My father was stage manager for the Broadway play and actually painted the portrait of Harvey and Dowd used in the play. He did it from a photo of him standing in for Harvey and I have the two versions on my wall as I sit here. James Stewart signed the photo "To Don with my thanks and high regard".
I can't imagine how hard it must be to not only memorize an entire play, but to do it over and over again for 6 months and make the last performance as good as all the others!
I was extremely lucky to get to do this play in High School, back in the ‘70s. I’m sure my performance was not comparable to my idol, James Stewart, but I remember it fondly. It was hard work, but it definitely taught me a lot about the things that matter in life, although it has taken me all of the intervening years to truly understand.
I love the idea of Harvey. But, for me, this movie is such a piece of art thanks to the Elwood character. James Stewart's acting was phenomenal. The open-heartedness, purity, and naiveté of Mr Dowd were just amazing.
And..where ever you are? Jimmy? Thanks for bringing to us all..Ms.Chase's beloved character of the drunken but sweet and kindly millionaire"Elwood P.Dowd".
How lovely! Never knew it was a play first. One of my mom's fave movies, and as a cool side note Pookahs! are real in Irish folklore, they can look like anything they want to. Wonderful writing and characters. Elwood was great. What a warm fuzzy.
We saw Harvey on Broadway . The invisible white rabbet got a 15 minute standing ovation !

I saw the portrait used for the Frank Fay run today online. Harvey looks a lot more sinister!
How wonderful! That is truly valuable, especially the story!
Lovely thing for you to be part of
Way Cool!

This was the cutest movie, everyone thought he was crazy! But, the people went along with it 🐰

Yes! Those exact qualities and the warmth that Dowd exudes are why I absolutely adore this film!
If it wasn't for one of my teachers in middle school I would have never heard of Harvey.. its by far one of my favorite movies
