Great review David! I'm going to order this for travel for my A7siii. Imagine the range with clear image zoom! The versatility with the 2.8 and close focusing at the wide end to telephoto range without a huge sacrifice in quality is amazing! This would even work well on a gimbal for interesting compressed shots. Also going to pick up the Sony 24mm f1.4 for gimbal, low light, and astrophotography. Good times to be a Sony user!

Tamron completed their Ultimate Trinity Zoom Lens then they release their most versatile Lens in the market for just 799 $. Travel, hobbyist, casual run and gun shooters and even professional shooters who wants to go light are rejoicing for going full frame. Definitely, the most affordable lens for an excellent top notch quality. Can't wait for whats lens are coming from Tamron. I won't wonder if Sony FF camera market now will hit the roof once again more due to this step up marketing by Tamron and other non native lens creators. Great job.

Great review, this lens is going to be popular. The typical 24-200 (ish) lenses always start at f3.5 or f4, but this one starting at f2.8 is a game changer, as you could handle low light as well, at 28mm, without having to switch to another lens. Also I believe it reaches 70mm at f4, which is also nice.

Great review. Thanks so much for including an A6400 in it. I'm looking for a good travel zoom for my A6600. As I've become more proficient in photography over the years, I'm finding my old Sony 18-200 LE from my NEX-5r days has some serious shortcomings (particularly in lower light). I'm currently up in the air between this Tamron (I like the faster speed at longer focal lengths for this), a Sony 24-240 (I like that it goes wider and has a longer zoom but I'm not sure if I'll see much improvement over my 18-200 with it), and the Sony 18-135 (lightest and widest option of the bunch, but the aperture slows down pretty quickly). I'll use it for mostly family style pics (mostly outdoors) when we travel or at family gatherings - I'm already covered with shorter range with my Sony 16-50 2.8 (old, adapted A mount SSM lens that works great), otherwise I would probably skip the long zoom and be looking at the Tamron 28-75. Any thoughts as to which of these three zooms I'm considering might work best (Tamron 28-200, Sony 24-240, or Sony 18-135)?

Thanks. Looks great. I had the Sony 24- 240 which I virtually used all the time but sold it in favour of the Tamron 28 - 75 mostly because it was so much lighter.......which is why I would go for this lens. Always looking for lighter lenses. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the onion bokeh which I have seen on other reviews.

I would not recomend this lens for APS-C, 28-200 becomes 42-300. 42 mm is not wide enough to be realy versatile. The Sony E 18-135 would work better even when it's not great. I own the 16-55 2.8 and the 70-350 which means I have to change lens sometimes.

@@CC-gt3ro Ah, I did mean the 24-240, though "completely wrong" is a bit strong: the 24-105 isn't really comparable as it's got far less reach, a stop less of light, has in-lens AF and costs about twice as much. If you're looking for spectacular bokeh or to pixel peep in the corners, both lens are sub-par, but if you're looking for a walk-around lens, there are few reasons to go for the Sony other than name. In dusty environments I guess I'd go for the Sony as it's got an internal zoom?
