Answer to your question about the later designed control valve spool having flats: The flats allow the valve to reseat at a system pressure much closer to the opening pressure determined by the spring. It has to do with the area of the valve exposed to system pressure when it is closed vs when it is open and exposed to the dynamic pressure of the flowing hydraulic fluid. The flats minimize the area difference between the seated and open conditions and allow the reseat pressure to be much closer to the cracking pressure.

The work you have done has given me my fix for now. I for one will be waiting until you have the time to devote to x231, some time in the future. X231 is a very worthy project. Thank you for taking it on.

To rescue the old girl is work enough, a tractor as rare as this deserves a dignified retirement to be gently driven, looked at and the occasional gentle stroking would not go astray. I have a very old brough superior motorcycle tha is rideable but, it goes to shows on a trailer, and sometimes gently ridden around the display fields.
so I know what you are about with this lovely old girl.

I used it for a lot of things but my engine were all Gen sets in a power room and there it was priceless (as well as a coating for shafts on seals that saw cold starts, not common but some were up on the North Slope and there any lube on a new build would rip out a seal on start)

Love this series, I have only been watching it since you finished the D2, but someday I want to go back to the beginning. I grew up with Olivers, but Dad had a MM model E corn sheller with a stationary 4 cyl. MM engine on it. It had a magnito, and electric start, but we still used the crank quite often when we didn't have a spare battery. Battery or crank, it rarely failed to start. When the sheller wore out we sold the engine to the Amish because it didn't need a battery to start or run.

The copper ring on the valve plug would make no problem if you fit a spacer into the plug that brings the spring back to the same pre-tension...but the ring would be visible from the outside and won't look OEM...
I fully agree with the usage of this vehicle, you can't simply risk breaking something unique when there is no spare around, being a trailer queen is completly acceptable...
    Thx for showing!

If you wanted to use that copper crush ring to seal that plug you'd just need to drop a shim in the cap that's the same thickness as the copper ring.. That would keep the spring load the same and get you a good seal.

Shades of the story of the guy driving a fleet Cummins 6 (N400 type) our instructor told of us about. The guy had his own injector pump with hot pressure setup to boost it well past allowed (he acualy bought his own and they ain't cheap ). Tip of the week: When you have to bring a snap ring over another snap ring groove that it might slip into and become very difficult to extract, FIRST find an O ring in your assortment kit to place into the groove you need to pass over. Been there, done that.. There was a compressor part I used to have to rebuild that had that same problem with multiple snap ring grooves.. Filling the empty groove with a correct size Oring ended all the frustration forever.

@@squatch253 Getting this thing to operational but not work condition is, itself, a triumph. 231 was never meant for a life of work - it was meant to be a one-of-a-kind testbed. It's incredible that it's survived in any condition given the life to which it was subjected.
I've said it before - with the standard of restoration you are doing, I would hope that one day these would end up in a high-class industrial museum, like the Ford museum in Detroit. The two prototypes (231, 253), especially with the documentary evidence you have collected, the videos and photos you've taken, etc, are unique examples of America's industrial past.
