We’re sharing some knowledge about how much of the falling Interior ceiling to remove, and then how to re-plaster it.
Note: Most times there is no need to remove the entire ceiling.
These joint compounds come in 20-pound bags of dry powder.
Yes, you have to mix with a drill in clean buckets.
Names of the most common joint Compounds are Westpac Fast Set or USG Easy Sand in this video: • Joint compound for dry... 2:26.
I show the two types of gypsums, Westpac and Easy Sand.
Personally, I can't feel or tell the difference between either one.
Keep in mind, that you can also you Structo-Lite, or lime basecoats with lime finishes, as in the videos below.
One of the most common causes of a buckling ceiling is movement or vibrations. This can be caused by slamming heavy wood doors or fastening hanging swings to the ceiling joist under the stucco.

I had a painting and repair business for 20yrs. I repaired many ceilings almost the same way you did.
On really rough ceilings I sometimes would locate the ceiling joist and fasten 1 x 3 boards and then hang new 3/8" drywall on the ceiling.
Taped and finished and then would paint it for them if they wanted.
When repairing areas of ceilings and walls I prided myself on matching the textures on them.
There's a talent to it and you have it keep up the great work!!
It wasn't always about the pay but just seeing ppl so happy and surprised of how well the finish matched the exsiting. It really made me feel good.

Excellent demonstration of a patch in! It’s a dying art of which I’m proud to be a part of! I lucked out about a decade ago getting employment with a library system that has several Carnegie funded libraries built around the turn of the 20th century. Lost of plasterwork to be done in those buildings! It feels good being a part of something trying to take care of classic architecture.

So many steps for such an easy repair. I have been a plasterer for over 30 years. I have never used any sort of "lightweight" plaster or mud mix. I have always used the hard Durabond "brown bag" it use to be pink with horse hair. Also, I see that you did NOT lap the mud between the lath. It is in my practice to Lap the mud through the gaps in the lath so that the plaster goes behind the lath and "hook" onto the back of it. Creating a stronger bond. Just a preference. Kudos on the video.

I did a similar size and type of ceiling repair a few years ago. I chose to install screws around the perimeter in the plaster that was going to be kept, just to make sure it didn't continue to separate from the lath. The screws, with a 1-1/4" washer, were countersunk into the plaster so they could be filled after. Some screws hit the joists and some just into the lath. The patch is now invisible, stable and still holding. I remember my neck aching for a couple of days. lol

I once had the outer walls of my house redone. The plaster guy that showed up was an old fat, short Italian guy with no shirt, a big tanned belly, missing teeth. a big smile and a bald tanned head. I thought the plaster company had sent some loser until the guy started to hand texture the walls in an almost effortless manner. It was beautiful and mind boggling. My Italian Plaster Guy was obviously an artist and impressed me just like Kirk in this video. It's not a job, it's an art.

Nice fine work standards as usual Captain Kirk. There is one thing that i like to do before I slap any new stuff on and thats to give the edges of the old plaster a spray of clean water and then go around the edges, just like you did, and push in the new stuff so that it helps to strengthen the new stuff to the old.
Like I said before on other posts I much prefer using the lime putty mortars and plasters because you have more time to play with it as it's just so versatile as well as less expensive.

I was recently playing with some new lime mixes and on one panel of wooden laths I slapped on a haired 3:1 sea sand & lime and with the remaining mortar, on another panel, added some molasses and sawdust to the sea sand and lime. This was because I had been reading Millars book on Lime published in about 1890,
it's a fascinating read about different mixes including the 1st experiments using cement.
As expected the 1st panel was really fragile and useless, but the mix with the molasses is really strong and has set really well. I have even stuck some old iron nails in both panels to see if any rusting occurs, this is because when working on exterior stuff you have to use stainless steel screws and nails.
I was also looking at cement mortars where glass balls were added to the mix and you get interesting light shows with that.
My poor wife's eyes glaze over when I talk about lime and yesterday we met our new neighbours, and in their case, he is a cement specialist and his wife's eyes glaze over when he talks about cement, so there we all were, sitting out in the garden, drinks in hand, me talking to him and my wife talking to his wife and we all got on so well because his wife works with problematic teenagers as does my wife, what a small world.
He also also worked for many years in different foundries traveling all over the globe to some really out of the way places because of his knowledge on foundry dynamics.

I know, I have mentioned this before but that looks a bit sketchy. That is a lot of weight on that flexible metal. And 20 minute mud put on that thick will take a while to dry. I would just go with drywall screwed to wood and finish with fiberglass tape and quick set. Less chance of cracking and just as fast. I do these repairs all the time. Mine are flawless and zero callbacks. To each his own.

    • @huejanus5505

Lids always dry fast. The old wood keys suck the moisture out of that hot mud. That is a rock solid repair. Drywall sucks. Roof leaks, water intrusion, drywall gets wet and it's ruined. It falls through the screws, turns into a smelly mold farm. Plaster is so much better.

The original plaster weighed much more that the 20 minute quick-set.... That said, the quick-set doesn't dry...it is a heat cure chemical process. I've been in the business over 45 years. This repair is most excellent. This is also approved on historical buildings too. Drywall patches are not. P.s. this guy is also a pro.

StuccoPlastering The hand eye coordination comes from being an artist and art teacher. I can see how this can be very difficult for many. It is an art and it did take me about 15 hours to do a 4x7 foot hole but I think I could do the next one much faster. Your video really helped, I watched it three times before I went for it. I'm a little surprised that you would use drywall "hot mud" over wood lath and suggest to others that this material is even remotely applicable to this type of repair. Setting type or any type of joint compound is not a product that will be strong enough to bridge over the gaps in the wood lath, especially in an earth quake prone area. Why wouldn't you use Struccto Lite directly over wood lath ,or even better, with wire lath added, and still better with added micro fibers? Or even use blueboard provided there's enough depth to existing old plaster?

This is incorrect and not a professional repair. I hate being critical, but "rendering" means you mix a loose fiber reinforced mortar and push it up in and form a 3/8 in bed. That should dry 24 hours. Then finish it with plaster of paris or a thin runny gypsum mix. A gypsum base is going to start falling out with the tiniest vibration. Trucks driving by, etc.

    Kirk-
You're right, keying that plaster is key. Thanks so much for showing us how this stuff works. I put up a ceiling stair and needed to patch. I was certain that quickset would just fall right out. But no, I pushed it in as you illustrated and it is staying. Thanks so much!

Good stuff, ceiling repairs are always challenging but so satisfying when you get it just right. Getting the transitions at the edge right can be tricky, and worth giving a lot of attention to. I really like that you match the details, not just the texture but also the slight unevenness.

I can earn from the pros how to do something, it starts with the right information, then the practice of the skill and maybe the results will turn out satisfactory.
