Michael is available for online lessons via Zoom, and 'in person' & remote session work.
Pick up 'The Michael Gregory Band - Guitarchitecture' to hear more of Michael's amazing guitar playing.
To demonstrate the absolute noise levels of all of the amps in this series, no noise reduction or noise gates were used. No EQ or compression was added during the mixdown. You are hearing the raw, unprocessed sound of these amps (except for the horrible audio compression that the CZcams bots thought would sound good).
Michael Gregory had no idea what guitar amps he was going to demonstrate when he walked into the studio the day of 'filming', so if you see him fumbling around with the controls, these were his natural first reactions.
SIGNAL CHAIN:
Guitarist: Michael Gregory
Guitar 1: Ernie Ball / Music Man LIII Steve Lukather model
Guitar 2: Fender Telecaster (Mexican) w/ Seymour Duncan Antiquity (50's era PAF replicas) humbucker pickups.
Amp: Peavey 5150 Combo (Block Logo)
Guitar Amp Recording Chain: Senheisser MD409 → API 312 Mic Pre → Neve 1073 (EQ bypassed). (No signal processing was applied during mixdown)
Michael's Lavalier Microphone: Audio Technica MT830R. This microphone blended with the guitar amp mics and provided a little bit of ambience. We chose to leave Michael's narration a tad bit low, as to not create an overabundance of ambiance, and also chose to leave this microphone unprocessed, without EQ and compression.
Patrick's Microphone: Shure SM7b (this mic was completely ducked by the guitar amp mic to keep the quantity of mics to a minimum while you hear Michael playing)
Finally! A demo on this amp that isn't CHUGCHUG.
Great demo, great playing. I will have to try some of those settings and see what I like.
Wow!!! Michael Gregory can play! Absolutely loved this demo. Finally someone actually demonstrated some of the versatility of this amp. Thank you for doing this!👍🙏🤘
Thanks for the kind words!
Low gain channel, switches off, turn that low up and those highs down... That's the first thing he dials in. I love it. This amp really shines on that setting. Who says 5150s can't get good cleans?
People for reason seem to think that no amp besides a 65 fender deluxe reverb has no business being clean and idk why. That’s a great sound I ain’t gonna lie but a lot of other amps have great cleans too.
Heard Eddie and some others preferred the combo to the head. Some say combo is more aggressive. And better cleans...
These combo amps are absolutely perfect
There is a girth to the 5150 clean sound that nothing else has. Sounds fantastic with a Strat as well.
Absolutely the best demo of this amp! Great job, Michael! Thank you!
This just popped in my feed. I’m spending all night with my OG 5150 Head and 4 x 12 angled cab
I had one of these back in the days and its one of the very few amps I regret selling.
This was my first tube amp. I've had it for 26 years now. Great demo.. Killer.. Killer playing!
I had a bias pot fitted to mine because they're biased quite cold from the factory, probably to prolong valve life.
So biased to a more normal setting it sounds so much better, kinda brings it to life .
Volume wise it's as loud as my satriani head through a 67 Marshall 4x12...impressive!
Interesting, I've seen most people say the old combos were actually biased quite warm, especially compared to the heads, and that bias mods are unecessary for combos. Is yours an old peavey 5150 or one of the EVH's?
@jamieperry3731 it's the old 5150 .
Yeh I've used both and preferred the combo . I've gigged both 30 years now there was a noticeable difference after the bias mod was done in a good way..
I agree the head version would probably show a bigger improvement, but you don't know till you try.
Ive owned one since 2002. One of my prized possessions. This is one of the best demos on youtube of this amp.
I bought mine new in 96, and it is the only guitar amp I've ever owned or needed. I love it! Other than scratchy pots, I've never had any problems with it.
wow great playing and amazing tones. probably the BEST demo of this amp i've ever seen.
Very glad that I stumbled across this video. Great demo of this amp. I really like the different tones that Michael gets out of it. He is a great guitar player. You two are funny and work well together. Thanks for showing the settings! Very helpful for us tone nuts. Thanks again for the video!
Agreed... Michael is an amazing player, and an amazing person. Thank you for the warm comments.
I am buying this amp tomorrow and this is exactly what i needed to hear and thanks for showing the settings . i feel i am set up for success clean and dirty Michael is clean player and i love the tone of this amp!!! thanks BEST amp demo on you tube!
You won't be disappointed.
More cluck for your buck, I almost fell out of my chair! Excellent playing, great amp, I could listen to this all day! Thank-you for putting this out for us!
What a great player and that amp demo was just right.
A great demo of a great amp! I want to sell mine because it's too loud for where I would use it (at home) and I was looking for a video to demonstrate to potential buyers what it can do.
Seeing this I am tempted to keep it...
Did you keep it? A volume pedal or attenuator might be the answer for at home play.
saw a blues guy use one of these and was insane. tones all over the map, beautiful feedback
Wow, that guy can play! The amp sounds amazing, but I think Michael Gregory would make sound any amp like heaven.
Didn’t know Michael Gregory but now I can say he ´a great guitarist. Seriously this guy knows how to make amps sound and his technic is awesome ! Great demo!
Thank You Greg... Completely agree with you. He was our ONLY choice for this video series.
Finally, adults in the room. Yes I’m a boomer but it’s refreshing hearing somebody who has a clue. Great playing, no gratuitous bullshit. The man knows how to get a good tone. Although I suspect he could make a Randall amp sound mature.😀
Thank you for your kindness
By far the best demo of any amp I've seen , and damn great playing too.
Now THIS is how its done ! Great player , great amp . Best demo of this amp . Great video .
I know by listening Michael can play anything.
Love that 5150 amp . !
This is my favorite example along with that other video of the guy who shows off the 5150 with his strat. This amp is a clean machine, so many things to get it pristine too. I just throw a mxr 10 in the loop, a delay and it's chimey as heck. Just can't pick so hard XD Michael understands this as exampled by his amazing playing.
Scuse me, lol, I have to go practice now. I have one of these amps had it for many years. Hardly use it. But I won't sell it . I use a Marshall DSL 40 CR for practice and I use a Marshall 410H full stack. This 5150 is so heavy. Its a beast! Wheels help out a lot. The sound is awesome. Thanks guys appreciate it.
You can play your ass off my brotha. Love it! 🤘I'm a HUGE EVH GEAR AND GUITAR FAN FAN!
Subscribed immediately!
You did an awesome Demo there, guys!
Nice Content
Absolute best amp I’ve ever played through. I consider it my holy grail as sadly, I sold it years ago. But I’m going to buy it again. Mark my words, universe. It will be mine again. Oh yes.
I guess now we know Senheisser MD409 is the mic for the Sheffield Speaker. I also love how Micheal EQ's with his ears and Im 100% certain the player has something to do with the superb sound :)
Yea! You sold one dude😂thanks
Great playing and a great demo. I have this amp tucked away in my closet. Too powerful for bedroom levels. Doesn't get a chance to come out to often, but it rips when it does. I always had a challenge getting the settings just right. You dialed them in perfectly...
They are reliable work horses luv my amp plug it into a old Marshall cab sounds amazing
Have this amp, love how it has a handle up top like you're just gonna grab it and go. 🤣
That's actually more comical than the three handed VOX AC30 handles! Who has 3 hands?
I remember when they first came out. I was in a music store and there was this big advertisement with a life-size cardboard cutout of Ed. I think he was even using a few on stage when I saw them in the summer of 95.
I traded a fender baseman head and some cash for one when they 1'st came out ' used it 3/4 hours total' put the cover on it and put it away' never was used again' sold it for $325.00 and didn't regret it then.
Was like new' wish I'd kept it now.
I know these guys!! I would love to hang at one of these. Awesome video.
Great demo
I love mine as well.
I hardly ever use the Red channel.
And I am a metal guy!
Green channel with a boost is sick.
Awesome picking.
Never saw this guy. Stumbled on this video from finding combo vs. head search. Michael is amazing. He is just as good as Phil X at playing these classic riffs like a library. Throws out Heart along with classic old school metallica. Truly inspiring. Teslla - what you give is nothing.. like breathing to him. note for note.. He's better than Phil X actually the more I get thru it..
Great amp!!
That cat can play
At Min: 12:00 you dialed the eq settings of Ed, as pictured in the commercial depliant. And It started to sing... I had that same amp, sold for a Evh 5150 III, It was not the same. The combo Is a great amp but too heavy. I Wish to have It profiled with a kemper with those eq settings...
Gold
Man...i got 2 of these amps and was about to sell one...thank God i didn't...
11:10
Stock speakers? Great demo!
Loved watching and hearing him play. Amp Definitely holds that VanHalen sound. Was wondering if you were using any effects pedals?
The only thing between the guitar and the amp is a cable. Nothing in the effects loop either.
Gallagher jams!!!
Amps like the SLO, 5150, DR do much better through more balanced speakers like Eminence Legends (stock on all SLO products for 30 years) or Celestion Classic Lead 80s, than V30s.
What’s that lick at 11:40 from? I’ve heard it so many times
Magic Man by Heart
Speakers. Drop some greenbacks in there.....woosh....another amp morphed.
I have one, can anyone tell me where I can find some tubes??
I think there are places like 'Tubes and More' that have tube sets for sepecific amps like the AC30.
@@velvettonestudios4914 Thank you ☺️
I had one of these when they first came out. Noisiest piece of junk I ever owned. I traded it not long after I got it. 🤷🏼♂️
1x12 or 2x12?
What riff is that at 15:08?
