- The kind folks at the EXR Racing Series, a new spec series featuring really fun, light, tube frame race cars, invited Matt up to a test day at Laguna Seca to work with pro racer Alex Premat. Matt and Alex went through a data analysis on the track, using that information to improve lap times in the second session.

Thumbs up for Senna poster.
hell yes
Matt has been slacking on my early morning uploads... the morning just isn't right without it 😂😂😂😂
BTW thank you Matt!!!!
Alex was very fast tearing around the track at 1.39. It just boggles my mind to think back to when MotoGP raced Laguna & Marquez set the track record at 1.21!
I saw the Mazda prototype race cars run a 1:18 in may.
The cars are always going to be quicker than bikes. MotoGP is cool but I prefer the LeMans (Tudor Championship) cars.
Yea, I love LeMons too
LeMons is completely different than LeMans...
So completely different that my comment could be seen as a joke?
Best automotive car channel on CZcams, hands down, way better than all these scrub kids "reviews" all they do is drive straight. Waking up and getting a notification for The Smoking Tire makes my day. Keep up the good work Matt, Zack, and Thad!!!
Biggest difference i see is how early Alex gets back to WOT. He was (in almost all corners) immediately back on the gas after his braking and carrying that moment through the corner. Your braking points were good and conservative. Better safe than sorry. Much needed video for this channel!
You can see in Alex's lap how he is constantly feeding different degrees of steering angle as he approaches the apex and is back on the throttle as soon as possible. In every corner he appears to push the car to the limits of its grip, simply the practice developed from vast experience on the track. Awesome video, thanks for sharing.
Other things that were not mentioned (though I'm sure you're aware of them), but do count: Alex revvs the engine higher, he uses 3rd in 4th corner while you leave it in 4th, he uses 1st gear in the last corner as opposed to 2nd.
But all in all, you're faster than a "decent amateur" and I'm pretty confident you would obtain good results in some semi-pro series. I mean it :P
thanks, and yes, all correct observations. my car had a rev limiter at 7200 RPM, which I hit just before braking for turn 11. If alex's went higher, that would be helpful. Also, the sound rules with 4th gear around turn 5 didn't seem to apply to him, which is fine and probably worth at least a second on its own. I probably still wouldn't go to first in turn 11, but after watching his video more carefully (I didn't see his lap video at all until a week after I did mine) there are some very easy and not risky ways to make up a bunch of that deficit if they give me another go :)
Great video, Matt! In my short experience doing High Speed Touring at Hallett in my car, I found that as the laps went on, I found the courage to trust the car's brakes and tires. That alone made up 2-3 seconds. But, there is a wall that you hit when you realize that this is your own car, that you drove to the track, and your tires which will be getting you around town. That is where a race car driver has an edge; if they wreck, it's the end of a day's racing, bummer. If I wreck it's thousands of dollars out of pocket. My new plan is to take the racing school at Hallett. Their cars, their tires, gas etc. with proper racing instruction. Totally worth it in my book. It was fun to see what my street car could do on the track, but I'd rather save the race track for race cars and street for street cars. This looks like a great controlled environment for instruction; not to mention an amazing track.
One of the coolest automotive channels out right now. This and Roadkill are great! May I suggest a collaboration?
This was really awesome Matt!!! Thanks for making this vid!
Digging this video format! Anything new is much appreciated!
Having driven countless laps of Laguna Seca in Forza and GT over the years, I can see the importance of telemetry. What gear, what corner, apex entry and exit, what braking point, throttle and brake amount, what the car is doing, tyre scream, understeer and oversteer, etc., And while my "imaginary" laps pale in comparison to the real thing, I found myself nodding and muttering agreements to EVERYTHING Matt had to say. Really enjoyed this Matt, agreed with your careful driving, and giggled quite a bit when I saw the pros full blown time attack lap.
Laguna Seca is my fav track. I'll be back up in Nov I think the next meet is for NCRC. Added a bunch of new stuff to my C5 Z06 track car. Can't wait to test it all out :D
My best time with just upgraded brakes and Michelin Super Sport street tires was 1:50.1. I hope I can get close to 1:45.0 in the near future with more seat time with new aero, upgraded brake materials, and Toyo R888's.
O damn!! This looks like SO much fun. Data analyzing and improving, that's just cool AF.
One thing I noticed which plays with the fact the guys has experience is that he would be on the gas before he even got to the apex which we know that he was loading up the chassis for the turn so he could power out of it. I wish I could live next to a track.
Matt, I know you have to be invited to events like this, but this vid was GREAT!! I'd love to see more like this if possible! Huge fan of data and driver improvement over throwing money and mods at shit.
Good shit Matt. I lok forward to more of these and seeing you improve.
Very good! Awesome analysis. Racers are superhuman.
This was awesome! Beautiful data analysis! Great video :-D
One of the better videos, very informative!
Great video, Matt. Nice to see you do something a little different. Keep up the great work.
Loving the content recently!
Really cool video! I don't normally comment, but this was great. Thanks, Matt!
That was a great video Matt!
Despite the view count, I thoroughly enjoyed this more technical video. Myself and others I think could really get behind these type of videos, thanks Matt!
I like the format of this video. It's a nice change from the standard 1 Take
Really enjoyed this one guys.
Awesome video! We didn't have that tech stuff back when I was out there years ago sure is amazing.
great video Matt! keep up the good work i love the one takes but its really nice to see something different!
very interesting as well!
As someone that's never been on a track, this stuff is pretty interesting. Pretty in depth dissection of what a lap time is actually made up of.
On that note "Balls and Talent" is a great name for a new segment >_< where you either get taken out and scared by insane drivers OR do the same to amateurs yourself.
Awesome Vid Matt.
This was a cool ass video Matt. Well done.
This was a cool fucking video. Thanks for this, Matt! I love seeing the technical aspects of things sometimes. Really loving the branching out from time to time with this and the Larry Chen video and stuff like that.
That was a super cool vid. I was hoping to see the fast lap and it was delivered! I don't know how often things like this come up for you but I would definitely watch more.
Thanks! Sadly not very often and they are very expensive. It's only worth it for me because I enjoy the track time at a new place.
Otherwise videos like this are an awful business model.
Matt, any chance you'll visit the Nurburgring soon for some type of video ? I like how you are analyzing the tracks more, kind of like a One Take but for circuits. It would be really cool to see you talk about the track while you are driving it, would make a great vid in my opinion. Anyways, hope to see more track content, I love this kind of stuff
Love these, Matt! Do more one takes on the track! Maximum attack!
Pro's hands look like they are in fast forward, they are constantly doing corrections on the wheel, it's amazing to watch.
Well done, looks like fun!
Matt you are a boss at driving lol if you can come within 4 seconds of a professional driver that has done formula one you are a legend well done mate keep it up
thank you for this Matt!
Interesting video, thanks Matt for sharing it :)
Awesome analysis
Grear video Matt!
Wow, thanks for doing a data video. I hope you get more sponsorship opportunities to get these kind of videos on a regular rotation.
Great video! Really interesting!
Very informative and interesting. This seemed like the quickest 13 min video. I think more similar videos would be sweet.
What a great video (subject matter)!! Thanks!!
Nice change from one takes -- good work.
Nice informative video!
That powerband management played a big factor in the speed he carried, by keeping the revs up, he kept the engine in its sweet spot.
Interesting stuff, Matt
great video, found it very informing, thanks bald man
Matt, I think you sounded a bit defensive, but I don't think that was necessary. All in all, I think you did a pretty good job out there for a first time visiting that track. It was a good video and I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Nice change of pace for The Smoking Tire. Great video
freakin love this matt.. come over to england. castle combe is waiting for you..
Nice use of the data. Would love to see more in depth improvement videos like this (i.e. getting better with different cars vs. pros). Maybe do a series.....
Awesome video
You can spot the difference even by the way Alex keeps using the steering wheel. Since he's trying to push the car to the limit in the corners, he keeps moving it with tiny and quick adjustments avoiding the car from sliding (sry for my English :\ )
Your English is fine, and I was going to say the same thing. Alex is very "twitchy" like a racing driver should be. Constant small inputs and corrections for faster speeds.
+Paul F it's not sawing the wheel all over the place. It's making minor corrections when pushing the limits of the tires. Go watch videos of multiple pro racing drivers behind the wheels of their racecars.
It depends a lot on the car - there are cars that need constant corrections and there are those that don't (F1 cars don't). Can you, please, send a link with Schumacher's lap? What was he driving?
Honestly i think its more the track than the car
There's also a HUGE difference between time trials and an actual race. Tire preservation is a HUGE deal in a race... Time Trials or open track test... who cares about tires.
That body style is fantastic.
That looked like a ton of fun all balled up in the short 1:40 sec.
Great video.
Awesome video! really cool to see how data capturing can make that big of a difference, and Matt stop beating yourself up! you're a better driver than 99% of the people in the comments anyway lol
I hope I'd get to drive on that track one day. Has been my favorite since my childhood PS1 Gran Turismo days :)
Nice! Very nice video!
More episodes as such please.
interesting video. cool change of pace. reminds me of larry's video @ VIR.
Just what you needed.
Laguna Seca is a great track to drive. A little pricey but worth it as a 'bucket list' kind of thing. I drove my 2002 Focus SVT (showroom stock) with the folks at Speed Ventures. Turned in consistent 2 minute laps. It would have been very cool to see the telemetry data. But sort of like Matt, I was preserving my car for the ride home to SoCal.
This was great! Do have to say that Premat also used 3rd gear going up the hill, which probably adds a decent amount of time too.
i'd love to try this myself
Awesome
awesome
Graphics take me back to Grand Turismo LOVE THEM
I kind of love this video, feels like i'm in a racing video game lol great education tho!
You seemed to be quite a bit faster at the last corner and your driving style around it seemed much different. I think something similar was in the BBC's Top Gear track. There was a specific corner "Stig" had a different take compared to the F1 drivers. Wish they gave us the telemetry there also! Awesome stuff! Bravo!
As a brazilian I'm really diggin that Senna poster in the background
You just convinced me in buying an AIM SOLO :P
Except the gears that everyone has noticed, Alex is using allot more of the track at corner entry and especially at corner exits, also he is trail braking into the corners with acc. pedal not completely off.
Anyway, good time Matt, it's easy for us to stay at PC and judge!:))
Matt, you've got the corkscrew down pretty good.
Agreed. When he went through on the first session I was very impressed. I would have been shitting myself
The corkscrew comes very easy to me. Turn 2 and 9 are where I really need to improve
Spot on. The corkscrew isn't nearly as technical as people make it out to be, it's just scary at first because of the crest before the first apex and the blindness of it as you're turning in, as long as you point the nose of your car at the 2nd tree it's pretty easy. Turn 2 was the most difficult turn for me to get the hang of, and turn 9 I'm still not sure I have the most ideal approach because it's such a long sweeping turn. I need to pick some better brake/turn-in reference points.
Good stuff Matt. Turn 6 requires a whole lot of confidence so I don't blame you for braking so hard there. You should invest in some Sim racing equipment. iRacing has taught me tons about how to hit your marks and choosing optimal lines. I've never had the chance to get in a real car or race track but seeing as how you are getting on racetracks more frequently, you should give iRacing a shot. Keep up the good work
I don't like sim racing for anything besides learning the general track layout. I would much rather just be in a car and get real seat
Time. Fortunately for someone like me, that's a reasonable position.
Wow i replayed the clip from 10:25 like five times... i couldn't believe it. Balls to the walls.
Alex does not let it hit the limiter as well. Maybe keeping in the power band for a little longer. Great job Matt.
Alex Premat is great.
Haha dude, way higher rpm, allowed to go through the left hander at full throttle using 3rd and using more of the track on the last corner. No wonder he was quicker, little bit unfair to not let you guys give it the full beans. I thought you did a good job there (not a racing driver at all btw so just my opinion) seems braking later and scrubbing more speed off when braking would get ya some more time. You seem to have similar braking patterns on each attempt whereas his are a lot sharper in deceleration so his brake modulation is a bit more aggressive without locking them. Like I say could be chattin utter tripe there as I've only done one car limits day and been on the odd track haha! Thanks for the video, great watch!
WTB: 1 huge pair of talent balls
Alex shifted into 3rd where you were told not to and it looks like he's also left-foot braking. Regardless, he was pretty aggro in certain spots, like the cork, where you weren't!
i use the predictive lap mode on the the lap timer i use . it tell you how much +or - you are evry 50 ft on your fastest corners put together. its super important to unwind the wheel when you exiting a corner. if you don't you pinch off the corner and lose time. as you unwind slowly depress the gas and unwind more ..
wrong about the the sound meter are the short run up to turn 6. the part you mention is where they meatball you if you didt pass on that meter. you lift right before thew bridge on turn 6 . its a littls sound hut on the right hand side.
You ever come out to the east coast to do reviews Matt?
So why did Alex get to take the turn in third gear???
I did countless laps at Laguna Seca... on iRacing ;)
remember to lift and coast.
very under rated technique
Hey Matt,
What do you think of Pirelli P Zero Nero GT tires? Thanks.
I notice Alex uses a lot less braking. Respect to you Mat for worrying about not crashing the car :)
Matt - Planning on doing any kind of open wheel stuff in a similar vein to this? Would love to see how you do in something like a Formula Atlantic/Continental/3000, etc.
I hate open wheel cars. They are very uncomfortable for me and scare the shit out of me.
A 13 minute plug. Amazing.
How much gran turismo did you play as a kid. I played a lot. The turn up the hill is a lift off gas, but don't brake lol. Cool video
when was this filmed? is that smoke or clouds? there is a huge fire in monterey county right now. (im locked in carmel valley)
really nice video man, congratulations!! Don't take me bad, but don't forget that is maybe also a hundred pounds of weight difference there, haha, but still, nice video !!!
Not sure if the car in the thumbnail was a Aston Martin or a Ford.
Neither. It's the car I was driving, with a Ford grille decal on it
+TheSmokingTire Is it a sponsorship thing or why it has Ford decals as it isn't based on a production vehicle and it has a Renault engine?
They have all different decals from BMW to Audi to Mercedes, Peugeot, Renault, and Ford. They will make the car look like whatever you like. It's not a sponsorship thing, it's a bit of fun. I asked them to make it look like a 78 Chrysler Cordoba, but they said they would do that only if I paid extra.
" I asked them to make it look like a 78 Chrysler Cordoba, but they said they would do that only if I paid extra." Hahaha
On your car was the brake light thing broken? I didn't see it light up like on alex car. Either war that looks like an awesome experience.
The brake sensor in the AIM system was not recording on mine for some reason
