  • Warning: this video is not flashy. So just because it may get boring please don't hit the thumbs down button 😂 Everyone gets to see and hear me chop all the time but some of you may not know but I love to lock and play music. All styles of music. I want to be known for more than just Chops or the guy who played for Suicidal Tendencies. I have toured and played with many amazing artist. From Suicidal Tendencies to El Debarge , Sly Stone , New Edition, Bobby Brown, Lillake, O'bryan and so many other big names in music. I am a musician I can play it all and when it comes time to chop you know exactly there's no end to that.

Why would anyone that is a musician dislike this video, there's nothing more beautiful then having the control to continually play a groove without letting your brain get the best of it and going berserk with chops, this right here is what you should strive for, being able to groove like this is literally the pinnacle of what drumming is about, this is how you make a living, this is what producers want, the fact that at any given moment he could sink into a gospel lick and it be cleaner than anything you've ever heard while maintaining the groove but has the control to maintain his composure and just groove is amazing, for me this is hard to do without doing something I physically can't do, 15 seconds in to just playing, this is what it's about people

NICE!!!! Sometimes, all ya gotta do IS lay the groove in order to blow minds. As a drummer with lots of groove and pocket but a very limited bag of chops, I've been ragged on for not "doing anything" (usually from guys who like to do nothing but freekin' OVERPLAY ALL THE TIME when it's not necessary). However, as I've seen many of your vids, I totally appreciate the fact that you have a huge enough vocabulary of chops in that you know when to bust 'em out, but also know when to observe restraint and stick it in the pocket! And THAT is what I'd call FAR from "boring"!

My favorite thing about you is how much you genuinely love playing the drums and encouraging the drum community regardless of our skill level! I myself struggle with chops and admire what you can do and have learned a lot from you. I get great pocket comments a lot. I dont have the hands i used to have but always a pocket player. when i fill in the band/ singers often say how easy it was to sing or solo w/ my groove....pocket is what gets people to tap their feet, get up and dance even when they aren't dancers, its what makes a band have that special something that feels so good....this is great stuff thanks Eric, been watching your videos a lot you have some amazing chops and feel...

I promise this just hit me, sort of an epiphany: as a drummer playing in pocket is primary. It makes a world of difference when adding fills(simple or complex) when you always play in pocket. This video is a PERFECT example of when a drummer plays in pocket and adds simple fills, sounds so crisp always coming back on the one. RESPECT!

I was told by an old school rock drummer to practice the groove and no fills try it and see how hard it is just to keep it going .When you get into the pocket the drum sticks seem to sink and you feel the groove all the way thru your body all four limbs independent so sweet .

Back when I was an inexperienced drummer, Oh, I was TIGHT in the pocket, had BLING chops, and it was a gift. I'm in the studio with R. Kelly, but nobody gave me the memo that it was his song and HE was the star! I'm trying to impress the Boss, and he wasn't feeling me! I didn't get to finish the first song! Word got out about me, and after a few years of treading water, I learned a valuable lesson. I've been eating ever since that valuable lesson.

Your description made me smile because as a beginner drummer I'd be so proud of myself just to play what you consider "not flashy". We all gotta start somewhere right? Fantastic groove....compliments the music well.

Thank you for recording and posting this video. As a drummer myself and a fan of yours. It is great to hear that a legend such as yourself still believes in pocket. Most drummers in 'this day and time don't believe in that. It's either chops or nothing. Again Thank you.

Everyone who gets on this man's case for chopping out all the time needs to watch this video. One of the best pockets in the game for sure.

I enjoy playing (and hearing) a solid groove over chops any day. Awesome stuff!

When i'm at church I like to hear a lil chop here and there. Sometimes I just want to groove though. Love this video.

Particularly tight around the 4:30 mark.
    With some very nice touches.
That kind of stuff is worth more to me than all the fast stuff put together.
    Tight in the pocket stuff.
    Yet moving around the kit.
With clever and tastefully understated yet completely solid moves.
Just wonderful to watch that kind of playing.
I have to rewind it constantly.
You don’t know what to expect.
    And so I’m constantly surprised.
I remember someone writing about Stuart Copeland in some drum magazine years ago.
“You think you know what he’s going to play.
    Then he does something else”
    😂😂🙏

Flashy chops are impressive and exciting and all that, but THIS is music right here.

No Chops? Are you mad? There are some serious chops here. Beautiful drumming, so concise yet fluid.

all hits were on point, fills on point. going with the groove. Not all extra unnecessary fills "chops". Staying on count/tempo. Staying tight. Pocket and groove with right fills is all that matters in my book as a drummer. And what i look for. Its alot more fun and chill laid back. There is nothing to prove besides getting the jam on point with groovy feels.

I've never seen a drummer hit the same crash cymbal twice (once before the downbeat) the way this guy does... gives the cymbal more of a wash with that dynamic. Really cool
