    Brady, I've only been playing for a few years after being a baseball and football player in my youth. On pure athleticism I've probably gotten up to playing 4.5 tennis. My biggest weaknesses are techinical and nothing is weaker than my back hand volley. But your instruction is so specific, it really is special. thanks so much for putting so much effort into it.

    Great Job. There are very few Pros who are advanced volleyers anymore... You might have to look back to Rafter, Edberg, or Cash.

    being a one hander backhand eases the transition, and actually my backhand volleys are way superior to me for forehand volley. I cant scoop up balls with it like my bh does, and it feels a bit uncomfortable acceleration to put them away like my BH does in the same "slicing" diagonal motion. I dot step away from the ball to let my arm swing more freely, but the same motion with the FH is a grey area for me lol

    As someone new to tennis, I find it difficult to hold the racquet in the correct position for backhand volley (especially once left hand lets go of the racquet) and hit at the angle you show. And at contact, the racquet moves when the ball hits it. Maybe my wrist is not yet strong enough to do that since it is a new way of moving the wrist and feels unnatural. Like I have never used the wrist that way before. Is that common? Is it a matter of building up wrist strength and muscle memory?

    • @willzsportscards
      @willzsportscards Před 4 lety

      Not on volleys. I may break wrist a smidge on a very high backhand but that’s basically a backhand overhead at that point.

    Great content coach! But shouldn't the racquet face be square at contact?

    • @DailyTennisLesson
      @DailyTennisLesson  Před 7 lety +1

      It depends on the height of the ball. If the ball is at or below the level of the net you're going to have to open your strings a bit, while at eye level it will be almost square or for high balls you'll be square or even slightly closed. Thanks Samuel!

      @blessedbeliever8725 Před 3 lety

      Daily Tennis Lesson well, I doubt anyone sees this post, but here goes.....Brady, I analyzed your technique here and the balls you are hitting are all above the net, around your shoulder, and there is no way your racket head is perpendicular to the ground.....no way. Your racket face on every ball you hit in this video is always open (facing up), not perpendicular. I even paused the video right at contact to see your racket head, and it is not even close to being square (perpendicular). So, I guess you must just have great backspin to bring the ball down. This has been my struggle on the hard high balls hit at me while at the net (playing doubles). Not easy to step forward or even turn my shoulder much....but it seems I hit too many long because racket head is not square enough, being slightly open. I guess, being a short player, I don’t have that downward slice like you do....although yours appear to be only going downward slightly. Mostly outward.

      @@blessedbeliever8725 This is an important clarification that you bring up. I've often heard coaches say to hold the leading-bottom-edge of the racquet angle through the shot, but for an awful lot of shots--if you look at the replay frame by frame, their racquet face is actually almost straight up and down at the exact point of contact, then the angle increases as they swing through the shot, to accomplish the back-spin. If you ACTUALLY do exactly as instructed on any ball that isn't close to the ground, the ball will fly up. This was so confusing to me at first and I think leads a lot of beginning volleyers to frustration when they try to follow directions, but volley after volley flies up and out of the court. Also--I paused this video right at the point of contact at 5:02 and the racquet is very close to perpendicular. If the camera was one or two feet to the left of where it is, it would look square.

  • @jackbenimble99999
    @jackbenimble99999 Před 7 lety +3

    Great video! Question - I find that when I'm reaching for a backhand volley, the racket face ends up almost parallel to the ground, i.e. it's horizontal. In other words, the bottom edge is way too far out in front and its impossible the hit the ball squarely. What am I doing wrong?

    • @DailyTennisLesson
      @DailyTennisLesson  Před 7 lety +1

      That's actually pretty normal...if you're extremely extended on a backhand volley you're racket face will naturally open up, which is why a drop volley is actually a good play in that situation. However if you're not at absolute full extension, focus on not turning your palm down which is ultimately how the racket is opening up.

    I'm new. My coach said to learn slice first, then I can learn volley then serve. Is this true?

    • @DailyTennisLesson
      @DailyTennisLesson  Před rokem

      They all use the same grip, so this is not a bad idea. However, learning how to slice (and be competent at it) will take time...and you can't truly can't play tennis until you learn how to hit serves and volleys. As long as you're OK with that.

    what if you have a two handed backhand volley?

    • @DailyTennisLesson
      @DailyTennisLesson  Před 2 lety

      Same concepts, but you won't get as much extension and spin. I would encourage you to switch to a one-handed backhand, which will be frustrating at first but well worth it.
