  • Angie and I canoed 20 miles down the Buffalo River to celebrate a friend's birthday. We started at the Woolum campground, camped on a gravel bar just past Baker Ford, and ended our float at Gilbert the next day. This was our first experience camping while floating, it was a great time and we hope to do another trip like this soon.
We rented a canoe from the Gilbert General Store where we received great service; they had us park on their parking lot and shuttled us up to Woolum.
I believe the water level was around 4.5 feet at the Highway 65 gauge. As you can see there was a mix of some current and slow moving pools.
If you have any questions for planning your own trip feel free to ask, and if you enjoyed we ask that you hit the thumbs up and subscribe to our channel. Thanks for watching!

    Very nice, thanks for sharing!
My brother and I did 20 miles from southern Iowa into northern Missouri awhile back. It was three days and two nights on a slower river than the Buffalo, but it was fantastic.

Thanks I love the Buffalo River... The last river left in the US that does NOT have a dam somewhere along it though it was almost dammed and turned into a massive reservoir and saved by an activist i cannot remember his name sadly and the group otherwise this would not exist. Imagine what they would have done to that man today..? Sad. In '98 I was awarded the artist in residence position at Buffalo River by the National Park service for the fall.. That year there was very little rain and the river is always low in the fall anyway so it was EXTREMELY LOW in someplace no water above ground!! That was intense i did several drawings of the rock formations, hiked like crazy.. found a ton of bamboo from Japanese internment camps.. Wrote a song ARKANSAS it is posted on my channel also shows many of the pics and artworks i made.. a few of my works are supposed to be hanging in the park office i hope it is still open there were some amazing people working there in the park system.. I have only been able to get back once about seven years later.. Here is a link to the song about my experience if you want to check it out czcams.com/video/bnYGce4THNE/video.html

Very interesting, I'll check the song out. I believe the person you are thinking of is Dr. Neil Compton. I'm so thankful it's not a lake; we live in Branson, MO area where the White River is dammed in a couple places, I often wonder what it looks like wild and flowing free.

@@WanderingBlock Thanks for his name.. Our family lived on the Kansas Missouri border Lenexa, KS in the 80's spent a lot of time in Missouri then, especially Lake Jacoma we spent a ton of time picnics n fishing, also fishing some of the other reservoirs.. Being from the Great Lakes area we would go anywhere with water.. The artist in residence was one of the deepest experiences i ever had.

@@frankjamesenglishartist no problem! We love to get to the water too. However, we just got back from southern Utah last month and the dessert is pretty cool too!
I love the Great Lakes but have never done any hiking there. I've seen som pictures and videos of some amazing trails up there tho.

planning on doing this exact same float next week with my 4 boys and a friend. We're going to have someone shuttle the truck down to Gilbert for us. Is there plenty of parking there for a truck/trailer? We could get off at Grinder's Ferry, but we really want to spend the 2nd night on Shine Eye Beach.

There's a pretty good amount of parking at Gilbert but it can be get really busy and I don't remember if overnight parking there is a lot.
I recommend giving a call to Gilbert General Store, they have a parking lot real close to the river access. We have used them for a shuttle a couple times and they've been great.

About what time did you put in, and get off the water?

I can't really remember to be honest. I want to say we started around 10 am the first day then finished early in the afternoon the second day. We went at a pretty slope pace since we are with a big group
