Rebinding an old book at home

- Yet another bookbinding video journal of me binding with the only difference I tried something I have never done before this time. The video captures the full rebinding process of a book I recently read - Arch of Triumph by Erich Maria Remarque. A great deal of the sewing was thorn, some pages were falling out, if not the whole signature. One of the headbands was missing and some pages had some minor damages. Most of the cleaning process has been cut out, but it was mainly dry cleaning.
Again, the weird sounds at the end are coming from the stove I use to heat the brass tools.

I hardly ever comment on CZcams but I have to give credit where credit is due this is cool as it gets! I just started rebinding Bibles/books /hymnals for friends and family and I recently put a ad on Facebook and I had one sent to me that I’m working on re-sewing because I’ve never done that so it’s a struggle to me.. I’d like to think I’m mechanically inclined haha Fromm running equipment and welding my whole life
And the army but let me tell ya this is a WHOLE other level of SKILL!!! 👍👍🤙 you got my vote haha thanks for the video I’ve searched google and YT up and down trying to find something like this and just happened to pop up on time feed this morning so 🙏 thank you! If anyone has any feedback or a link to where I can find something more in detail as far as patching signatures before sewing and really HOW TO SEPERATE THEM TO RE THREAD WHEN THEY ARE FRAGILE AND ALREADY RIPPING !!! But thanks either way to whomever and awesome video !

Great edit, nice soothing music. Beautiful work! I'm fascinated with the process. I've started dabbling with this hobby this year. First with slipcase/ clamshell designs and my last project was my first "binding" turning a paperback into a hardcover. I'm still not brave enough to take on the stitching/ actual binding part :D . It's leading me down so many fun avenues, even making my own marbled paper. I will look forward to more of your vids, keep up the good work.
I dived right into binding, the very first thing I made was a journal. I haven’t even tried box making, but would like to, postponed it because of all the measuring and the precision I will have to put into it, which are not my strong suit. Seems like you chose the harder part first (at least for me).

@@bookshelfiv2537 I followed tutorials from DAS bookbinding, usually I shun measurements and technical stuff but he made it seem doable. I'm sure you will enjoy it when you give it a go, it makes such a nice complement to a good book. Hi! The book cloth I got from eBay, the gold foil from Schmedt24, the finishing tools from Kevin Noakes. The other stuff I found at local shops or bought on sites like eBay, Amazon or Etsy

Beautiful work. What material did you use for the cover? It looks like a thick paper, but it also looks like fabric. It's hard to tell.
It is called book cloth. You can find different types - just fabric or this one that I think is called Buckram

how do you know how much space you need between spine and boards? отстав? Also what kind of material you are using for a spine? The one that you have folded 3 times and then glue to the spine? Excellent work!
Hi, for backed bindings I don't leave any space. The boards are placed exactly where the backing folded the page. The paper is just craft 110gsm paper, should be sold in any general art shop.

Very inspiring!!! What was the first solvent you used on the binding glue to get it off?
Thank you! It is wheat paste (bookbinding paste). There are lots of recipes online. I mix 50 grams of wheat starch with 200ml water and stir on low heat. It shouldn’t boil. It will slowly get to that consistency you see in the video. Put some on the spine and leave it for 10-20 minutes. Don’t put too much and don’t leave it for long or the pages will get wet.

This is such a great video! What was that paste that you put on the exposed spine? Was it suppose to dissolve the glue?
I used bookbinding (starch) paste on the spine to soften the glue. It doesn’t dissolve it, but allows you to pull the old lining and scrape what’s left on the spine. An alternative would be methyl cellulose which does the same to old glue. Both starch paste and methyl cellulose can be used as adhesive if left to dry.

It wouldn’t have been of much help either way, I have never tried and never read about potato starch. Wheat starch is working great for me. Did you try potato starch? I am interested to hear how it worked out

What kind of tape did you use to repair the pages? And what kind of glue? I have a vintage book that is missing it’s cover and I couldn’t bear to use the pages for other things since everything is intact aside from the cover! I have tried Coptic stitch binding to make new books but now I was to try more book binding like this! It looks so great and I love the format of this video! Thank you!❤
Hi! The paper I used for mending is Japanese paper, though I don’t remember its thickness. The glue is either bookbinding paste (starch paste) or combination of it + PVA. I prefer pure starch, it is much more forgiving of mistakes ;)

I got Propaganda by Edward Bernays, original edition 1928...
BUT...it has been a library book at the University of Oslo...
The cover and the last side are broken up...
What shall I do not to reduce the value of the book? Shall I get it restored or sell as is?
Just one ink stamp preciding the prior ownership of the book....

Hi, sorry for the late reply, please have the book examined somewhere. If the copy is of great value, I would advise you to contact a certified conservator. Usually big libraries provide such services. They are not cheap, but it will add to the value of the book.
