If there’s one thing I’ve learned about helis it’s that the US military’s assessment was right. If you’re in a plane do not engage the flying weapons platform that can pivot and side strafe. (Especially if it’s looking in your general direction)

I worked on A-4s in the Navy and loved them. They were tough, Easy to work on. Could turn on a dime and were one of the only aircraft that had more flight hours to maintenance hours.
Thought you might be interested to know a couple of things about the A4. I worked on A4E/F/M, TA4F/J & OA4M for many years in the Marine Corps. The B served aboard carriers, but not for very long. The it was too hard on the main landing gear strut attachment points. There was a Super M that was beefed up for carrier operations, but not many and only used for carrier quals. A4 roll rate was 720 degrees/second. Though it was designed as a ground pounder, it was also a very capable fighter. I served with a lot of Vietnam era A4 pilots. More than a few had fought dogfights with MiGs and won. One of my COs (LtCol Abajon) got jumped by 2 on the way in on a ground attack mission. He killed 1 and badly damaged the other with bombs and rockets on. He completed the ground attack run successfully and went to the aid of another sortie on his way home and killed another one. Skyhawk is the only American aircraft that ever came in under budget, over performed it's mission specs and served decades past it's projected life. It was my honor to launch the last A4 produced when it came to my squadron (VMA 311) on its farewell tour, and to launch the last A4 in my last squadron before retiring to send it on its last flight to the bone yard. I'd give my left nut to own an A4.

"warthunder - it's almost fun", and this is exactly the point. It's fun enough to keep playing, but not so much fun you can play for ages without getting frustrated and spending money
Unfortunately, it's still one of the better freemium games for what it is out there. I'm going to probably buy the A-26C-45 and then use the GE from the buy to buy the I-153P and probably something else in a nation I haven't touched, yet.
@@moblinmajorgeneral no shame in it once in a while. I buy something once a year in WT because i do not buy many other games, but any purchase helps keep em alfoat. Its fun to buy a ~tier 3 for a nation you havent played. You can effectively research tier 1 - 3. Best used in combo tank/aircraft in RB so you do not go to hanger after one death.

My dad was on the USS Kitty Hawk during the war and they did have skyhawks so I'm looking forwards to a KH skin.
I've been trying to find any Hornet skins. I had a family member who was CAG for Hornet by Midway, I'd love the SBD 5 for that reason. Been trying to get up to Navy jets as he was also an aide to Admiral Hoskins and helped get Banshees on carriers.

The A4 was the favourite of almost every pilot that ever flew it. There was a naval exercise in New Zealand in the 80s when the NZ A4s took out heaps of kills over the F14s by hugging the valley floors and just popping up for the kills.
These used to do low manoeuvres over my house in NZ back in the early 90s. Always fun to go out the back and watch them tearing it up.

Freddy well yes some places still allow people to go out and some don’t so it depends on where you live.
The A-4 was on basically every US carrier during its career, and on the postwar essex class they were even used as fighters and interceptors because everything else was too heavy to take off from them.
A-4s flew off a variety of carriers. The Forrestal class is one of them.
This is why we need the F-105 Thunderchief. Imagine going on wild weasel runs and having a viable counter against radar AA.

A4 Skyhawk is one of the greatest planes ever made and no one pays it much attention. It has served with distinction in numerous wars from Vietnam to Desert Storm. And yes, it can be shot full of holes and still complete its mission.

The “Scooter” is still in use by some air forces over sixty years since it’s introduction to service. Still a very capable ground attack aircraft.
A-4 Skyhawk was used in „ Top Gun” and „ Agressors” schools for Navy and USAF as equivalent of Mig-17 in terms of speed and manuverlibity

A-4 Skyhawk flew from decks of the Essex-class, Midway-class, Forrestal-class, Kitty Hawk-class, Enterprise-class, and I believe it operated, briefly, off Nimitz-class Carriers. So the only Carriers it didn't operate off... Were the small Carriers for Helicopters and VTOLs. But that's only the US Navy.
Brazil, Argentina, Australia, and due to inter-operational capabilities, likely also flew off the decks of British, Canadian, and French Carriers as well. Just don't quote me on the British-operated, Canadian, and French Carriers. But if there were nations that landed on Flight Decks at Sea, and they had the A-4, they likely did some Carrier landings.

My dad’s cousin who i build models with worked on the USS Intrepid and has some amazing stories. He also took some beautiful pictures of aircraft landing. When he was aboard her he was one of two men on board that knew how to fix the steam catapults. Due to the corona virus and him recovering from cancer I haven’t been able to see him, but if anyone wants to know one of his stories I’d be glad to tell what I can remember of them

My great-uncle/godfather flew A-4s in Vietnam, off of the USS Oriskany (CV-34), as CAG (commander air group) I believe. Very quick, very agile, but geez is the cockpit tiny. I once looked inside one and couldn't for the life of me imagine how anyone could squeeze themselves inside. The Navy Blue Angels flew the A-4 when I was a kid (before they switched to the F-18), and I can tell you their aerobatics were far more impressive back then.
Actually these mad lads were some of the last jets to still fly off the Essex class, we were lucky enough to get a Skyhawk that had flown off the Essex class carrier Bom Homme Richard in for our local air show, where I helped with ground ops, anyways she was with the navy heritage flight so we got to see her fly formation with an ea-18g growler which was awesome

I didn't know the Scooter was even in this game. It looks like they nailed the model pretty well visually, but for two things: First, on the ground, it will always sit nose-high. The nose strut is pressurized and softly sprung. It would be too long for its own wheel well, except that there's a rod that compresses and shortens it as it retracts. The mains are relatively short and, since they bear the majority of the weight, tend to be compressed when at rest. Second, the leading edge slats are not mechanically actuated; they deploy due to aerodynamic pressure at high angles of attack. When the aircraft is at rest on the ground, the slats roll forward on their curved bearing rails due to gravity. Always. Other than that, it looks well represented here. It was a simple, sturdy aircraft; easy to work on and fun to fly. The refueling probe was a bit of an issue: if fuel sprayed out at connect/disconnect, it could snuff the engine. We lost one that way; it wet the igniters and wouldn't restart. Smokin' hole.
The A-4s not only served on /Kitty Hawk/ class carriers (Constellation, Kitty Hawk etc.), but they also served on upgraded Essex class (Yorktown, Oriskany, Essex, etc) carrier that were converted to have an angled flight deck and redesignated as attack carriers (CVA)
17:54 dont forget Phly that once you landed you got additional rockets which boosts you to 600km/h in matter of 2 or 3 seconds.
EDIT: You can use them in dogfight aswell xD or to boost yourself towards one mach speed.

I ofc ran across some toxic morons that why I didnt spawned at attacker spawn. Well they were just toxic, I got banned for my foul language to them tho (but only chat HA) :D

and @PhlyDaily (just to aswer your question from the start) the Supercarriers at Vietnam were of the Forrestal-class, Kitty Hawk-class and the single ship Kennedy, and Enterprise classes. Nimitz was to late for Vietnam. Some of the Old WW2 Essex class and all Midway class Carriers served there too. The A 4 was so small and light that she could be used on all of them.
hey phly, fun fact. for the Chicago Airshows we sometimes get a A4 Skyhawk at the airport I work at and they require a external air start (a air compressor powered by a jet engine )

The American Skyhawk has operated off of the Enterprise, Nimitz, Forrestal, Kittyhawk, Kennedy, Essex and Midway class aircraft carriers. There’s no one class it was especially attached to, although it’s use on the Nimitz was short and generally involved use as trainers or for CQs when still in service with the Marines
Its the best when you're playing War Thunder and get a War Thunder ad in the middle of watching a Phly War Thunder video :D

My 9th grade science teacher flew the Skyhawk during Vietnam.
He said he didn't fully grasp hiw much danger he was in until a few years after the war when he had a kid.
According to him it felt like a game and he had the time of his life, he added that he never lost a wing man or friend and he feels guilty for his perspective of the war.
He's probably retired now, I graduated in 2013, he has to be in his mid 70s by now.

You're also looking at the A-4B, just to let you know. The A-4 started out life as a Nuclear Light Bomber. Yes... It was meant to carry Nukes and it was considered a Suicide Mission at that. Though, to improve chances, the US Navy and Marines did teach the 'Bomb Toss' Maneuver. But privately, the senior officers didn't believe the pilots would be coming back.
Im always astonished and impressed i can't even see the plane and or tank and phly sees them and knows the model type and there loadout and maneuvers accordingly. Its awesome to watch

In the US Navy the kitty Hawk was known as the "Shitty Kitty". The Forrestal was "The Forest Fire" and the Saratoga, upon which I served, was "The Suckin' '60 from Dixie"
My dad worked on the USS Kitty Hawk during his service in the U.S. Navy. He was an anti-drug operative and trained for anti-submarine combat on his helicopter.

The carrier classes that originally flew the sky hawk was the modified Essex class& the Ticondoroga class( not sure if I spelt that right.
My preferred loadout is the centerline FFARs with sidewinders on the wings. It’s lighter so you aren’t as much of a boat and the sidewinders are perfect for picking off unsuspecting g91s.
