Why Are Footballers Obsessed With Conspiracy Theories?

  • From Matthew Le Tissier claiming atrocities are hoaxes to Rickie Lambert believing that he can compliment water into tasting better and Iker Casillas denying the moon landings, there has been a sudden recent rise in the number of conspiratorial footballers.
    In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at why footballers appear to be so obsessed with conspiracy theories, what has caused the recent rise in craziness, and - regrettably - the existence of Joey Barton.

      My favourite memory of him is when he came up to Scotland expecting to boss the league, made 8 appearances where he was terrible in all of them and ran off back to England within 6 months, blaming the quality of the league for his failure.

      Without the attitude problem he would have been a lower Premiership/Championship midfielder and a footnote of the last 15 years following a respectable career.

    • @A-se2ur
      @A-se2ur Před 4 měsíci +16

      @southstandboy that’s being generous, to the point of falsehood. For a so called premier league player he was of average technical ability and only really especially proficient at running about and winding up opposition (and his own team). If Barton was not a complete wrongun narcissist with an ego almost as large as his voided skull, he would be in the long list of obscure footballers forgotten by all but the most hardcores. He never made his name for his football ability, nor for his insights either, but that’s a different matter.

    • @southstandboy
      @southstandboy Před 4 měsíci +5

      @@A-se2ur He did get in an England squad (although he only played 12 minutes) and enough clubs seemed to be happy to employ him. As I have heard in another video today he was something of a poor man's Roy Keane and he was just about in the era when you could be an enforcer.
      I agree he won't be remembered primarily for his football ability though.

    Plus, Alfie, I am still hoping to see a video about how Kazakhstan fuelled sportswashing worldwide. Its move from AFC to UEFA in 2002 has been cited as the 21st century's first sportswashing case given Kazakhstan's authoritarian and repressive methods against its own citizens, and UEFA's inability to address this matter proved fatal as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Russia and Azerbaijan took up the Kazakhstan playbook to do the same evil businesses as we see today. It's a working class sport. A lot of footballers have no academic qualifications and only a primary education, which isn't the only reason for falling for them, but more often than not it is this class of people who are more likely to fall for conspiracy theories. Outside of the time building their careers some are likely to fall prey to the sea of misinformation on social media. Influencers and popular podcast hosts like Joe Rogan have perpetuated lies in our modern day culture wars. Often hysterical and totally at odds with reality. I implore people to listen to Jon Ronson's new series of Spotify or BBC Sounds called Things Fell Apart and discover just how insane these conspiracies are and how they thrive and infect the community.

      @@MySamurai77 that is incorrect . A conspiracy is not about being true or false , it's a secret plan to gain power for example or to commit a terrorist act . Just because a terrorist act happens doesn't mean they weren't co spiring to commit the attack

    Is it not just a case (as you hint yourself) that a certain percentage of the population have fallen for these mad conspiracies and the numbers of footballers who have done likewise is probably statistically the same? Surely the government must keep tabs on the number of divies and their jobs, and can supply a thorough journalist, like yourself, with the appropriate stats? Well that's what the pigeon on my window sill thinks anyway....

    I don't think it's they are obsessed in general. There will be 600 players on the books of Premier League clubs alone. They are often idolised and whilst good at football often don't have a great education. So if one or two preaches conspiracy theories it's not unexpected due to the numbers, media attention and education.
