Still one of most successful Olympic Games ever held Sydney really raised the bar for future Olympiads
Cathy Freeman is the only person who has lit the Olympic Cauldron and won a gold medal at the same Olympics.
I still believe this was the best and truest opening ceremony of all -
it is not just about television - it is aboht who you are and be true to yourself -
only Australians have the balls to put the horse in the centre of pride and gratitude - and be a great Nation in the world -
( and you need confidence to let something like that depend on a Horse - it shows mastership )
for me it was the best opening so far
The 2000 Sydney Olympics was so beautiful! Watching Cathy Freeman light the Olympic torch brought tears to my eyes đ„đđ„°
Why am I crying? Iâm not even Australian! I blame the music for making me cry, itâs so beautiful
when Cathy Freeman was revealed to be the cauldron lighter, My late stepdad (god rest his soul) yelled: YOU LITTLE BEAUTY!!!
It was a glorious moment to see Cathy Frame play the final part in the lighting of the Olympic flame. That she also then won the 400m was perfection! đŠđș
I miss these times so much. My home since I was born, my country. But so much has changed. I love how hopeful and united we were as a country then. I hope this feeling comes back for Brisbane 2032. Make it feel like home again.
The way the flame was set.. it was spectacular and so touching!!
I think I remember skiving a day off school to watch this, i was 12 years old when these Olympic Games were opened, never in my wildest dream back then would I have thought I would have attended an Olympic Games let alone my home country - London 2012.
No matter the year or country the Olympic Flame brings me to tears for the symbology of peace, purity and most of all 'The Olympic Truce' calling on all to lay down arms and prejudices as athletes traverse the world to the Greatest Show on Earth,
yesđđđ
The best organized olympics ever, the only ânegativeâ thing was that it was on during the night, when you live in sweden :)
The one event where the world doesn't focus on race or gender, the rich or the poor. It's the event where nationality is all that matters to us all.
I remember this opening ceremony can't believe it is been 19 years ago
Sydney was to this day the greatest Olympic Games.
2032 will be even better when the games return to Australia.
Brisbane 2032
This will be the most welcoming and friendliest games ever held.
Wow only a few days ago it was announced that brisbane will host 2032 olympics. You just predicted it.
Fond memories. The cauldron rising around Cathy Freeman remains the image of the Games for me.
Sydney should host the Olympic Games again !!!!!
It should be Melbourne
Sydney 2000 and Melbourne 1956 have had them. We are unlikely to see the Olympic in Australia for another 50 years. We however do have the Commonwealth Games (former British Empire Games) regularity which is about 65 nations and 1/3 of humanity.
Let's push for 2040!
YES!!!!!
@@adrianjackson2696 Brisbane's going for 2032
Apparently was on gas bottles as was rising, they say it was lucky they filled them up as the delay almost caused them to run out. 20 years ago.
moves me to tear of joy and pride
Absolutely wonderful flame lighting. So awesome and beautiful yup
Very ahead of its time this HD vignette
This was the best candle burning in the whole history of the modern Olympic Games. I do not think any candle burning was as exciting and touching as those in Sydney. Probably everyone who watched it, at least once shed a tear, seeing Cathy running up the stairs and when the candle emerges from the water :)
CANDLE
Plz make more like these especially for old Olympiads for which we do not know much
The most beautiful torch ever designed, and a succesful event made in Australia.
magical! pure magic!
gosh I have tears in my eyes :)
this made me cry
yes me too
Best Olympic ever for ever
Iâm not crying, YOUâRE CRYING!
this is the historic video Australia will never forget forever
YES !!! Fantastic video... â„ :-)))
This happened on my birthday.
I was 9 and like 7 months old then I can still recall some of the action. Ian Thorpe's great performances, the DIRTY move by the Italian MTB rider against Marga Fullana, the points race win by Joan Llaneras, the triathlon, Cathy Freeman's super-emotional win and Michael Johnson's last "clean" appearance
A ton of memories! And they're still quite fresh :-)
El encendido de fuego olĂmpico mas Ă©pico que he podido presenciar
Gave me chills when my country was announced...
They used a fake british announcer, they edited out the REAL Australian actor, John Stanton!
I need to know the music that played in the whole lighting scene - it wasn't part of the ceremony, it was added in this editing and it's beautiful
There's a whole documentary on the Sydney 200 games sharing some of the success stories of the game. Produced by the great Bud Greenspan. The Olympic YT page has it... you will hear this music in it.
The greatest games of all.
yes best Olympic ever for ever

Beautiful.
Could you please upload the whole opening ceremony
What is the second song name its really good on the opeing discrspion of the aussie land
On one level, I feel sorry for Cathy Johnson, to be associated with such a memorable mishap as the glitch that held up the cauldron at these Games. However, glitch or no glitch, I remember Sydney's Cauldron Moment as one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, and a real highlight in one of my all-time favorite Opening Ceremonies. Thanks for sharing with us.
Memorable mishaps were the three-quarter lighting of the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games cauldron and the fifth ring fail at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games. We who were watching the Sydney Olympic Games opening ceremony on television in the U.S. never detected the delay as a glitch. The immensity of the cauldron with the cascading water is something that can only be appreciated by staring at it in awe for a long period of time, the same way one admires the Sydney Opera House. In 2002, I visited Sydney and stood under the cauldron like Cathy Freeman did.. (No, I didn't raise a lit candle above my head pretending it was a torch.) A few years ago, a visiting Aussie told me of the technical problems in 2000, so I never knew about it until recently.
but without that glitch, this cauldron lighting wouldnât be as memorable.
Wonderful video!! So proud to be an aussie :)
i love the poem at the begining
Wow. Seeing Cathy holding that torch to ignite the Olympic flame... tears, man. NO way I can watch that with dry eyes.
beautiful :)
Best Best Best Best Olympic ever for ever
omg i'm so excited for more!
I was pretty baked watching this in 2000.
Michael Phelps' first Olympics :) đđ±đ€
Wishing they would post the entire Sydney opening ceremonies here I missed it would be cool to see
Kathy Freeman... it took me 22 years to watch her light that Olympic cauldron again. I was wondering what she'd do when the flames started circling.
Best one ever
Do Go On
El mĂĄs bello de la historia
This is the best Olimpic game at the moment, sorry london, sorry Beijing.
yes man đ
Am I the only one who gets overwhelmed with emotion when watching this?
What a beautiful country
they used a fake announcer, the REAL announcer at the Opening Ceremony had an Australian accent, not British!!!!!
Under the water??! How was that? :D
The Aussies know how to put on an oberdramatic show. Thats why we happily include them to ESC as well. Love Australiađ€

Who is the guy waving the Aussie flag in the parade?
Andrew Gaze. A well known Australian basketballer at the time
Hope Naomi wins gold
So apparently the flame almost went out in the cauldron,.. when they checked the gas the next day it was almost empty.. that wouldâve been very embarrassing.....
Who else was born in 2000??
ĐŃŃŃĐŸ)
That's not quite how I remember it... pretty sure the Cauldron got stuck for 5 minutes half way up lol
Not the correct music
