  • In this video I demonstrate an easy way to make a large batch of handmade laundry soap (for laundry or general cleaning) using the cold process method, with coconut and rice bran oils as the main soap making oils. I also add eucalyptus essential oil to this soap which gives it a wonderful fresh fragrance (it is optional though).

Thanks Elly. My only other foray into making laundry powder was from your original recipe where I grated up a batch of "failed" shower soap. I really liked it and my container is now empty. As yet I have not made another batch because I read some negative reviews on home made laundry powder that said it was not good for washing clothes and which made me feel unsure. However I am now going to disregard that and make up your new recipe instead of using up leftovers! Love your video 🌼

Thanks Marion, you're welcome! I think it really does depend on the soap used. I've never had any issues with my machine using this kind of soap with the washing soda. I wouldn't use any soap with a high superfat. Lower is better.

Hello Elly. I have watched all of your videos, And been making soap for the last year. in fact, you are the reason why I decided to try cold and hot process soap. I've been doing m & p for the past 10 years. I decided to make this the other day and I got a little impatient what's pouring the LYE (I know better..lol). My lye was around 176 and my oils were around 100. Needless to say, I got soap on a stick. So I went ahead and put it in my Crock-Pot and it went to the Vaseline stage pretty quickly. So, I just cut it and figured since it is safe to touch and so on I would shred it now and let it dry out that way. I'll let you know how it turns out once I blend it with the washing soda. Thank you so much for the recipe I appreciate you!

I’ve made my first batches of soap using your basic recipe. They are great, I do everything with them: shower, wash the dishes, mop the floors… but I was thinking of making a “more cleansing” batch just for around the house. I wasn’t sure how much more coconut oil to use though… finding that “right balance” between a cleansing but skin drying soap and a “too” gentle but skin loving soap … so Perfect Timing Elly!! Hi Maureen, there are a few reasons, but mainly that it makes a better quality soap that sets harder and doesn't go as soggy when it's in use (you can read more about it here, www.ellyseveryday.com/soap-making-terms but experiments have shown that gelled soaps absorb less water when they are wet, so they last longer. Oohhh... I am trying this one too! I just love your recipes, the soaps come out just beautifully! I do have question, could I change the superfat percentage like you did with your coconut oil recipe to make this bar soap for everyday use also? I order some rice bran oil to try and do both, a cleansing bar and one for hand/body. Please let me know.

Hi Stephanie, I wouldn't use this for body wash etc, it would be quite drying. You could increase the superfat but that only works best with full coconut oil soap. Best to use a different recipe I think.

How do you know that it is completely saponified and that it’s safe to handle like that? I always thought that the 4-6 weeks curing of cold process soap making is for the saponification process to finish. It’s for this reason that I have opted for hot process soap making because i’m impatient like that.
Also I only work with coconut oil and olive oil because it’s readily available here in South Africa. And for the longest time I’ve been doing a 50:50 coconut oil to olive for a bathing soap. From this video I learnt that I’ve been creating laundry soap all this time and washing my body with it 😂
Jokes aside. If I am to stick to these two oils. What would be a better split to create a less stripping bar of soap for bathing?
Your videos are most helpful. Thank you very much!

Hi, the saponification is usually complete within a day or two for CP soaps, I always test them to make sure (like this czcams.com/video/3BP7089FqOI/video.html) You can increase the superfat to make your 50% coconut oil soap a bit less drying, or reduce it to 20 or 30%. Thank you for responding Elly. After watching your 100% coconut oil soap video earlier this week I actually made a batch and they came out beautifully 🙌🏽
I didn’t know that one can superfat to 25%. The most I have gone is 5%.
I actually made a batch of soap today (HP). 70% olive oil and 30% coconut oil.Water as percentage = 33%. The soap came out to soft to my liking; I know it’ll harden up over the next few weeks but I think I’ll try 60% olive oil next time.
I watched the video re ph of soap. The ones I have work like the strips used to test urine (couldn’t think of another way to describe them). So they work well when testing ph of liquid soap but not for bar soap. Will see where I can order strips like the ones you use.
      Take care 👋🏽🇿🇦

Thank you Hafsa, I think canola would be preferred to sunflower, but either would be ok if there are no other options. Sunflower can spoil a bit, maybe use less of it and recalculate the recipe?

Your voice is so soothing :) Hey, okay, I know this is a stupid question, and anyone else who might read this will begin laughing after I ask my question, but I don't care.... This is for a laundry application. After we cure the bars, do we shred them so they can easily dissolve in the washer machine? And how much do we use?

Morning Elly, so good to see your new recipe. You see what you have started in my home and I am so so grateful I found you on You tube, I’m having the happiest time making all sorts of soap. I’ve written is recipe out in my book for the next time I need to make some. I have just started using the recipe given by Terri of Dana’s Irish herb garden she uses Marseille soap bar as basis which Makes a big batch of liquid laundry detergent. I’ve also made a smaller batch of 100% coconut oil laundry soap blocks for grating using Amanda Aaron’s recipe. Now I will try your recipe and be able to see how they all work for me. I like the additive of Eucalyptus oil, you mentioned hand washing with it, how does it go with knitted jumpers, I’ve always used Martha Gardners eucalyptus washing liquid would your soap be similar or too harsh? Thanks again.

After I watched a couple of your soap making videos, I finally tried to make it yesterday by my own recipe which was excited. I was so confident to do that even if it was my first time because I studied it from your excellent videos. Thank you. One thing I am not clear is about water. Do you use rain water all the time? Water where I live is hard, 270 ppm. I used distilled water this time but I would like to use tap water. Any tip?
