  • Can you winter stealth camp? YES or need too? Well no, they have a few motorhome spots in the world famous Rovaniemi Santa Claus Village in Finland. The Arctic snow camping Vanlife Adventure continues in my self build ford transit campervan in Lapland. I am taking my van for another winter on the Nordic at the extreme cold only heated by my Chinese diesel Heater. My friend and I then taking my Tiny home on wheel over to Kiruna in Sweden to climb Luossavaara in winter via the mid night sun route and the van gets snow and ice covered on the drive.

    Thanks for sharing some personal time with your friends.
    I am now re-rewatching your build videos, and each time I notice something I missed the first time. (THEY ARE GREAT)
    Today, you mentioned it was -18 and the grey water tank was a little blocked.
    In the previous video when describing that you move items off the floor as it gets below freezing, does your waste water from shower room freeze as it enters the sediment settling box/tank.
    You also had two 15mm pipes that you cut the foam away in the flooring, do they freeze too.
    Do I assume this was recorded in the last week or so, as Santa's village looked, well.. Open, but quiet.
    Hope you have a wonderful time.
    Take care.

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  Před rokem +3

      Yes Santa’s Village were still in full Christmas swing even though a a few weeks after Christmas, but without the crowds, however, definitely still places.
      I don’t often show me with other people in my videos, but I’ll be thought it be interesting to try something different.
      As for the grey waste, I generally choose not to use or make grey waste on this trip. You are correct and there are two pipes in the Floor. One is the primary cold water feed whilst you’re there was a back up. I assumed they were going to freeze so for this trip. I’ve emptied the cold water tanks and have moved to temporary 10 L water tanks into the heated side cupboard.
      as the shower is a recirculating system, no grey water comes from it, unless I choose to empty the hot tank / shower tank into it and it that is the case I would do it at a place where I can drain the gray tank immediately whilst the hot water is still hot

    Tha Santa village is a funny place to visit although it's made for taking money away from tourists. Last time I was there I a spent night on BestPark camper park that is located just on the other side of E75 from that Santa village. I travel with my Sunlight motorhome which is also based on Ford Transit but older model than yours. It's from 2008.
    Let's not tell anyone that the arctic circle in the Santa village is actually fake :) The real arctic circle is about 2km norther, but the village was built there where it is because that actual latitude is just swamp near to that place. Actually the runway of Rovaniemi airport crosses the real arctic circle.

    I’ve been wondering about adblue mate. Does your tank ever freeze? Have you had any issues?
    I’ve been looking at Sprinter’s, there rated to -11 far as I can tell, but it has a tank heater (not sure if that’s the max with element on?) but surely can’t be good to have that on In temperatures all the time like you have off the starter battery!
    Whats the tank like on Yeti? Im definitely going in search of weather like this so important to check out now imo 👍🏼 I like the mk8 like yours Jumbo L4 transit , would be my only other choice over a sprinter

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  Před rokem +2

      Adblue freezes at -11c you are correct . But in my van it’s not “important or required” for the engine to run. So it just remains frozen I presume. But if I was to run out of it run out or get low then I get a count down of miles till the engine will electronically not be allowed to start. Because the adblue is frozen the level in the adblue tank doesn’t go down.

    • @ant_hart
      @ant_hart Před rokem +1

      @@MispronouncedAdventures That’s very interesting I didn’t know Fords worked like that, do you know if it’s the same for Mercedes? Do you see many Sprinters on your travels? I must admit it’s got me concerned because I want to do the same style of trips you do yourself but if the van won’t work in those temperatures I may have to look at other options.
      Do you think having your engine heater helps with this? I realise it’s a separate tank/system. I’m even thinking about heating pads etc now for adblue tanks!ha
      My girlfriend thinks I’m taking things to far but I’d rather find out and work through any potential issues now than once it’s too late.

      @@ant_hart engine pre heaters for here is 100% needed! Otherwise on super cold days it will never get engine start ( or at least a lot of effort and wear on it ) . You seen all the normal vans you would see in the uk up here, just they will have factory modifications for this environment.

    • @ant_hart
      @ant_hart Před rokem +1

      @@MispronouncedAdventures the engine pre heater is definitely on the list of mods, I wouldn’t even consider a trip like that without one, i saw and heard how your engine was that time you had problems with starting.
      I probably didn’t explain correctly, I meant do you think a pre heater would aid in warming the adblue system too as well as the coolant? But being 2 separate systems I think the answer would be no.
      I guess I could run a coolant pipe off the pre heater and ‘wrap it round the adblue tank’ for example but that might be a silly idea!ha
      I guess it’s hard to say and I don’t really know anyone to ask with a sprinter that takes it to places and extremes of temperature like you do.

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  Před rokem +1

    Stealth camping has almost no meaning in Finland. We have the so called "every mans rights" that allows you to pass or even camp in private property. There are subtle things though. No camping near the yard where someone lives. (near = if you can see a house someone lives in, it is probably not ok, if a hill blocks the view, it probably is not unless a large flat terrain)
    No open fire without permission from the land owner. You can pick up all the berries or mushrooms or fallen tree branches you want. You can make no harm or cannot break a tree branch from a tree nor hunt on others property etc. No disturbance, no trashing. Basically the "leave no trace" style and it's ok. Camping in a parked van is generally also ok unless you drive it to someones yard. Just being there is generally allowed everywhere. You can even use a private built road occationally (but not regularly). You cannot drive a motor vehicle outside the road without permit from land owner.
    (There are exemptions like military zones and what not, of course)
    Basically, if you cause harm, it's a no-no. If not and it wont't bother anyone, it is allowed by law.
    This is a very untypical law as far as I know. A right to do stuff even if someone else owns the property.
    Pinjan käpy is mostly a decoration although pine seeds are edible. I think there are probably rarely or few edible seeds on those and you'll probably find the edible ones (if there are any) along nuts. It is a kind of nutty seed.

    • @MispronouncedAdventures

      Great comment, thank you. “ stealth camping “ is very much a popular phrase amongst UK use given a variety of our laws prohibiting access. Unless so in Scotland, as the laws are very different.
