Whether or not this choir had "soul" as defined by any individual, I found it to be beautifully sung and with sincerity and respect, which is all that can be reasonably expected from any singer or choir / chorus. We all would do well to show respect and try to have appreciation for all styles and arrangements of religious songs, since they display that there are many of differing beliefs who are capable of seeing and recognizing the beauty and intent of the original writer and/or composer, and wish to share the message to more people in the world.

Why do they sing "rock-a my soul"? What does it mean? Would "rock my soul" mean the same? Never heard about "rock-a"
It is a mantra meant to indoctrinate the mind into submissive mush. It is devoid of meaning but amounts to collective groupthink obedience.
It is a simple song has nothing to do with mantra or indoctrination....It is a song home going. It is stating you want your SOUL to be cradled and (verb) rocked like a child of God. Submission is not shameful unless you yourself claim to be a GOD .... of some sort.
It is an arrangement of an African American spiritual. Many times slaves would insert an "a" between words to help fit their dilacte and syncopated rhythms i.e. "and I don't want you to leave-a me behind " " in-a dat great gittin up morning."
