He didn’t send a bomb, or hoards of soldiery, or a world killer. He faced the Chief on equal ground, and I think Chief respected that.
I also think Chief was making a statement about himself. “At the end he was just a soldier,” has some cool implications when you consider that Cortana comes from the Latin root word curtus, which means cut-off, broken, or incomplete. The Chief is treated like an asset by his own people, and is a monster in the eyes of the races he fights against. Without Cortana, Chief feels like he’s just another soldier-incomplete.
And that hits pretty damn hard.

Yeah, him and the Banished still wanted to wipe out humanity, but it wasn't because of blind religious fanaticism like the Covenant, or outright feelings of superiority like the Didact, but because the Banished were fed up with being oppressed, and would seek to eliminate any potential source of it before it could shackle them again.
He really was the only antagonist in the series, other than Atriox, that seemed like an opponent in a war dictated only by rationality rather than fervor, which is probably why Chief was able to sympathise with him better than other enemies. In the end, he really was just a soldier.

Soldiers fight for what they belief is right, that’s why master chief shows him respect. Also, the guy’s planet was destroyed by Cortana, so he wanted revenge, which is understandable.

I read a comic a long time ago. It was a retelling of the story of Judas Iscariot after he betrays Jesus and ends up in hell. While he’s being escorted through that desolate place by Satan, he comes across the monster Goliath from the Book of Samuel. Satan offers a lament for the giant.
“Goliath. The monster from your childhood stories. But in the end, just another soldier, fighting on the wrong side.
And sent here because he called God another name.”

This is the honor of battle. Two enemies who both think they are doing right and understand why the other believes so, but also understands why they must be at odds with each other. It's respect among warriors, when you both know that only one will win, and you both prepare for death, you know you both can die and respect the other for having the courage to fight against each other.

I always liked that Cheif respected Esherem in a way. He never had to verbalize it, but just the fact he went through all of his trials and fought him on HIS terms, it was cool to see that side of chief. It reminds me a bit of the relationship between Kirby and DeDeDe.
