How 'Weird: The Al Yankovic Story' Pulled Off the Cameo Filled Pool Scene | Making a Scene

  • "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" tells an exaggerated version of Weird Al's rise to fame in the 1980s. In one of its more memorable scenes, the character of Al performs "Another One Rides the Bus" at a pool party filled with offbeat, memorable personalities like Pee-Wee Herman, Andy Warhol and Wolfman Jack. Director Eric Appel, costume designer Wendy Benbrook and Al Yankovic himself, break down the making of the scene including calling in favors to cast all of those cameos, rushing to shoot it on a tight schedule, and why they weren't allowed to depict Freddie Mercury.

I think it worked out better to have John Deacon in the scene rather than Freddy Mercury, cause everyone knows who Freddy is. To have John Deacon introduce himself and everyone saying "huh? who?" and then making him need to awkwardly explain that he was the bassist in Queen was much funnier.

Plus Deacon wrote Another One Bites the Dust. he was also the "quiet, misunderstood weirdo" of the band, making it kinda fitting he was at the party too.

I think I would have much rather preferred the humor stick to a dewey cox walk hard level of exaggerated humor. I think the movie only hit it a few times, when he's around the table talking to his dad for a few scenes near the beginning and near the end, and him talking about the absurd factory scenes. I kept expecting the movie to get as good as that dinner scene, and be similar to Walk Hard. It just didn't quite get there for me. Don't regret seeing it, was fun, and at least for the first half before really going off the rails, was actually a little educational, think I saw it with my dad, who was telling me bits and pieces about the radio DJ and other stuff.

This guys longevity, ability to adapt to each decade as the music changed, his amazing ORIGINAL tunes as well as his massive influence on Pop Culture....it's a no-brainer! Glad to see the facial hair coming back Al!
I loved this full-tilt parody which I grew up with as a kid and informed so much of my humor and world-view. Keeping up with all the references and in-jokes of Monty Python and Mel Brooks made me curious about the world beyond videogames and comic books. Hopefully there's some kids today who watch this a little before they should and learn about all these interesting historical / cultural figures as well (not to mention all the cinematic send-offs and references).
We need more quality parody these days!

I grew up listening to Dr demento in the late 70s through the 80s.there were 3 shows I'd stay awake for on the weekend to listen to and record cassettes of. One was a Mexican radio station that played nothing but punk and hard core metal, the dr. Dr show and a local San diego station that did metal music not given air time during regular hours. Back then it was like metallic anthrax megadeth thrash bands mostly. I used to get 90min longmplay cassettes to record those shows then later on edit out the commercials and have a mix tape of music.
