In India it is a rule by the government to display MRP or Maximum Retail Price. You can challenge if someone asks more than that. Such guys spoiling our Country's reputation. Tourists to be fairly treated.
To be fair, I travelled in India in the 1980s and most vendors tried to scam foreigners that we encountered. Luckily we had an Indian guide who put an end to their attempts. Having said that, we had the most generous Sikh taxi driver would refused to overcharge us and even refused to take a tip. Not a common occurrence anymore. Will never forget him.

Please don't be too generous when spending money in India. Everything has been dealt with a smile here but it is a serious issue. Don't buy stuff for anyone just because they are on the streets. And always check MRP on packed products. Never feel guilty when paying exactly as printed. It stands for MAXIMUM retail price. You have the right to bargain and negotiate for a lower price. So giving more than MRP encourages these vendors to keep charging higher from everyone unreasonably. Many of these shops, carts, vendors, etc show that they are struggling and innocent but they never miss an opportunity to earn an unfair extra buck. No need to be super kind to anyone. Consumers like me have been fighting for consumer rights even if there is Re1 discrepancy. Still fighting through consumer forums. And it is not an easy battle. Our ancestors have seen tough times financially. It bothers me when I see people getting duped because of their generosity\kindness. As a tourist you have no reason to feel obligated to please every random person on the street by spending your money. Don't feel guilty just because you are a white tourist from US\Europe\West. Wish you safe and joyous travel.

If he feels like being nice and giving out things, let him do so. Whatever God exists in the end would surely be happy to see that in him as a giving person. If the people are scamming him, they will pay for it in the end with the said God. Simple enough. Do good deeds on earth, all that matters.

MSRP or MRP does not stand for MAXIUM retail price. It stands for Manufacturers Retail Price or Manufacturers Sale Retail Price.

It’s just dishonest and greedy pricing just because he is a foreigner. Earning money in 3rd world countries is very tough. They guy was just trying to make a few extra rupees off of the rich foreigner. It’s not a scam. The dude wasn’t tricked or forced into buying a slightly over priced ice cream. He can say no, and move on if he wants to.

its almost everywhere even in my country phillippines the price changes instantly when foreigner tries to buy, get to know locals and make friends so you wont be fooled.
Most products, especially the packaged ones have MRP, max retail price. One can't sell any item above its MRP. So pls check for the MRP label and the expiry date. Only exception is when order bottled drinking water in a restaurant, they can charge you more

I am a local but I have been scammed by drivers and vegetable vendors so many times I dont even care anymore, but it is way less here in nagaland you should come here it's beautiful

It`s an easy scam to fix, the ice cream will have the government agreed price on the label. Simply read it and give the vendor the exact price with a smile.

Before buying, please check the rate/maximum retail price (MRP) on it then only buy because they demand more money and threaten U if U don't buy too. Also please don't give money to someone who helps U as we consider everyone in the world as our brother and sister. The lady who helped U considered U as a brother and helped U.
