I'm all for having diverse characters and showing the darker sides of reality within fiction but something just feels off with this. Not pandering like the BFV debacle but something else....idk maybe because it's "political" is the simple answer I'm overlooking. Does anyone else feel like this?

      I feel like if you have never experienced similar things like what the characters have then of course it will make you uncomfortable. But for me it’s not because I know exactly what it feels like to be Mexican American in present day America. Anyway, I think it’s great that the life is strange team was brave enough to address these issues but I can understand how it can make some people uncomfortable

    • @sirmcfluffy9256
      @sirmcfluffy9256 Před 5 lety +21

      @@lydiaaa5628 It doesn't make me feel uncomfortable but I see how it seems like that from the way I typed it. I've experienced prejudice before albeit not on this level mostly things I've learned to get humour out of and have seen similar things play out like this before irl so I understand or at least grasp what they were going through. But I just can't explain it, I don't believe it's forced but still something seems off about it. Maybe the whole BFV drama has made me cynical of the "portrayal" of things in games. Like I said maybe because it's "political" but I do think games should be able to portray things as long it's accurate. Hmmm thinking about now though has me thinking this whole "setup" was just an easy way to earn sympathy points for the characters but again that's probably just me being cynical .

That sudden change effect in a game maybe make you little shock but that's make this game a masterpiece.

    I enjoyed the first episode. I'm going to replay it on a new save knowing what I know after finishing it. I'm definitely looking forward to next episodes.
    I feel like they learnt a lot after making the first game. Graphics look better, characters feel more real and believable and Daniel is (imo) a better second character than Chloe. He's a lot less annoying and the voice actor did a great job.
    Sean might feel a bit cringy to some, especially during that mirror scene, but I remember doing similar things when I was 16.
    Minor spoiler warning. This game will hit you in the feels like a truck in the first hour and make you cry some more towards the end. The scene with watching old christmass video left me in tears.
    Pro tip: look around for interactions. They're not always obvious and they're interesting. I feel like some might be important in next chapters.

    I believe it is essential that you feel a connection to at least one of the two brothers (I was lucky to love both of them) so you are drawn in. If you are, I am sure the IMHO excellent storytelling, well-written dialogue (I am one of the people who actually enjoyed the conversations Sean has with his friends and family) will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride if you let it.
    I have never seen a game where your actions and words matter as much as they do in LIS2 - everything you do or say can potentially influence the relationship between the older and younger brother and also how the younger brother sees the world.
    Several of the episodes have different variations to the ending and the final episode no less than four (with 3 minor variations added) determined by big and small decisions you make along your way.

    I adored the dynamic between Max and Chloe -- probably my favorite character dynamic in any game -- but I will eagerly say that I think this episode is stronger than the first episode of LiS1 by a wide margin. Visuals, writing, mechanics and presentation, everything has been improved. LiS1 felt like a time travel mechanic wrapped around a game/story that "wrote too many checks it couldn't cash in" per your lingo in this video. LiS2's opener, by comparison, is SO much more focused and realistic in its scope, while simultaneously doing more, bigger, with more variety. Max and Chloe will always be special to me but I am very glad to see DontNod back on the saddle with a chip on their shoulder after the disappointing prequel of last year.

    My biggest gripe is the politics. Only one person they meet doesn't want to lynch them, and this is portrayed as completely normal in today's America. It's the most absurd portrayal of people I've ever seen. Subtle as a car crash.

    *_Here are my thoughts on Life is Strange 2:_*
    Life is Strange 2 is a good narrative by most standards. It follows a clichéd story of two brothers whose father was wrongfully killed by a police officer, much unlike the originality of the prior entries into the series. The game stacks up well with other choice-based storytelling titles of the same nature. With that being said, it fails to get even remotely close to achieving the special bond that is present in both Life is Strange and Life is Strange: Before the Storm. In the original Life is Strange, Chloe's need to find Rachel, the one person who was there for her in an intense time of desperation, re-sparks a bond that she and her childhood friend Max once had. Then in the prequel, we get to see something truly special develop between Chloe and Rachel. A friendship.. but more. The type of relationship many of us could only dream of having. While there were a few cringe-inducing dialogue lines in the original, it felt real. Like real interactions taking place between real people with real emotions. The saddest a piece of entertainment media has ever made me feel was the final scene of Life is Strange: Before the Storm. When Rachel's phone is ringing with a call from Chloe and an additional nineteen missed. The player can do nothing but watch as we hear the sound of a camera's shutter capturing a soon-to-be-murdered Rachel. It gives us the same sense of hopelessness that Chloe must have felt calling Rachel. Life is Strange 2, on the other hand feels entirely scripted, and while it is a decent game, good at best, it fails to live up to the name and expectations of its incredible, emotionally-charged predecessors. This game makes me long for nothing more than another continuation of Chloe, Rachel and Max's stories. Maybe one day, DONTNOD will deliver to us Life is Strange: Beyond the Storm. But until then, we'll have to settle for this.

    The road trip theme is actually the thing I didn't like, so it's good you point it out. I liked the specific location filled to the brim with characters that you'll discover, uncover and get to know. In LiS2 this is not the case. You'll just move from place to place and you'll never get to know the characters that well until you move on to somewhere else.
    A shame, if you ask me. Especially because that was one of the strong qualities of the first game.

    The first episode also has a problem with contrived decisions like how (spoilers) Your dad is killed because he approached an aggressive officer arresting his kids and he is shot even though he earlier said to be carful since I quote “Things are very scary in the country right now” also why would the officer be so nervous as to pull his gun on a kid that is a foot shorter than him in a situation where the kid both wasn’t armed and was trying to help the person he incapacitated. Also isn’t it a big coincidence that a cop was passing right through the neighborhood as the main character punched the bully. The game is just full of so many coincidences and contrived decisions that it’s distracting.

      I'm digging this episode (I'm about 20 minutes away from completing it) but I have to agree with you on the whole point. Literally me and my girlfriend (we played the original together and we like to play these story based games together) were trying to wrap our heads figuring out why they even forced that scene so much... It felt so out of place, I think the overall following sections could have been implemented without the need for something so unbelievable to have happened.
      It's already a bit too much to have a teenager who gets punched just fall to the ground almost dying or dying (don't know if he died or not honestly) but to have a cop passing by and then suddenly shooting the dad for no apparent reason is so lame... Really disappointed us a lot. The scene with the store owner is a bit more believable because we can just attribute his actions to racism but the other scene is just a cheap trick to make you emotional.

      I mean, as a Hispanic whose seen her dad stopped by jumpy cops multiple times, and after seeing that Faceboom Live stream of a calm black man being shot by an officer, it makes sense to me. Esteban was likely trying to just protect his children, wanted to do anything he could to keep that officer from hurting them. That officer, after seeing all that fake blood, and then reacting to a Mexican man coming at him, likely reacted based on his subconscious prejudices and fear. Frankly, it all seems pretty plausible to me 🤷🏽‍♀️
      Also, it isnt unheard of for cops to be passing by neighborhoods where they know there are Hispanic or black kids. It's simply the world we live in, my friend, and it fucking sucks

    I loved the first game to bits, greatest game I ever played, alongside Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines (whole different cup of tea, though). I was immediately excited for Before the Storm even though I was a bit skeptical about it living up to the original, being a prequel and made by a different sudio and all. But then against all odds it turned out to be everything I wanted after all.
    So I've been looking forward to this ever since the very first whispers about it and I was totally fine with new characters, too. But then came Captain Spirit and it was just... dull and bland. Nothing about it resonated with me in any way. And then with every bit of trailer they released I got more and more un-hyped for this. I don't even think I'll play it now, I feel nothing for these characters, this setting, anything. No part of this world engages me in the slightest. And hell, I'm pretty liberal, I should be eating this up if that was the only problem with it. But there was just something about the first story as a whole that made it special and so far (future episodes might well improve in that regard) that something is just completely missing from this next chapter. I have rarely felt so let down by a video game sequel and for that to come from a franchise so dear to my heart is honestly painful. Here's hoping Dontnod survives long enough to make LiS 3 a once again interesting game...

If you 100% the game twice and see both endings then in the background during the credits you will hear the developer's voice whisper in a heavy French accent, "I'm le sorry that the writing in this game is tré weak and full of social justice garbage. I don't understand how teenagers talk or act in real life, but I was told by my fellow Frenchmen that you Americans like to say phrases like 'Shaka-brah' right? There are serval differences between TT and DN. Life is Strange is a own made universe and so no expensive licence was needed. Also it has it's own touch but still is progressing from the first game machanic wise. They have improved the item system and the whole UI.
      The episodes have a lot more time in between. (It was 8-10 weeks between the episodes in the first season) So we can expect better quality because the devs had more time to build the story.
      DN also don't just realieases this kind of games. Vampyr, for example, is also made by them.
      I think they are just fine.

    Honestly, as soon as my decisions aren't wiped for the entirety of episode 5, I'd feel like it's better than the first game.
    So far tho, I'm extremely disappointed, it's boring and bland and literally no decisions matter for the whole episode, hopefully it gets better.

    • @GTKavanagh

      The decisions don't seem like they mean anything just yet but they'll mold your little brother's attitude and choices.
      Like, if you steal stuff, he'll think that's an okay thing to do.
      But I do agree that the choices don't Seem as grand as the first game made things out to be. And the game does drive a little slower but I do think your choices will be more impacting as it goes along. Especially without the safety net of time travel (which I kinda miss but I'm curious to see how this sequel handles the new power)

      @Sir Galahad I used to not like these types of games either, but I've found they provide some of the best stories in gaming. I've started to like stories more now as compared to when I started gaming.

    • @gr8_chalupaking_
      @gr8_chalupaking_ Před 5 lety

      @Sir Galahad I understand. It's more of an interactive story then it is a game. But the focus is story telling, and I feel that dontnod do that well. I get why you can't get into that though, not a genre for everybody. But for what it is the first lis is a great story, so I personally have high hopes for this one.

    • @gr8_chalupaking_
      @gr8_chalupaking_ Před 5 lety

      @Sir Galahad I agree, dontnod made the only interactive story game I've ever liked. Though I bought lis before the storm, which was kind of bad. I haven't liked any telltale or quantic dream games I've played very much. I feel like dontnod make stories good enough to stand on their own and worth buying, and for me lis showed that.

    • @gr8_chalupaking_
      @gr8_chalupaking_ Před 5 lety

      @Sir Galahad I haven't played that in so long I forgot about it. Really good game. The tension in that game and the fact that your decisions actually changed what happened made the game great. But minimum gameplay besides hiding and puzzles is common in horror games.

    Watched a 13 hour youtube video of a complete run through of the story. Yes, there were some things I found disagreeable, but such is life. The important thing is that I really grew to care for the characters deeply, and I cried at the end. Then again, I'm a sucker for coming of age stories like this.

    In all honesty now that I've played the game so far I'm loving the game more then the first. The political sense doesn't bother me people may say it takes up most of the space but it has only took place in the first chapter. And to be honest I like the characters much better I might make people mad but Max and Chloe's angst bothered me. I liked the first part of life is strange but I'm loving the dynamic between family and the fact that what you choose can't rewind so you get heavy emotionally moments. Don't get me wrong life is strange had very emotional moments but I couldn't sit through those moments know Max could have restarted it the whole time.
    Spoilers ahead..
    See the moment Kate died caught me but after that it didn't affect me much but the first and second chapters of life is strange 2 actually emotionally made me cry
    The moment mushroom died I would never want to hurt another creature but the actual rage that I felt made me want to hurt the puma idk it's probably just me
