    This is the Fifty Fifth in several episodes discussing the things i've learned from Barry Harris I started studying with Barry in 1993 and still learn from his teaching every day. I hope I can use this channel to help other musicians who are interested in Jazz but find it a little too cerebral. I think Barry's method, while being cerebral, is also direct and most important beautiful. Please Subscribe and feel free to comment below on how I can improve this channel I'm available for skype lessons if you prefer. Email me at chrisparksjazz22@gmail.com

    I used Barry’s major and dominant 6th diminished scales to build a chord melody of, “if you’re happy and you know it clap your hands” for my one year old. It’s even got 2 diminished chords in there and it sounds great

    I come from a 80's era hard rock & blues rock background. So for most of my playing stems from basic major scale harmony. I find Barry's method incredibly challenging; but in a good way...an inspiring way. Thanks again, Chris!

    Thank you for posting this. You know, I have been working on Barry Harris' Method on my own, following videos and reading books about it. I was working on this song too, a few months ago (Dec 2019) and I wrote an arrangement. I just found your video in Feb 2020, and I found that I arrived to the exact same voicings you have here. Thank you for posting!!!!

    I’ve just about got my drop 2s down but drop 3s and drop2&4s is feeling like a mountain!

  • @jesmarcamiloloaizalagos9946

    Thanks for all of this information man! One of the things I've noticed about Barry Harris is his amazing ear, could you make a video about it? like how is his approach to ear training. Greetings from Colombia.

      @thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616  Před 4 lety +2

      True, Barry has an amazing ear. He doesn't have perfect pitch. I think more important though is his sense of taste. I've seen people with better ears than Barry in terms of how quickly they can get a phrase but I've never seen anyone with a better sense of Beauty and Rhythm. I think these qualities are under appreciated.

    Another great lesson! Thank you so much!
    Just an idea for a video- does Barry talk specifically about ideas for 16th note phrases? I’ve seen you cut loose a few on here. It haven’t gotten around to breaking them down. I’m curious what you’re thinking, ie do you use the same rules for half steps, pivots, etc?

    Hey Chris. For measures 9 and 10 of Alone Together, would Barry think of bar 9 (Bm7 to E7) as running G major from the maj7 down to the 3rd of E....and bar 10 (Gm7 to C7) as running Tonic of C7 up to 7th of C7? Thanks for doing what you do.

    First of all I hope you are fine.
    I have a big thank you to give you.
    I started with the recommendation given in video 1 and I must say that after practicing again and agin I finally got it. Yes it helps hearing the chords changes and it helped me a lot in y improvisation in all keys for jazz blues. I have been playing for a long time but could never play without having to read a chord sheet. Now I can Big thank you. I am now starting the 5432 work and it will keep me busy for some time. Considering I am stuck at home, I have no excuse ! While I understand the theory under the minor 6th diminished chord it is a bit complicated for me for the fingering (got short hands and the first chord is a challenge). Now some questions. Would the scale theory apply to songs like 'girl from ipanema' ? Could you make a video with 2 or 3 songs which are not strait jazz blues ? Take care ... Hibou

    Hello thanx for your sharing it's help a lot. In the barry 's system of 4 dominants, Chords are they "interchangeable" for instance can i play in the key of gmaj7 : Gmaj7 | Ab diminished | Eb min6 | D7 | Gmaj7 thanx

      @clemchratieur7861 Před 4 lety +1

      In a 2-5-1 i understood that it was possible to use instead of D7: Ab 7, B7, F7 but with the same idea you can substitute the Am with another 2 for example: Eb m6, Cm6 ? Do you accept any student yet?

    • @thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616
      @thingsivelearnedfrombarryh2616  Před 4 lety

      @@clemchratieur7861 Yes. You can substitute those minor 6 also. Yes I do take students. Just email me.
