- In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, in one of the most enjoyable episodes to date, I'm joined by Daniel and Steven from @TheCatholicBrothers to talk about their journey out of and back into the Catholic faith.
Raised in a devout Catholic home, Daniel and Steven unpack exactly what drew them out of the Catholic faith and into Evangelical Christianity, then Anglicanism, and finally back into full communion with the Catholic Church.
It's an amazing story that touches on some of the beautiful experiences of Evangelical Christianity, the need for an authority structure in Anglicanism, and, eventually, the authentic witness of the Early Church Fathers for the truth of Catholic Christianity.
This episode is just jam-packed and Daniel and Steven are fantastic storytellers with an excellent story to tell.

As a son, grandson, nephew and cousin of sincere and faithful Baptist Pastors I have been a Baptist for more than 50 years. Four years ago, in a Baptist bookstore, I bought a book about the Church Fathers. I had never felt confortable in a church where Church history was ignored and despised, and proudly so. As I read the Fathers' primary sources I realized that they were Catholic as far as the Eucharist, Sacraments, Papacy, Canon, Mary, Saints or relics were concerned. I had no choice but to become Catholic, which I did last October 9th 2022.

My wife left the Church for 30 years. She didn’t know squat She left to get the Holy Ghost, and probably for boys, cause there are hardly any Catholics here in Alabama. Slim Pickens I guess. But after 30 years she invited me to Mass, and here we are! Now our grandkids are Cradle Catholics!!!! ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊

My Priest told me that when Luther was an old man his servant reported that he used to sit by his fireside saying over and over "Oh Martin. What have you done"? His servant later became a catholic, then a Priest, and finally an Abbot, so his word is trustworthy.
That's a fascinating tale! Do you recall his servant's name?
I have always been a Catholic since birth and am proud of it. I have been studying other beliefs and I think I will always be a Catholic until the end of my days. How I so love this Church. In this beautiful Church I feel very peaceful although it has been attacked from many sides but it still stands strong. I am almost 70 now.

The energy I usually spent "figuring it out" is now spent working on becoming a Saint.
Our Priests are very few and overworked with two and three churches to look after. Pray for more good holy Priests.
I pray that my children who turned away, have as much resilience and seriousness to follow that path

My son began losing his way in college.
Following college he had a Jewish friend who went into the Navy, and had a conversion while on the ship.
His conversion sparked a lot of conversation and helped my son find his way back.
Give your son time, and never stop praying for him! ⚘️

Most people leave because of misunderstandings and poor Catholic Christian education (like we worship Mary or the worst one that we’re not Christian ) bla bla , if you get Jesus at the center then add the rest like Mary and the saints to it is how the education should of been but most were backwards, it’s easier to understand that way for me , Trent Horn and the Bible study by Jeff Cavins and this podcast and others like it helped me stay catholic I almost left
I hear you! My older son has influenced my younger son to wander away. But for my kids, it's not a Relationship-with-Jesus Thing. I wish it were! I keep praying for them to actually experience Jesus. But for them, it's ideological. They're convinced that Catholicism isn't "based." They think Dyerite Orthodoxy is "based" and Islam is "based," but Catholicism is "cucked." Oy, don't get me started. St Monica, pray for us!
The 'First Five Hundred Years' series on The Catholic Brothers Channel is astonishingly good. I learned so much, I could almost smell Isreal! Having historical context, which the series provides in spades, for me brought the characters in the Gospels and their actions/reactions alive in a much more tangible way. The idea of the Church as 'Isreal' and the continuity of salvation history is so well articulated by the two brothers. I used to have a kind of 'punctuation' mark in my mind around the fall of ancient Isreal and the birth of Christianity, which of course there is...but it's only a comma not a period lol. Understanding how diverse and expectant the Jewish peoples beliefs were during the time of Jesus gives so much more perspective. I'm on my second listen to the series, and found it a wonderful accompaniment to 'Bible in a year'. So grateful that these two lads went to the effort to share their journey ❤

Yes, true Hebrew Believers in Moses were heavily persecuted by those who also persecuted The Prophets and the Apostles! There is no racial difference for anyone, but Judaism is a false religion for anyone. I pray for the conversion of all Jews and all those who hold to false religions!

Was just wondering. Have you ever met an EX Catholic that knew the teachings of the Church? I have yet to meet one. My wife’s family left the church and troll my channel, and they know less about Catholicism than my cat.

Seriously, though, I've never met one. Leaving the Catholic Church is *always* an exercise of emotion. It nearly always happens in one of a few forms - the saddest of which is the balding, mid-life crisis dude who ditches his family and becomes evangelical because the Church won't grant him the annulment fast enough. Then, there's the well-meaning but dreadfully ill-informed proud parents of a gay teen, or the revolutionary twenty-something who thinks the Church doesn't do enough for the poor (because they've never heard of Rerum Novarum)... more political than personal, whatever the case may be. Last but not least is the guy from high school who married a Southern baptist chick or whatever, and he never cared that much in the first place. I'd say a good 95%+ of ex-Catholics fall into one of those three categories. You never hear from anybody as impressive as Scott Hahn or Jimmy Akin or Keith Nester or John Bergsma or Trent Horn or Steve Ray or David Anders... It just doesn't exist among ex-Catholics who join Protestant "churches." In fact, the best ex-Catholics I know are the ones who have lost faith in God completely but are still trying to be good people. I pray for them all the time, because there's still a glimmer of light there in most cases.
A phrase I heard on the channel Divine Mercy from Fr Alar: "you don't leave Christ because of Judas". No matter how bad the Church gets or appears to get, anyeay, you don't leave His Church.
Basically it's a "I was such a typical know-it-all silly teen" story. I think many of us can relate to it.

Protestant converting this was great. Invite to the mass is great,the mass needs to be explained, once I understood the mass I couldn’t believe the beauty in the Mass and then the Rosary changed everything. Cant wait to take the Eucharist ❤️🙏🙏🙏.
Israel was the chosen people by God. And how many times did they commit the worst sins!?!? And yet God’s promise was fulfilled amongst them. I see the Catholic Church as the new Israel and Christ’s promise of the gates of hell not prevailing against it. It has stood for 2000 years besides all the sins committed in it. But as Israel has its Prophets (good fruits), we have our Saints and the Prophets. God Bless!!

I'm a cradle Catholic. I thought I was alright but the fact I'm not as there's so much I don't know about the more complexity in the reality of the truths of how to prepare myself to enter into God Fathers Kingdom. The teaching of the church is so rich and very blessing and therefore I am enlightened when watching podcasts like these.

@58:45 of the video, I was this kind of Catholic. Majority of Catholics you see in mass are like this and some even receiving the communion in a state of mortal sin. I pick and choose which to believe in the Catholic faith. It will never work; you have to truly believe in everything what the Catholic teaches or you don't, there is no middle ground. I feel very liberated upon following all the teachings of the Catholic church. You won't feel the full power of the Catholic faith if you are not in a state of grace. You have to be in the state of grace to receive the communion and receive the full benefits of the church.

I am on the verge of returning to the Catholic church. For the past 12+ years I have been away and living in other traditions. I attend on some occasions a really good Anglican communion however, I am called back to the Catholic church. I am finding that difficult but I have to do it. I ask for your prayers to take the next leap of faith. Thank you. Finding a good confessor is a struggle right now so I am reluctant to go. This is an amazing and very timely podcast for me. I haven't finished listening yet, but I just have to comment: Henry VIII's destruction of the monasteries did it for me as well. I was brought up as an Episcopalian, I loved my church, I loved Jesus, and I was furious at my mother when she became Catholic. I made fun of Catholicism and I "shot down" all her explanations. I have been Catholic now for 45 years, and as of this month I have been driving 2 hours each way to attend an Anglican Ordinariate Church. The beauty and reverence of the Liturgy makes me weep! This is what the Anglican church is supposed to be.

Why are u going to an Anglican Ordiniarate Church? Seems like u can't quite leave Anglicanism. It is insulting to Catholicism when Anglicans still want to keep to their "traditions". The Ordiniarate is not more special than Catholicism.
"This is what he Anglican church was supposed to be"? No! Anglicanism only came into being after the Oxford Movement in the 1800s. Before that going back to Henry VIII it was rabid Protestantism which then evolved into what it is now in the 1800s. All the robes they wear now are all copied from Catholicism. In Henry VIII's time Protestant "bishops" wore white robes , a black stole, and a black tri-cornered flat hat. They had no Altars - smashed by order of Cromwell.

It is as much a part of the Catholic church as the Ukrainian Catholics, the Armenian Catholics, and all of the other 23 national rites that are part of The Catholic Church-- of which the Roman Catholic Church is only the largest. The Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter was established in 2012 by the Pope. The Latin Rite is only one of many legitimate "rites" that are one hundred percent approved of by the Holy See. Why do you think we are called "Catholics"? It means "universal".

I did the same I left the church for ten years with my family yet I still had my kids make communion and conformation) because I couldn’t totally give my heart to the church I was at ( Assemblies of GOD ) started with ( first baptist ). Bible study Friday nights all day at church Sunday and Wednesday nights . Loved it loved the music love the people ( for a while ) . They would alway bash Catholics , it came out in conversations , it was preached , and I always felt like someone was talking about a family member . Now mind you 90 % of these people were X CATHOLICS . I wish I knew then what I know now for those Bible studies . Anyway one day while waiting to go to the hospital in NYC I walked into Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. To sit and wait till my time . ( I have a rare disease and in the hospital a lot ). Anyway I had not been inside a church only for said communion and conformations . And it’s not a cathedral. I walked in and I felt like something came over me I couldn’t stand up I needed to sit down I was crying like I heard someone died . Balling my eyes out . I always felt like something was missing I knew I couldn’t totally feel at home in a Protestant church . Something was missing . I had no idea what that was now I know it was the Eucharist and confession. But I wanted and miss that small feeling like GOD IS GOD not my best friend my buddy my pal . And that’s what I was feeling like kneel ! Kneel at the feet of your lord and I needed to be still and small. So I decided to see once and for all what I might be leaving before I left . I know my story is all over the place but I did the research I watched EWTN and found MARCUS GRODI the journey home loves that show . Mother Angelica , that is where I stumbled on to Scott Hahn , and then I heard Tim Staples . Patrick Madrid , I read all his books all the books you could find on conversion and apologetics . I never went back to the ASSEMBLY OF GOD . the people I was hanging out with over there thought I was crazy and NOT SAVED . But they also believed once saved always saved go figure .
Shoot I only subscribe to channels where the hosts don't wear hats. JK! I'm a big hat guy myself. Jokes aside, big fan of the Catholic Brothers! Their series on the first 500 years is fantastic. Thanks for the great lineup you curate! Your channel reminds me of the Journey Home on EWTN.

I’m a Gen X this is allot of our stories horrible CCD an no knowledge of Jesus, bad religious education , it was backwards teaching we talk to much of Mary an the Saints and no Jesus when it should of been Jesus first then add on Mary and the saints, i am catholic still but almost left from the bad education but studied myself and did a Bible study and stayed Catholic

He is like all other Protestants who leave the Catholic Church. He wanted to remain in gluttony and lust instead of fight against it.
Evangelicals offer Catholics the concept that you "can sin" and be a great evangelical.
Where we offer the solution to When you sin (confession and repentence), but we don't ever ever ever say you "can sin."
The answer is "no, you can not sin." "But I fell in to sin again, don't worry, we have the answer for that too - go and sin no more!"

I think if these guys were more honest looking back wouldn't they say there is some kind of sin they wanted to commit and evagelicals said "don't worry, that's not sin." Or "it's okay if you sin."
As opposed to "it is NEVER okay when you sin, but we have the cure for when/if you sin!"

Hey you guys, welcome Home! Are you aware that there is a whole East IN the Catholic Church? The Liturgy is like Orthodox, but CATHOLIC! I am blessed that in my area there are 5 different Eastern Rites from which to choose. Ruthenian Byzantine is the best. :-)

What do you brothers think of One for Israel and their conversions? The Catholic Church does not seem to reach Jews the way evangelicals do. Also evangelicals seem to convert people so effectively which is why the Pope created the Synod on the Amazon.. to try to reach them as well as the evangelicals and also maybe allow priests to marry.
Priests MAY be allowed to marry if in very remote lonely areas but it would a rarity.
I heard Michael Voris say the other day that currently for every one Roman Catholic convert there are about six Catholics that walk away. And of those that walk away about half join conservative Protestant churches. Do you think there's any truth to that?
No.there is no truth on his claim. The reason he's saying that is because...he's not doing any " gaining souls".All he does and good of doing is criticizing the BAD decision the Pope made/makes and he never evangelized the wandering and lost.

When I went through RCIA, just a few years ago. There were only 2 of us in that class. In the next year, our RCIA numbers jumped from 2 to 28, with another 4 who couldn't come every week . Catholicism is growing by leaps and bounds!❤❤😊😊

Always wrestling with no rest? My experience as a Protestant is totally unlike theirs. I rest in the word of God, not some institution. That seems to be the denominator with folks like the Catholic Brothers - this underlying need for an institution. I guess I just don’t need that sort of thing because that’s not what I ultimately put my faith in.
I don’t think it’s fair to psychologize our point. It is acceptable for your experience to be different, and I know precisely what you mean when you say that you rest in the Word of God as a Protestant. Been there as well. I’m not talking about heavenly Consolation in the soul. We experienced that at many junctures in our Protestant experience. Even genuine encounters with Christ, if you will..
Conversion is a movement of head, heart, and will. The “wrestling with no rest” refers primarily to the dimension of the head (which in turn, disrupts the heart and shakes the will). Protestantism was not satisfying the intellectual demand, no matter how much we would wrestle through all the various views and interpretations of Scripture and divergent theologies that emerged from the Reformation onward. Anglicanism especially has an identity crisis that it delivers to its children, and wrestling with that identity crisis becomes quite tiring for folks who are looking for doctrinal consistency and unity of the faith.
I think most people with an open mind understood the point we were making there. Sorry if it came off as offensive; was not intended to be.

But going by what was said in the video it definitely seemed like both of you were searching for an institution, or at least it seemed you were not at rest until you could answer the question of what is the correct institution. Would that be unfair of me to say?
@@theosophicalwanderings7696 not quite. We were looking for a Body, and bodies are real, tangible. If a Body has the qualities of an institution, then so be it. But I was searching for my Lord’s Bride, so that I could rest in her arms and lay against the bosom of my Savior. If the Church is the “pillar and foundation of Truth,” then I think it behooves all Christian men to earnestly find her, since we want to love the things that Christ loves. If Christ loves His Bride, and shed His blood for her, and gave her the authority on earth to bind and to loose and to be the herald of the Gospel and the Guardian of the sacraments, I think it is not only necessary, but perfectly natural, for a Christ-loving man to search day and night until he finds her.
A relationship with Christ without the Church, while perhaps beginning on the right foot, will eventually become deficient, because the relationship is divorced from the proper context within which Christ Himself wants it to blossom and grow. The Christ of reality can quickly become the Christ of our own mind if we don’t situate our relationship with Him within the guardrails of apostolic faith and tradition. Christ willed that the Church would perpetuate His Presence on earth as he serves as High Priest before the Father. He didn’t leave us as orphans with a book. He not only left us the sacred writings, but He provided a means of properly understanding and interpreting them; He left us His own Bride, inspired by the Holy Spirit, to reconcile the world to Himself.
To divorce “the word of God” from “some institution” (a somewhat cynical and certainly unbiblical description of the Church, I must say) is simply the intellectual underpinnings of a 16th century novelty- a “tradition of men.” The apostles, in obedience to Christ, established a Church (with sacraments, hierarchy, rites and ceremonies, and sacred texts) not a series of sects and schools. If the world is to be reconciled through a vast array of sectarian movements, then I dare say that the New Covenant cannot possibly be something better than the Old. If Christ’s life, death, and resurrection only effected the proliferation of amorphous schools and movements, then I dare say it would be quite hard to believe that He is Who He claimed to be. But, thanks be to God, He did establish a single Body, through which the world is to be reconciled to Him, and through Him to the Father.

Anglicanism is Protestant and does not have a priesthood. Cromwell decreed that they would have Ministers of the Gospel as their "pastors". This was because Cromwell could not find a catholic Bishop to "ordain" any "priests" in the "new church" that they were establishing in the reign of Elizabeth I. So, there is NO priesthood in Anglicanism. Read THE HISTORY OF ENGLAND
:THE TUDORS VOL II by Peter Ackroyd. Also the bedrock of Anglicanism is the 39 ARTICLES and Article 31 says THE MASSES FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEAD ARE A BLASPHEMOUS FABLE AND A DECEIT. Since Anglicans have no priesthood it follows that their mass is FAKE. It is not possible to be an Anglican and to believe that the Mass and the 39 Articles are both true - because they contradict each other!

Real, solid Catholicism does not exist in my city of 30,000. 2 churches. 1 Newman Ctr. I could go on. After trying 2x, I left. I cannot go back. It got to the point that I was leaving Mass angry. Couple that with this 'Pope' (who shut down your TLM) and the large number of homosexual priests, (the movie Spotlight) I just couldn't take it any more.
The "Church" is everybody who is baptised. It is not the Vatican which is the international Headquarters of the church.

Sorry, guys. I just can't relate to Catholics looking at Evangelicals and seeing anything worth having at all. It's always been a joke to me, and it always will be. Don't get me wrong. I pray for their salvation, and I do recognize much of their devotion to be sincere; but really, Sola Fide? Sola Scriptura? It's all so intellectually vapid and spiritually vacant.

And used every protestant misunderstanding (lie) like you didn’t have a relationship with Jesus, worshipping Mary, opposed communion of the Saints, even said Luther was right about the Church being corrupt without supporting Catholic side. Why Excuse me? Luther was a heretic. How did you miss the truth? I grew up on the Baltimore Catechism in my CCD classes. Each of the first 3 books of the have Chapters on every thing you missed and in particular chapters entitled “Sins and Its Kinds”. And repentance, confession and salvation is woven throughout the rest of the books. Are you telling us you had no clue about the necessity for confession, sorrow for sin, the Act of Contrition, absolution, sanctifying grace and why you had to be free of mortal sin to receive holy communion. Come on! Those are all basic tenants of the Church. Basically I got tired of listening to your negativity about Catholicism. I’m glad you’re back but figure out a way to express it instead of criticizing the Church for the first 25 minutes and then intermittently throughout your interview.
