A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night And The Melancholic Beauty Of Gothic Horror

  • The 2014 film A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is maybe one of the greatest examples of a modern-day gothic horror story, and one of my favorite films of the last decade. It’s a film that ironically exists within the decaying bones of a genre that places most of its stories within crumbling castles of bygone ages. Except, instead of simply borrowing the tropes and settings of the gothic stories of the past, it modernizes their themes and shadowy corridors, giving new life to the genre that inspired it. But what makes this Iranian-American vampire film truly great is not only how it breathes new life into a dormant cinematic subgenre, but how it highlights one of the more ignored features that make gothic media so appealing for so many people, myself included. Like in other horror stories, death is present and frightening, and it’s meant to be a sobering reminder of our mortality, to not take ourselves too seriously. However, in addition to that, gothic horror presents us with ruminations on life that express a kind of melancholic beauty alongside the horror. It’s a feature of the subgenre that’s equally comforting, and simultaneously terrifying.

Hey everybody, happy holidays. Wanted to do a video about one of my favorite movies in the last decade. The next video has already entered production and it's about the anime "Carole and Tuesday", I've already watched the show and enjoyed it greatly, but the research has begun, the subject matter might not be what you think ;D. After that, I want to do a video all about my favorite movie of all time "Ed Wood" and the nature of mediocrity and will. These should be fun to create, can't wait to share it all with you.
Once again happy holidays everybody, stay safe, share the love.

Because it is not political and because it doesn't pit one race of people against one another, and that would have been an easy road to take seeing that these are Iranian vampires and there is obviously always a lot of tension between Iran and the west (i.e. USA) and particularly because Ana Lily Amanpour the Director is Iranian American. But Ms. Amanpour doesn't go for the 'low hanging fruit' type themes i.e. Racism, Classism, People against people etc. or any of the typical STANDARD GREIVANCE/Hatred type stories that are so overdone and divisive) Consequently those are the same topics that the so called 'elites, scholars& media high brows' are drawn to. Again, major respect to Ana Lily Amanpour for just simply making a truly original and wonderfully cool vampire story/movie in without question is the most over-done Horror sub-genre of all (i.e. Vampires) Peace to all.

A truly great and very interesting movie, I'm so glad that I finally watched it a few weeks ago. And this is a great essay on its themes.

It was shot in Taft. Not Los Angeles

Not knowing her name throughout the whole film gives it life for a sequel in my opinion. I hope many people agree especially the director and creator, Ana.
    Sincerely,

The video is lagging. And it's not a streaming problem. At the beginning at 00:02 to 00:03 it hangs for a quarter second and again 4 seconds later it does it again. Very bad. Not sure if this is your original video? I bet most people turn it off at that point.
Edit: Happens again at 14s... you wouldn't believe how annoying that is.

I just checked and it doesn't happen to me so I'm going to assume it's your internet or something, wouldn't have released it if it did something like that.

@@MediaIsMythic Ok, that's good to know. It's 100% not my internet. Because this video is the only video that it happened to. So there are two things that could be happening here. Either youtube does that on purpose to downgrade this video and viewership, or the video is simply cached on a server far away and not yet one near me, or the video is cached on a slower more busy server than most other videos I watch.
Though I wonder why it keeps happening. Like when I go back to the start of the video the lag shouldn't happen again because the video should be cached in the browser, yet it happens again at exactly the same time 3 times in a row. I wonder how that can be an internet problem. That would mean the video is flushed right the second it played and when I jump back 10 seconds it's reloading everything from the server...
Edit: Okay today happened exactly the same, a lag at the same time in the video like yesterday. So I opened my capture software to capture it and now the lag doesn't happen anymore. I hate when that happens. It's like that playthrough of a game I had once where everytime I couldn't finish the level because of a bug. So I started recording my playthrough of that level to send the clip to the devs. And that time the bug didn't happen and I was able to solve the level for the first time and the recording was useless.
Edit2: Now it's even lagging more than yesterday. But I give up. It's the only video where this happens to me.

Ok I've uploaded it here and I will delete it in 24h because I don't want to steal your content. You can see the video is cached and it still lags. Maybe it's the compression type you used when uploaded the video. I have no idea. But again it's the only video lagging for me:

Thank you for this insightful essay on Gothic Horror in general and A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night in particular.

One of the earliest (short) movies featured a person turning into a bat.
