Deventer is a city and municipality in the Salland historical region of the province of Overijssel, Netherlands. In 2020, Deventer had a population of 100,913. The city is largely situated on the east bank of the river IJssel, but it also has a small part of its territory on the west bank. In 2005 the municipality of Bathmen (with a population of about 5,000 people) was merged with Deventer as part of a national effort to reduce bureaucracy in the country.
What to see in one day in Deventer?
‱The Walstraat is a street in the Dutch city of Deventer. In the past, he followed the northeastern part of the city wall and the city wall. The street starts at Bergkerkplein and Prinsenplaats, at the foot of the Bergkerk, and runs to Keizerstraat. Side streets that lead to it are Damstraat and Golstraat. There are numerous restored old buildings in the street.
‱The Mountain Church or Saint Nicholas Church is a former place of worship in Deventer, Overijssel. This Romanesque basilica was built around 1209 and consecrated to Saint Nicholas. Centuries later it received some Late Gothic alterations. In 1580 the Dutch Reformed Church took the temple and renamed it the Mountain Church.
‱The Wilhemina Bridge is a bridge in Deventer in the province of Overijssel. It spans the IJssel and was a filming location for the film The Bridge of Arnhem (1977).
‱There is a Wilhelmina fountain on the Brink in Deventer. The monument was unveiled in 1898 on the occasion of the inauguration of Queen Wilhelmina. The monument was designed by the Deventer city architect J.A. Mulock Houwer. In 1893, a fountain had already been provided in honor of the completion of the Deventer water pipeline, but a lack of money forced the construction to be abandoned. In 1898 the opportunity arose to install a fountain. The monument - whose cast iron parts were cast at Nering Bögel - is based on these two ideas. Contrary to what the inscription on the pedestal (where Wilhelminafontein can be read) suggests, the monument contains no further references to the queen. The Stedenmaagd of Deventer, made by Wilhelmus Gerhardus van Poorten, stands on the pedestal. It features a laurel leaf and a shield on which the city coat of arms is printed.
‱The Deventer Town Hall (Dutch Stadhuis Deventer) is located on the Grote Kerkhof opposite the Lebuinus Church in Deventer. Today's town hall consists of buildings and parts of buildings from different times, so that different architectural styles are represented. The part with the facade from 1693 was included in the top 100 of the Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg in 1990.
‱The Great Church or St. Lebuinus Church is the main church building of the Dutch city of Deventer, Netherlands.
