your voice mesmerizes me.
Great content but sounds like your falling asleep dude
It doesn't matter how experienced you are. It's just not worth your life to climb
It doesn't matter how experienced you are , its not worth your life stepping out your front door.. Lol don't be a snizz
:O
Dang & I thought that people found North America’s fifth highest mountain to be one of the most feared mountains.
Enjoy your channel, however, you probably don’t notice, but your voice gets more AND more dramatic with each video. You are good on your own, don’t need the heavy inflection. 💕
Wake up! I've listen to several of your videos and they are great. But this one literally sounds like you're bord and sleepy.
Great video, except it's pronounced MOCK-a-loo with the emphasis on the first syllable.
Could you sound less interested?
I’m going to have to nitpick (some smooth brain says I can’t) because I do like your work, it is very good, but often you get pronunciations wrong. In mountaineering videos especially.:/
Anyway, it’s Mak-ah-lu, not ma-kalu.
Chill
If you hate to be a nitpick don’t be one!
@@SSEi02 Edited. You’re welcome
@@NicolaiAwesome 👍
Pretty sure it's pronounced Mockaloo.
There is literally zero reason for humans to climb these mountains….zero. If you die climbing a mountain, you died for nothing….literally nothing
Your narration killed most of them.
