Finally someone put a Tortoise shell pickguard on it!
I picked one up just after Christmas and have barely put it down sense. I own a fender American P bass and the quality is pretty much on par. One of the best necks I have ever played and it’s ridiculously versatile.
Wow what a compliment. This thing is significantly better than most Fender Imports I’ve played, but to throw out the American name there is awesome haha. Thanks for checking out the video!
I just picked another one up for like 320 with an upgraded bridge, rosewood board, and a lollar pup in the neck. Absolutely insane how fantastic these are.
Dang dude. Did you like rob the guy, then decide to give him a little something for his troubles?
The Mascis was discontinued at the end of 2021 due to Fender shutting down the Artist Series program for Squier. You can still find some new in stores, but you better hurry!
Was there a news article or update on Fender's site about this?
They brought it back, but there are changes. Satin finish (almost raw) for the neck and headstock, and indian laurel fretboard instead of rosewood.
@@blastofo yea im gonna stick with my 2017 jmjm haha
@@imdaroger I play mine more than my $2000 les paul. It's the best guitar for the money in my opinion.
“Everyone deserves one.” Damn right
Just ordered used after paying one in person. $355 shipped. I agree , great neck. I could not believe it. Can't wait.
Awe man what a deal! Thanks for checking out the video.
I picked one with a hard case for 400.00 bucks and just love the way it plays. One fine guitar.
Man that sounds like quite the deal!
I purchased a Squire Jazzmaster deluxe ST 4 months ago, I also bought a new Marshall DSL 40,, this is the finest guitar I have owned period. It blows away most core models . Plugged into the DSL40 or even a fender tube super reverb, this combination is the golden nugget.
I like the tortoise guard, and black looks good too, but I believe when you do that, it changes the tone, as the anodized stock pickguard is an ingredient in the tone recipe. Wether it changes it for better or worse I don't know though.
Glad you like the guitar, hope it also influenced you to check out Dinosaur Jr and get some inspired on J's unique style
I haven’t checked them out actually, but I’ll have to give them a listen since you recommend!
I picked one up new and it punches far above its weight! That neck is fantastic and the stock hardware and electronics aren’t bad. It’s a super solid mod platform too. Takes some effort but it’s worth it! Killer review man!
Yeah man, I totally agree! I’m hoping to upgrade my pickups and trem soon. Thanks for checking out the video!
Love this guitar. Fat neck is good for my big hands. Pickups really don't feedback either, and you would expect that from Jazzmaster single coils.
Thanks for checking out the video! Yeah man, this thing is killer for sure.
Justin, great video. I am thinking about picking up one of the new ones. However, I'm not a fan of the gold pick guard. I noticed you switched out the gold for the tortoise shell which is what I would likely do. I have been reading that since the gold pick guard is anodized, once switched out, there is a significant level of hum/noise that is introduced. Did you experience that when you switched the pick guard out or did you do something special to cut the noise out? Thanks!
I want to know this too, hope he answers
i want to to know that too.
Thanks a lot for the review, I think you sold me on this as my next main guitar! How did you go about finding the red pickguard?
It’s a great guitar for sure! If I remember correctly I found this one on Amazon. I just looked up “red tortoise shell jazzmaster pickguard” and made sure all of the holes seemed to line up haha. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@JustinTutor Appreciate it bro!
I’m no fan of J Mascis, but the J Mascis Jazzmaster is a great guitar. I like it even better than my AVRI.
I’ve never really listened to him to be honest lol. It is a great guitar though, no doubt.
Why not a fan of him?
@@justintmars Most people don't know about him. He's really underground but a cool guy none the less.
"I'm no fan of J Mascis" Why are you writing that like you deserve a medal?
@@JustinTutor Dude, you're on YT. It would literally take a minute of your time.
do you have the link for the pickguard?
Only thing that feels off is the vibrato is closer to the bridge on the j mascis model rather than the usual spot but the tune o matic bridge is a awesome upgrade to the design
I’m looking for a new electric for worship. This might be the one! Thanks for posting the update.
I use mine on Sunday mornings all the time! Thanks for checking out the video!
@@JustinTutor Ok, that’s another reason for me to one!
Clean amp setting + reverb + both pickups on = Heavenly tones
Whoa I did NOT expect that crunch at 3:36
Naw yee didn't. Didn't no one
I read somewhere that Fender designed it to be really comfortable to play in the seated position, because a lot of jazz players play seated, is that something you have found?
Actually, that may be my one criticism about this guitar. It’s definitely comfortable to play while seated, but it feels like it tends to slide off my leg more than other guitars I’ve played. Not sure why that is. It’s not a huge deal though.
@@JustinTutor Thanks' for the reply, well that's too funny, I guess Leo didn't get it quite right in that aspect.
I love the pickguard, where did you find it?
Hello mate great video! Just bought on myself and was wondering where you got your replacement guard from? Thats exqctly the guard i want for mine! Thanks
Getting one delivered from Sweetwater today🤘
Awe man, enjoy that! I love mine. Thanks for checking out the video!
been debating wether or not i should buy this, but it sounds great!! think im gonna do it
Thanks for checking out the video, Lisa! I definitely highly recommend the guitar!
Where can i get a pickguard like that for my jazzmaster?
sounds killer. how do you get that sound?
it's now on reverb for 915$ plus 225$ for shipping to Canada. lol crazy stuff. they should be in better colours.
so bummed that they are not available anymore. which current guitar comes closest to this?
I have a 2021 jm jm. It cost 499 plus tax so about 530 bucks. Neck shape is like a late 50s profile. I like thicker hand filling necks. It is the best squier and these are upsold privately and now they are no longer in production. What is in stock at stores is all that is left, fender will no longer produce any j mascis jazzmasters. I have lowered my action and adjusted the pickup heights and put some foam under the strings on the vibrato. I don't use the wiggle stick and play mostly metal so the signature jazzmaster jangle had to be stopped somewhat with the foam. It came with 10s on it but i am about to change the strings. I play 9s on everything so it might need slight adjustments but all should be fine. My guitar has some cool figuring in the face of the headstock and a little in the fretboard. Weighs a good 8 or 9 pounds too which i prefer heavy guitars anyways.
Oh wow I didn’t know they weren’t in production any longer! They’re definitely great guitars, and I use mine for metal pretty often too! Thanks for checking out the video, Chris!
They're available on preorder for August 2023 in the UK..
Wow yours looks really more whitish without that yellowness. Repainted or its just the light messing with me?
Really like how it looks with this pickguard, ordered myself one. Also im considering to change from poly finish to nitro on mine, that would be really cool as well
It may just contrast against the red more so than the gold. Could also be the color correction I did on the video though haha. Thanks for checking out the video!
Depends on the year you bought it. The older ones are more yellowy the new ones are closer to white. There are other slight differences from the older and newer ones (changed factories of production) but regardless the quality remains.
Cool maybe I’ll get one
I highly recommend it! Thank you for checking out the video
Great review! What brand pickup guard are you using?
Thanks for checking out the video! Dude, I just checked my Amazon order to get the brand name for you, and there literally is no brand name haha. It was seriously just one of the cheapest ones I could find on Amazon, and I have no complaints about it!
Theres a jmascis that has p90 pickups, does that one have jm pickups or p90?
Todays Squier nothing like the old ones. Let the haters spend too much. We all know some of them cant play.
Hi nice video! Just bought one of these but would like to switch out the pick guard to tortoise shell like you did. Does any Jazzmaster pick guard work or did you have to get a specific model?
Hey thanks for checking out the video! I just bought one off of Amazon. I just made sure that it had the proper cut outs for the different switches on the guitar.
@@JustinTutor great thanks
There is one for sale at a pawn shop where I live for $435. Any thoughts from you guys on the price? The guitar looks mint.
I think that’s a fair price for sure! I mean you MAY be able to find one for a better price, but I think it’s pretty unlikely at this point. I’d give $435 for mine any day of the week.
Good price.. given reverb prices are now $600 plus
I'm thinking about switching the pickups for some Lambertones Cremas or Ristrettos, but I don't know yet which to choose.
I just sold a guitar that had a set of Cremas in it! I really loved those, but from what I’ve heard from other players I think the Ristrettos may be a little more what I’m looking for. From what I understand they’re just a bit more “aggressive sounding,” whatever the heck that means haha.
@@JustinTutor do you think the Cremas could sound good on the J Mascis Jazzmaster?
@@AndyFerdean oh absolutely. You could put those Cremas in a 2 x 4 and they’d sound incredible 😂
Just my opinion and taste, but unless you're dissatisfied with the tone, you may not want to. The J. Mascis pickups are unique to this Jazzmaster model and are closer to a P90 design. You'll end up with a different tone altogether if you "upgrade". As for mine, I do plan on upgrading the wiring and switches, but the stock pickups are so harmonically interesting to my ears.. that I'll never swap 'em out.
@@randyk1919 yeah, I do also love the K Mascis pick-ups. But I thought Lambertones would be an upgrade, but it's hard to know until I try them. Anyway I'm gonna think twice if I'll do it now :)
Does the guitar sound different to you after changing the pickguard?
No it doesn’t sound different at all, but I will say this particular pickguard doesn’t fit with some of the electronics as well as the original one. I think my pickguard is just thicker than the gold one it comes with.
Just got one
How you liking it so far?
Hey man, where’d you get that pickguard? I’d love to get one
Amazon actually haha! Just looked up “jazzmaster tortoise shell pickguard,” and found a cool one. It was only like $20 too. Thanks for checking out the video!
would a guitar like this work well with shoegaze / grungegaze?
You just introduced me to a new genre of music and it’s awesome! Lol. Yeah! I could totally see someone using one of these in that style!
@@JustinTutor sweet! great to hear! I plan on getting a new 6 string and this one looks tough to beat, great video
Glad I can introduce you to some gold ol gaze. I recommend soul blind, title fight, superheaven, and balance and composure to start off. Please let me know what you think
@@veil2612 oh man, I love Balance and Composure! I just always referred to them as “rainy day music” though 😂
@@JustinTutor agreed but depends on the album for me. Some of them are super happy vibes and others super depressive imo
Prices on these just keep going up.
Confused how you bought a jmascis jag for clean/edge of breakup hahaha have you ever listened to jmascis (dinosaur Jr)
Like using a Les Paul for heavily distorted music? Have you ever listened to Les Paul and Mary Ford?
Your fretboard doesn't need to get wet with that snake-oil. You could leave it dry for the next 20 years and not have a problem. But getting it wet all the time like that? Yes, that *will* cause problems. The wood slightly expands each time. Think, McFly, think!
You said "church." I'm out.
We have a little badass over here, watch out everyone.
Boo!
No "upgrades" on mine. I leave my original distinctive PG on rather than downgrading to tortoise shell.
