  • Levi shares that not one stroke of a paddle can get us to a destination, however multiple strokes, by multiple people with a shared destination can change the world.
Levi Lawrence is the founder of Real Food Connections. He is a cook at heart, a passionate entrepreneur and a self-professed food geek! He believes that buying local can change the world and he walks the walk by being a distributor of over 175 food producers in the province.

The 10% shift..."“Buying locally produced food keeps money circulating in our community. If everyone spent 10% of their grocery and dining dollars on local foods, we would generate over 29 million dollars of economic value for our region!”

    I do like this idea.
I feel he should have given more information on the statistics side of things. I heard that supermarkets take away 1 job for every 3 people they employ. He should have elaborated on hard facts and figures like this.
He also should have given real world examples of how buying local has transformed local economies and communities.
All in all, it wasn't a great talk.

I used to do a disabilities program with the local high school where I got to give kids with disabilities the confidence to go out into the world and have their first jobs but because of one girl who feels like she’s been discriminated against and is trying to take us down, I can no longer do my program, which is a shame.

1st 30 seconds: EVERY dollar has an impact.
    2nd 30 seconds: I don't believe in absolutes.

They can't have a car factory in every town so some limits as to what can be done locally however you can buy food from farmers market grown by local growers and stores can buy locally grown produce.

It's a complicated issue, it's hard to say the balance hasn't been struck. What's happening is that local markets have adjusted. And people may not be saying that they're local Walmart is a beautiful place, but it's dishonest to say that people don't consider the availability products offered by big box stores when they move to an area.

The topic and concept are solid however, there has to be a way of measuring the impact of these types of decisions he is talking about. There would also have to be a lot of promises made from local banking, business, citizens and politicians if the goal is to change behavior in a community. He basically gave a 30,000 foot view while trying not to offend anyone and respond to objections that he has obviously faced at some point whether internal or external. Bottom line, this sort of thing is a project and needs a project manager and a whole lot of stick-to-of-ness. Yes, a made up phrase for staying power. In my experience, even the most devoted people can't stick to this mission and the day to day for very long at all. A ton of support but rarely any funding.
