I do part time security, armed 🚔 at a Orlando FL WaHo. 🧇 Fri Sat. Thus far, I've had 03 gun related incidents, 1 woman leaving her 2 toddler kids, infant in her car 🚗 for 30min. No adults, parents. I also had 2 WH customers have a domestic fight 🥊. Would I eat at Waffle House? Ummm no. WH is dirty, the staffs are inept, lazy. Gripe about tips.

@@DavidLLambertmobile let the diner beware - I've eaten at WH all of my life and some are run better than others - they are usually so small and simply laid out that it is readily apparent if the joint ain't run right - go somewhere else if it doesn't seem clean and organized and take into consideration the volume of business and time of day. I worked in all kinds of restaurants both high end and low end and these considerations are applicable across the board, period. Never ever worked with a wait staff that didn't complain about tips - it's part of the lifestyle. As far as the side show going on in the dining room and parking lot - hey, these places are often the only place open for miles around and tend to draw patrons from all walks of life - again if you don't feel comfortable for any reason, go somewhere else - simple as that.

In college, we’d frequently take study breaks at the Waffle House at I75 and Northside in Atlanta. There was a waitress named “Mama” who knew us and called us her “babies”. One night when we went there, she wasn’t there but a new waitress was. No one knew what happened to Mama. A year or so later, we were on Buford Hwy and decided to stop in a WH there and guess who was waitressing? Mama. She remembered us and started yelling at the cook, “These are my babies!”

Virginia, born and raised. Some of my best and.most cherished memories from my teen years (80s) was having breakfast any time,
day or night with my daddy at the WH. He loved that place and all the servers knew his name and his order. Pork chop dinner, hashbrowns scattered smothered, covered , chucked, peppered, slapped around , upside down( dad jokes, roll my eyes)
After daddy passed in 94 I never went there again. Until this year when I needed a job. Just walking in the door, the smell of coffee and waffles brought back bittersweet memories. Tasting the delicious, waffle house coffee blend was like a momentary gut punch of forgotten fewlings and associations but I am so happy to be on the other side of the counter now , helping make memories for other families.

It was in 1976 when I first had hashbrowns scattered and smothered. I was raised in Atlanta, and this was at a WH near my aunts (Clairmont and I-85, the store was torn down decades ago, and rebuilt across the interstate). The waitress knew us, and knew of my love for onions. She told me that some of the truckers that came in asked for their hashbrowns to be scattered (instead of in the ring) with onions grilled with them, and wanted to know if I would like to try them. I never had regular hashbrowns again.

I had clients across Atlanta during the 90s and when attending to business over there, I would stay in a hotel near Chamblee that was next to a Waffle House. Instead of offering a breakfast in the hotel, they provided a $10 voucher for Waffle House. After breakfast, I could drive to the nearby Marta station that had a huge parking lot and then take the train into Buckhead, downtown, Dunwoody or wherever I needed to go. I also became familiar to a couple of the waitresses.

I worked 2nd and 3rd. I had people passing several other WH stores just to come to mine. I took alot of pride in what I did and used to cook everything to perfection and made my presentation just like on the menu. We didn't do the silly condiment packet thing we had the orders called to us but I always just lined the tickets up because I've cooked alot of places and it just made more sense. 3rd shift was the best. Not gonna lie all the dealers came in and usually tipped me with bud or coke. Also there was always some crazy entertainment on 3rd, usually fights or just people drunk or drugged out of their mind.

Now I am the night manager and have quite a following of customers. I love this job and this company. One year one of my servers working with me on new years eve got a call that her house had caught fire. Destroyed the bed room and kitchen. She finished her shift. When I was a server there, every little thing was accounted for. Guy wanted eggs scrambled very light with cheese and onion? There's a mark for that. Want your waffle burnt to hell with pecans? I took my family to the Waffle House in Pigeon Forge TN and it was a hoot. My wife had the Pecan Waffle. My kid had the patty melt but when they saw i went with the fried eggs, bacon and covered, chunked scattered hash browns they all helped themselves to my plate. Ordered some grits and sausage gravy to offset the rest of my dinner/breakfast comfortably sitting in my family's belly. Part of the allure is the hands on approach to doing business.
There's no computers sitting around for the servers to use so that cooks have to watch for tickets to come in then decipher the "code" in small typeface.
I can appreciate the plate layout system but it's not for me personally.
Total Table Service instead of little "ordering" stations on each table....
Very low tech....no timers for food...the cooks actually know how long to cook a thing.
Unlike McDonalds where a buzzer tells a set of hands when to lift the fries. No "sitting" food...like McDonalds has food sitting in a slider window during busy times.
There's the burger...then all the stuff to put on it instead of ordering a set burger and having to say "NO" this or that.
I worked at a Huddle House which is very similar in structure. Loved it.

I was a waffle house cook for a little over a year. I generally worked overnight or early morning when the volume was *insane*. This was in like 2003. The benefits you mentioned were a scam and we never once saw a production bonus. Furthermore the few times customers tried to tip me, the manager said "tips are for the servers" and stole my money and gave it to them. When I protested, I was fired on the spot. If you really wanna eat cheap food that other humans had to be overworked and underpaid to provide, Waffle House is for you... also if you just wanna get into a fight for the fun of it, its good for that too.

All chain restaurants have their rough areas and their good areas. I visited Tucson a while back. There was a WH right next to the Holiday Inn Express I was staying at. It was one of the cleanest and most well-run chain restaurants I’ve ever seen with outstanding, long term employees. I was in chain restaurant operations for 25 years and know excellence when I see it. I ended up eating at least one meal there every day and by my second visit, I was recognized by name by their cook. For a restaurant that is open 24/7, their level of cleanliness and sanitation was exceptional.
